Lonneke Engel

Yesterday, I received the new Elle. I was like :o . Btw: This the first 'naked' Dutch Elle cover in history.

This edition can be a top seller, or completely not. I don't have any idea.

Lessons from Lonneke: My Night at the CFDA Awards!

We weren’t the only Chic Report team members at the CFDA ceremony last night. Our favorite model correspondent, Lonneke Engel, remembered all her favorite moments to share.
I flew in from Europe in the morning just to attend one of fashion’s most important nights–the CFDA Awards. My manager Peter arranged for me to borrow a beautiful black dress by Marchesa with all kinds of glitter and stones. I felt great! The bad weather of the past days was actually perfect for the CFDAs this year, as they were held inside one of the theaters at Fashion Week’s new location, Lincoln Center. In fact, mostly everyone wore black, with Blake Lively, in a bright pink sheath by Michael Kors offering one of the few splashes of color. The designer arrived with Heidi Klum. I was happy to see so many friends! The show was hosted by Tracey Ullman, who was very funny, but I thought the most hilarious bit of the evening was the video made for GQ creative director Jim Moore in which Jake Gyllenhaal had a cameo where he acts like he was very unhappy for not being on the cover of GQ. It was priceless! The Eleanor Lambert award was presented to Jim by Justin Timberlake. Of course, girls in the audience loved this!
I was very happy the first Popular Vote Award went to Ralph Lauren himself. I have been admiring him since I started working for him as a very young girl. The last award of the night went to the girls of Rodarte for Best Womenswear Designer of the Year. In their speech they remembered when they were still designing from their apartment, and had their friends act like casting agents. This was just a few years ago! I remember this myself, as I went to one of the castings for their show back then. They rose to the top within 3 years and now Kate and Laura definitely deserved the award! After the show there were drinks and food in the lobby. I am a health freak, so I was very happy to see that there was good food served and some really healthy dishes too! One of them being the crabmeat ceviche that was tasty! Of course the always-present-at-parties-mini-hamburgers were there too. The after party, hosted by Calvin Klein, was at the Highline, which is a very impressive! I think everyone who made the CFDAs happen this year, including Diane von Furstenberg, did an amazing job. But I want to also give a shout-out to all the models who stood outside wearing the nominees’ designs when everyone arrived.

Last night’s Pure Vida party, celebrated the beauty of sustainable practices: the event, hosted by Pure Vida founders, Lonneke Engel and Anne-Marie Van Dijk, sought to raise awareness about eco-friendliness within the fashion industry. The holiday party brought out modeling superstars, like special supporters, Doutzen Kroes and Valentina Z, but the real focus of the evening was the group’s commitment to positive change. Lonneke and Anne-Marie took time out to explain the concept behind Pure Vida, as well as their plans for the future.
MDC: How did this project get started?
Anna: It really started quite organically a few weeks ago. Pure Vida was created by three people: Lonneke, myself and Eyal Amir. We are all very interested in nutrition, healthy environment, ecology and while we always had our separate projects, we share the same passions. We said, ‘let’s have an organic Christmas party’ and we sat down and everything just started coming together.
Lonneke: We wanted to do a Christmas party because I have done an organic Christmas party for the past few years, this time we wanted to make it bigger and with a different concept. We wanted to lend our names to a good cause that we really support - starting Pure Vida made sense. I went to school to become a certified health counselor and Anne has done intensive research with whales and water projects, we really did our research before starting and we want to get people excited about doing something.
MDC: How can the fashion industry get involved in the cause?
Lonneke: Fashion is a powerful tool: everyone looks at media; magazines, television, movies, it all links back to fashion. By doing little events like this and promoting sustainable solutions we can prevent so much waste.
Anna: We are going to have a series of events planned and every event is going to focus on a different initiative. This one is about water - how to use reusable bottles, how to purify water and how it is good for your body and for the environment. The next one will be during fashion week, it is going to be focused more on models and nutrition, a subject that is very close to us. When the time is right we are going to have events and Christmas was perfect, people want to want to get inspired for the new year.
