Marc Jacobs S/S 08 NYC

Cathy Horyn suggests a clash of sexuality, the end of 'victoria beckhamism' and the uncomfortable march toward something new...certainly puts the numbered jersey dresses into some kind of context.

interesting though

most of it isnt wearable but its very interesting to look at. He kept the slim shapes from fall though ,the skirts maintained that long 30s style but thats it, rest of it is interesting but weird. This is nothing compared to his fall 07 collection whose looks are EVERYWHERE.
its like he mixed his fall 07 and fall 06 sort of lol, i mean all the deconstruction and all. I hate deconstruction , in the effort to be different you end up looking sloppy and sort of trashy. These clothes have that hooker vibe going through them, that bothers me a bit . My fav is the maroon sequin dress only because its similar to his fall looks which i love.

^^^ but thats what makes Marc Jacobs so exciting - you never know what to expect!! ;)

I think I'm tired of getting excited (if that's possible?!) just for the sake of it.

When the clothes are great, it's fantastic to see something new, of course; but when the clothes are poor, it's a big let down.

In fact, I'm tired of shallow, meaningless, fast fashion, in general.

I now want to see a considered body of work, thoughtfully evolved over several seasons, that really showcases the talent of the designer.

Love the black shimmery trousers worn by Freja, and is that heart patch an hommage to his friend Lil Kim?

I agree with most people who have said that it had a big range of references, like Chanel, Margiela, etc. Here's another one: the trompe l'oeil sheer mini dresses compared to Rudi Gernreich's work... the bras and panties motif, also done by Peggy Moffit for CdG.

I also like how some of the dresses can only be worn as tops since they are cut open so high.

I was one of the people to complain that his latest Fall/Winter collection looked dated and would make people feel old... and while most looks this season have a very mature, 50's ladylike feel, there were certain details added for a little child-like touch: the headgear, the deconstruction, the soft pastels.

The end of victoria beckhamism, if only...

i dont think deconstruction is the problem...
i think deconstruction done badly is the problem...

I love that it seems as if Marc has given so much thought into everything. The details like the accessories, the cutting, the materials and the embroideries. I also like MJ's sense of humor and it reflects that well in his clothing. ^_^

I feel kinda alone on this but it makes me feel uneasy..the whole collection. I can't explain it! I dislike most of the pieces but I feel like there's a reason behind them and I don't understand it. To me it just looks cheap and flimsy with little or no thought process behind everything...and I'm sure that's not the case so...argh

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX (as the mise-en-scène suggests).

This is REconstruction not deconstruction. Do you see anything unfinished?

Things are not as they seem as is shown throughout the collection. (masks, witness the GENIUS construction of the faux sleeves, the inventive miniature mules.)

The surrealistic touches are fantastic and reference Schiaparelli NOT chanel, Dries etc that some of you critics love to dream up.

Rehab chic? Perhaps. The bedlam hair, the deliriously off colors, the %!&?$! up vintage classics, numbered dresses and kitsch bourgeois accessories all add up to a wonderfully weird world.
Amy Winehouse would look beautiful in this stuff!

In a sea of mediocrity that has been NY this season, this is simply untouchable...

V&R are pretty genius as it seems their work on catwalks different ways inspired Marc Jacobs... like artists thinking about the way to curate an exhibit' and their works.... scenari etc.
anyway the show looks good... i think about a destroyed secretary, destroyed geeks, destroyed housewives.... destroyed ppl....
interesting....

some of it really does look cheap... like separates for working moms gone wrong. Hate the heavy-handed satin sashes. Didn't like last season, and this season isn't much to shout about either. There are some fun pieces mixed into the general batshit craziness of it all, but I'm indifferent to the rest.

looks a like drunk schizophrenic secretary who is playing with her kids toys and masks , circa 1951, he sure jumps decades last season it was the 20s/30s , will he go to the victorian era or jump to 70s disco who knows? I dont like this though from a wearibilty point of view , it wont be a big influence compared to the fall collection . From an artistic point of view , this show is fantastic. The clothes speak of a deranged womens' life , those capes make me think she is hiding a liquor bottle in there lol

what you write is very interesting and your point of view seems well informed....
but keep it calm.... :innocent:
we are not idiots....
it's on the borderline of snobism...

These glasses are 10 kinds of cute. As for the rest of the show...I'll have to get back to you. I liked it. After it sunk in and milled around my head for awhile.

Anyways this is kinda hard to digest, it looks slightly off, but that isn't a bad thing. Great show atleast..
