Influenced creatively by living in Lisbon, Portugal over the past several years, Madame X is a collection of 15 new songs that celebrate Madonna’s career-long affair with Latin music and culture as well as other global influences. Singing in Portuguese, Spanish and English, highlights on the album include “Medellín,” which was co-produced by Mirwais and captures the spirit of Maluma’s hometown, the anthemic song “I Rise,” the Jamaican dancehall vibes of “Future” featuring Quavo, and co-produced by Diplo, as well as the sonically innovative Mirwais produced “Dark Ballet.” Recorded over 18 months in Portugal, London, New York and Los Angeles, Madonna collaborated on Madame X with longtime producer Mirwais, as well as with producers Mike Dean and Diplo, among others.

“Lisbon is where my record was born,” Madonna says. “I found my tribe there and a magical world of incredible musicians that reinforced my belief that music across the world is truly all connected and is the soul of the universe.”

The holograms are so messy and unnecessary, and the one in trench coat is such a kii, but overall the performance is cute.

I actually quite like “Future.”

I mean...the lyrics are pretty poor and I could do without the Quavo...

But the song itself is cute. I love the brassy hook and the reggae beat. In fact, in reminds me of the last album’s track “Unapologetic B*tch.” That song was my favorite off of “Rebel Heart” because it was the freshest sound for Madonna. At the time I remember thinking it would have been much more interesting for her to have created a solid and thematic album exploring reggae, instead.

This new track affirms that instinct again. It’s a fun song. These sort of patchwork albums she’s doing now don’t make any sense. I’d really be more interested if she’d take time to explore a genre...reggae, in this instance.

I guess that’s what happens when you lose your sense of being a creative leader and instead worry about pleasing everyone by doing everything.

I think everything she released so far is pretty solid for the whole genre. Crave and Future are my favourites.

Oh dear… So that tacky Michael Jackson-level of design monstrosity is actually by... Gaultier??? :sob:

I’ll always appreciate that at 60, she hasn’t relegated herself to a Vegas residency of parodying her past glories like it’s Groundhog Day, accompanied by “Madonna Sings the Classic Standards” and “Madonna Does Christmas” nightmares. Like she said once, “I’d rather *********** than sing silly pop songs like Mariah”.

However, if I were 17-20yo, and only familiar with her public performances in the last decade and ignorant of her superior body of work prior, I would be quite annoyed with her antics. It’s not ageism, just that with age, we all (hopefully) gain and earn a certain refinement and restrain to our self-presentation rather than stoop to a more juvenile level.

I wished she took her own advice and made an effort to channel the mature elegance of Martha Graham/Pearl Bailey/Alvin Ailey, rather than try to keep up with all the kidz she’s so desperately seeking to be down with. It’s all coming off resembling the clueless “Cool Mom" who thinks she’s cool cuz the kidz let her hang with them— but in reality, they’re just using her for her rides and money :sigh: ...There’s a reason rappers who are in their 50s aren’t coming out dripping like they’re Swae Lee these days. I wish she would see that because the one track she abandoned for her last album, “Queen”, is one of the most powerful soundscape and social statement she’s ever made in the last decade that’s still fresh to this day :double sigh:

To show her some love, my top 25 tracks of hers— and they span from the first to the latest album…

1. Physical Attraction
2. Burning Up
3. Into The Groove
4. Live To Tell
5. I Want You
6. Keep It Together
7. Rescue Me
8. Paradise
9. Deeper And Deeper
10. Waiting
11. Secret Garden
12. Secret
13. Sanctuary
14. Justify My Love
15. Nothing Really Matters
16. To Have And Not To Hold
17. Music
18. Get Together

20. What It Feels Like For A Girl
21. Time Stood Still
22. Devil Pray
