It’s something that really started with Law Roach and Zendaya and nowadays, stylists wants to be in the conversation. But even at Vuitton, I think only Law Roach is on the payroll and gets to style the campaigns. As all the others were either handpicked by NG or are just friends of the house, the stylist may get perks but not necessarily be part of the deals.
But yes, overall the ambassador thing is exhausting.
The stylists often don’t get paid directly by the brands; instead, the actors’ or celebrities’ agents are the ones actively pushing for a high-end fashion image in hopes of securing an exclusive brand deal. The stylist’s role is simply to execute that vision — to create an illusory image.
There was an interesting podcast on this topic some time ago — I don’t remember exactly which one, but it was probably BOF.
If we look at Ayo specifically, she is styled by Danielle Goldberg, whose other clients include:
Greta Lee (now a Dior ambassador)
Zoë Kravitz (a Saint Laurent ambassador)
Margaret Qualley (a Chanel ambassador)
Everything is carefully planned and curated to serve a larger goal: securing a paid ambassador role. Until that happens, they’re often encouraged to dress in more avant-garde, unexpected, or fashion-forward ways. It’s all quite strategic.
Of course, there are exceptions — for example, Tilda Swinton, who seems to have a more natural sense of style, a genuine interest and knowledge of fashion, and authentic personal connections with designers and fashion houses.
