Lonneke Engel

I see her huge pictures every day on the Vero Moda's windows in my home town. Those pictures are amazing, but I haven't found them anywhere on internet. Or have I just missed something?

I love Lonneke. I remember she was one of the very first models I noticed when I was around 10 years old and her Cacharel and Guess ads were everywhere. That must have been around 1996! It's so good to see she's still working. She's definitely one of the most beautiful models
I also like her on twitter, she seems so smart and down to earth.

She's in the current campaign for Swiss store Feldpausch and I see her posters everywhere, but the ads weren't published anywhere, other than this one:

Jump Into Spring with New Yorkers for Children and Lonneke Engel

On Thursday night, New Yorkers for Children celebrated their 7th annual Spring Dinner Dance and Lonneke Engel graciously agreed to serve as a guest blogger for Modelinia. Read on for a full account of her evening, including Twitter nicknames and her bid for a gorgeous bag!

The 7th annual New Yorkers for Children Gala yesterday at the Mandarin Oriental, I think, was one of the most fun events I have been to! With a last minute assignment from Modelinia to cover the event, and an invitation from Akris, the night’s main sponsor, I had to rush to get a dress and get ready!

I am so lucky that usually a designer sends me a dress. But you have to always rely on their great taste, and wait what kind of dress they are going to send. Today I was very happy: I got 3 really nice dresses from Akris, so it was hard to choose! I opted for the long flowy one, as it reminded me of a strapless greek goddess dress. It was super comfortable and I loved the colors! It helped that I had the perfect bag and shoes to go with it.

Then I had to pick the jewelry. I went in my little antique jewelry drawer, and picked out my favorite necklace with horse charm that I bought at a vintage store in the East Village last week for only 5 dollars! Well, I call that a bargain! I always say it is not about the designer, brand, or price, it is how you wear it. And it all fit perfectly together tonight. On my wrist, I had a bracelet I bought years ago at a store called Satya on Bleecker Street, NYC. They have nice, fine jewelry.

My shoes were vintage Diane von Furstenberg that I bought at my all time favorite vintage designer store INA in Nolita. They were still waiting in my closet for the perfect moment to be worn, and yesterday was that moment! And the blue bag has a similar story, although, I have had it for so long I don’t remember where I bought it. I pulled my hair back, and tied it in a bun, and tried to do natural makeup. I was ready to go.

I arrived at the event and it struck me that everybody looked so amazing! Almost nobody went for safe or black, and I saw the most amazing dresses walked by. Tiiu Kuik wore an amazing big Zac Posen dress (who was also her date) Olivia Palermo wore a white and gold asymmetric dress which I totally adored, Selita Ebanks wore a sexy see-through dress matching her skin color by Akris, with a very beautiful (and expensive) bracelet and Hilary Rhoda wore a La Perla dress which was so hot as it seemed you got a peek at her bum but did not really…I also loved Georgina Chapman’s white one shoulder short dress. I saw a lot of colored dresses, (grey stood out) and a lot of long dresses. Everybody worked it; It was fashion heaven! Even the honoree Chantal Schloss, wore a great white and grey tight cocktail dress. I will tell you more about her later.

I arrived with no date, so I had to mingle, and see and learn what this night is about.
Tonight there would be cocktails, dinner, dance and a silent auction. I walked by the auction table and they managed to get great items. Really nice designer bags, a two night stay at The Standard plus dinner, a beautiful Bulgari watch, cashmere blankets, there were three tables full of stuff. I told myself to go back and see what the bids were a bit later. I got a drink (water) and went inside the big room. It seemed I did not know that many people at first look, so I started to chat with this beautiful lady to my left, I thought I recognized. So after I chatted for I while, I asked:” Have we met before? You look so familiar!” She was very sweet and wasn’t sure if we did. Later I found out she was Malin Akerman, who is a famous actress, and yes she is familiar to me because I just watched the Proposal with her in it! I felt stupid but now I think of it, it is pretty funny!

Dinner started and I sat next to Joe Zee, who took over Elle as Creative Director and made it the nice magazine it is today, Selita, Vanessa from WWD, and other friendly people. The starter was mozzarella and tomato, and main course I got the vegetarian risotto, which was really nice. I tried to not eat the dessert but I had one bite. It was chocolate after all! Selita, Joe. and I were called the “Twitter addicts” as we kept Twittering all night - our pictures, and our thoughts about the party, haha!

Nicholas Scoppetta, a retired fire commissioner and the brains behind NYFC, gave a speech about the charity. The New Yorkers for Children (NYFC) organization gives foster kids the tools to be successful in school. Honoree Chantal Schloss then spoke about her experience how she was helped so much by the organization, even by something as simple as getting a computer. Sometimes we take things for granted. It got everybody quiet and listening. It is always nice to hear a success story!

A little bit later when literally the whole room was dancing to Sky Nellor DJing, I went back to the auction table. The auction was closing at 11pm and it was approaching that time… My eye caught this grey travel bag by Longchamp… I told my boyfriend the day before I wanted a grey travel bag! I looked at the bid, and thought I would want it for a bit more. After all, all the money you spend this night goes to help foster children! The charity raised $400,000 already, and the auction will add to that. As I write this I am anxiously awaiting a phone call if I “won” the bid… Hopefully I am lucky… it would be the cherry on the pie of this fun event. Hopefully I am invited again next year!
