oh, i love to translate, here ya go:
most of the models get discovered coincidentally. a scout talks to them on the street, in a cafe or while shopping. and so sometimes shooting careers start from one day to another in the international model world. with lonneke engel it was all different. because she herself got active. as a 12 year old the resolute dutch woman marched into a model agency in her hometown eindhoven. and not just because she strictly wanted to go to paris or mailand. but just to earn some pocket money. the alternative, she says, would have been delivering newspapers. "I never felt like doing that." and she never had to. lonneke immediately got internationally successful when the scout of a parisian agency showed her pictures to star photographer bruce weber. more than ten years later the now 24 year old is right in the middle of her career - and is the cover girl of this month's elle.
elle: your career already began in your childhood, and it went pretty fast...
indeed! i was about 14 and sat on a plane to new york to shoot my first advertisement campaign with bruce weber for abercrombie and fitch. i still remember how excited i was!
how did your life change since then?
i've travelled through almost the whole world and never stayed at one place for longer than a week. i had to finish school while i was on road. in three years i taught myself all the studies and passed the exams in all courses.
constantly on the road - have you got some travel tips for us?
1. drink much water, especially on the plane. 2. i take care that i take enough vitamins. 3. an "aspirin" (headache pill) is good against swollen legs on long distance flights.
where do you like to return back to most of all?
to the netherlands, of course, my home. especially to see my family and friends again. and my horses of course! i spend every free minute with them.
and where, apart from the netherlands, you also feel at home?
i especially like to stay at the "washington opera", a small, familiar parisian hotel.
what do you carry around with you most of the time?
the record "rumors" by fleetwood mac. my mother listened to it while she was pregnant with me and since then it's my favourite music. apart from that i always need a good book.
how would you describe your fashion style?
a wild mix! i love to wear oversized shirts over leggings, highheels to cargopants and cowboy boots to short dresses.
your favourite designers?
ralph lauren, dsquared2, chloé. i especially pay attention to comfortable materials.
how do you stay healthy and fit?
with lots of sushi!
where do you see yourself in ten years?
maybe still on the catwalk. but apart from that i'm dreaming of a real ranch with a large herd of horses and a happy cow.

She looks grittier without the entire Ralph Lauren look she used to have. Whatever happened to her while she was absent did good things for her look
