Matthieu Blazy - Designer, Creative Director of Chanel

I reviewed his collections over the past years and its largely Phoebe Philo 2.0 but not as appealing , Blazy will really have to reference Karl's work because no way the sh!t at BV will appeal to Chanel chicks. In that regard I hate say it but Hedi nailed it with his last collection for Celine but his strong ego and Diva drama would be very problematic considering Nair is brutal in terms of control. Nair and corporate wanted a yes mam! designer who would do their bidding. I just don't think he has the chops for couture at all and that's going to be an issue down the road. Also Blazy's work does not have that French Gamine vibe at all, he really has to study the archives otherwise he will be done in year , two tops.

I enjoy Karl and his work, but jesus christ... even HE wouldn't want people to focus on his work so much like this after death. I don't want to say let it go, but LET IT GO! We can't keep living in the past and be stuck in a state of permanent nostalgia.

Your points here are moot, Chanel has very strong house codes , Karl honored those codes and his enormous body of work is what is sustaining Chanel till now.

No, I understand that very well. At some point you do have to let the past be in the past, Karl knew that too and "honored" it as well. Karl didn't design Chanel the way Coco left it when she died in 1971 and Blazy shouldn't be designing Chanel the way Karl left it in 2019 or the way Virginie designed it... at all. I don't give one sh*t about Blazy as a designer, to be honest, but the fact that so many people are gnashing their teeth and expecting the worst is utterly bizarre. I'm certainly not crying for a designer who gets criticism, but how do we realistically know what he's going to produce. Was Karl's work for Chanel the same as his work prior to Chanel? No. Not saying that Blazy is on Karl's level (who is?), but what is he supposed to do? Become a fashion savant designer in the next 6 months? Why can't we have more realistic expectations. And then we have people who compare him to Virginie... ok why? Virginie should never have even been HIRED as the creative director. Clearly that was never her ambition! Being a studio director is a skill in and of itself. Blazy is not Virginie and has a totally different perspective. Why do we have to be weighed down by Karl's reinterpretation of Chanel? This is one of the reasons why the fashion industry is beyond pathetic and doomed in 2024. Nostalgia, nostalgia, nostalgia, nostalgia.

It is not doomed because of nostalgia lol, its doomed because of a lack of talented designers coupled with mega-corporations that stifle talent which results in the same kind of clothes being produced season after season without development.

^ but what Pieter and Blazy do are far from the atrocities of Mr Simons…

I don’t see any posterity coming from him. More like they distant themselves. They don’t even hire neither Rizzo or Vanderperre once. 😂
