I agree with congacon... whenever I look into a VS catalogue, and I see Karlie in the PINK section, I just feel she doesn't belong there aesthetically speaking.... on the other hand, Joan fits better both faces of the industry: commercial and HF.

i don't understand people who say that Karlie has unconventional looks, or that she's not a commercial beauty. i think that her looks are really rather, dare i say, average. lol. i feel like i've seen tons of regular girls who look similar to her in the face. she resembles Taylor Swift a lot - to me. what makes Karlie stand out is her inner fire. her ambition. her personality explodes from within in photographs. AND she's incredibly versatile. i think she's got vast amounts of charisma and presence, both on the runways and in photographs. those are the qualities that make her stand out, not simply her features themselves. that's my opinion, anyways.

regardless -- it seems to me that both Freja and Anja and Natasha and Sasha have all already peaked. they've had a great ride near the top for a few years now. and they've all been very successful. they'll continue to be thought of with the same fondness and respect that people like Shalom or Carmen or Angela are. great models that, despite their tremendous success, were never quite supermodels in the real BIG sense.

i do think that the time is ripe for supermodels to make a re-emergence into the pop culture landscape. people are obsessed with these celebrities (like the Kardashians, for example) who really do nothing but party and be pretty. lol. at least they could see their favourite models work. and if you had some girls at the TOP who really loved being FAMOUS. and who wanted attention and celebrity status and a bit of chaos and hedonism. then you'd get some divas. and then you'd get some stars. and if these girls were much loved by the fashion world and also had a mass-platform to be accessible to the general public (ie, VS, celebrity boyfriend, hosting gigs, tv show guest spots, etc) then it could definitely happen.

AND - i think that Karlie and Joan and Candice are the ones that come to my mind to fulfill this role. if I had major influence in the fashion world - i'd start getting these girls in editorials together. i'd start getting them in campaigns together. i'd get them out to hollywood parties and get them photographed with more famous celebrities. i'd do what i could to get them a VS contract - one that was loose enough that they could still work all the time in high fashion.

^ i agree, it's not Karlie's face what's take her where she is now, i'd say is her runway walk and her personality..
about the VS contracts, i see both her and Joan getting it but they definitely want Karlie first.. didn't she have 3 outfits and closed the show? that's pretty impressive considering that it was her debut!

It's not really relevant if WE think someone fit and because of what we think a model is getting a contract. I get that you agree with that Karlie doesn't fit the collection, but it got nothing to do with her chances of a possible contract. Not to be rude, but my English isn't that good, so I just go the easy way to say it.
If you know the actions that VS take for Karlie (they were asking her a while for vs, she didn't even go to the castings, got 2 or 3 outfits with big wings and closed the pink segment and so the show.

I do agree with Congacon about a coloured model, if they need one Joan is def. the number 1 for that.

I disagree about the bony part. What to think about Chanel? And Doutzen also doesn't have the perfect body. Karlie has great amazone legs and a great personallity. And I don't think that vs is looking for the perfect body (considering if you look at the angels), but a body type that speaks to woman and VS wants a personallity. A lot of woman are bony and don't have big hips or a full *** or have the perfect body. We are all different (bodywise and personal). Karlies body type speaks to them to buy lingerie (and that's what they want) and Karlie got a lot of positive energy.
As a woman, i only can say that (also about Chanel) it's really smart to do this cause it's way more realistic. And if Karlie really was to bony she wouldn't walk for VS to begin with. I don't find Erin, Lindsay, Chanel, Lily A beautiful but hey they are still there haha and I still want VS.

Considering this, Karlie got much bigger chances if someone even gonna get a contract. And with some good campaigns she will defo be #1, but not rule Joan out, It's a open race!
Ps. what's up with Freja? First I saw her everywhere and now? Taking a little break or something?

Karlie has been modeling for VS for a few months, so, between Karlie and Joan, Karlie definitely has the stronger relationship of the two. I don't know why people consider PINK to be "second class" within VS because it is far from that. For the record Joan has done printwork for VS too, but Karlie has done more and also higher profile work, for example she has been on the front-page banner for their website.

I think that she is way above average but yeah we are looking at Karlie with the same eyeballs, I am not getting how Karlie's look is unconventional. To me she is a conventionally pretty girl with interesting eyebrows, what really sets her apart is her amazing personality and presence, and that she is a skilled model in print and on the runway, although for many her walk is an acquired taste. In fact I always thought that it was Karlie's success that signaled the end to the funny-looking model / quirky model and East European craze and paved the way for more conventionally pretty models like Frida, Jac, Constance, Arizona and Joan. Although I would not be surprised if Karlie was if Eastern European ancestry but she probably has other stuff mixed in to soften her look.

But see this frustrates me about the MDC list because I think that keeping a model at the top for a certain length of time, say two years may shut out a model who is worthy of the top spot, I don't think that it should be too short either, but a year is enough and it should only be longer if that model is truly the dominant model in the industry at that time. I think that Freja deserved to be number one (not that I have completely ruled her out) as did Natalia and maybe even Natasha but they had the misfortune of reaching their peaks too early in the cycle of whomever was in the top spot at that time.

I don't think its fair that Anna Jagodzinska is still in the top 10 but not Sigrid. I like Anna more than Sigrid, but she isn't on anyone's radar anymore. I know thats probably by choice, considering she doesn't do runway anymore. Sigrid hustles hard. She doesn't do well editorially, but she is a big campaign force. IDK whats taking so long for her top 10 spot. When Karmen moved up, Sigrid should have moved up, too.

noticed MDC "updated" their rankings today but nothing major. Sui He was moved to 23 which i guess is good. Still it remains that the curiosity of the top 5 is killing me:unsure:

i dont get it. why natasha is still at number 2. sasha's body of work over the past 2 years are way far more superior than natasha's but she got move down to number 5. and i bet jamie is still in the ranking. i wonder if there is big COSMETIC CONTRACT on the way for her that we have yet to find out.

^ you're right. Jamie is still ranked...And personally, I don't see sasha's work over the past 2 years far more superior than natasha, who got 7 (? sorry if I remember incorrectly) Vogue covers last year including 2 Vogue Paris, and has a Vogue Russia cover and a dedicated Vogue Espana whole issue within the last three month. Sasha's been doing terrific recently, but had slowed down a bit earlier this year.

Honestly, I don't think it means that much in terms of being ranked 2nd, 3rd or 5th, for a well-established model, like Sasha or Natasha, who has been on the list for so many years. The only thing matters, I guess, is whether be able to reach the number one spot or not.

Updated 14 11 2011

Moved Up:
32-29 Kristina Salinovic
30-23 Sui He
23-20 Aymeline Valade

Moved Down:
29-33 Juliane Grüner

^I think there is a very clear distinction between the top 5 & the top 10. Everyone in the top 10 has major bodies of work in their careers, but the top 5 are reaching into potential icon territory. They get repeat bookings, have big contracts & are the stars of shows & editorials, so I think you're right about Sasha & Natasha. Both of them are pretty much on the same level, & while they won't become #1, they will definitely become icons.

^^ Yeah but getting Vogue eds and covers are like marketing and a campaign is like making the sale, Natasha (who I think is amazing) has been doing a lot of "marketing" with only a few sales to show for it. If Sasha can book the Armani campaign, which is major, along with her other campaigns while only doing "selective" marketing then more power to her.

campaigns are way more prestige than covers. think about it there are not too many campaigns that models can get compared to magazine covers(12 months...). and best of all, campaigns do actually pay lots of money unlike covers and eds.

Men's list update

i can't believe this!:angry::censored::furious:

Jacob Coupe and Marlon Teixeira were removed
Charlie Timms debuted at 49
Sebastian Sauve - from 30 to 35
Kim Dall Armi - from 33 to 36
Lenz von Johnston - from 34 to 30
Jamie Wise - from 35 to 34
Benjamin Eidem - from 35 to 33
Jaco van den Hoven - from 36 to 38
Adrian Bosch - from 38 to 41
Malthe Lund Madsen - from 41 to 43
Paul Boche - from 48 to 47
Charlie France - from 49 to 50
Diego Miguel - from 50 to 48

i really don't get why these guys are out! i know their work isn't top 10 worthy but compared to the rest of the list is pretty similar,
they're regular in eds (at least for a male model) and Marlon has got more than a few covers recently, he's the spokesmodel of a Diesel fragance and is in the holiday ads of Armani Exchage while Jacob is in the latest Zara lookbook..
so please someone explain it to me!!!

the other changes are so random and pointless, they moved like 2 or 3 places :ermm:

absolutely ridiculous. Marlon is one of THE most famous and lusted after male models working today. he might not be in blue chip campaigns all the time, but surely they gotta measure the men slightly differently. he is definitely earning more money and has more exposure than 85% of the rest of the guys on that list. it's absurd that he has been removed.

^
I'm big fan of Marlon but this what i going to say is completely objective,Marlon should be in top 20.He did more ad campaigns then most of those models from top 50 and wont even going to talk about covers. He was on so many covers this year.
I really don't get the way how MDC ranks the male models.

OK, Melissa Tammerjin seriously needs to be in the top 50 now. She got Jaeger & Gucci Fiat this season. Thats better than alot of girls still on the list.

^Julia Nobis is more deserving than Melissa imo....anyways both of them need a position on the list

so ... can someone confirm this for me, because i just wanna make sure i've got it correct:

KK has Rag&Bone, Donna Karan, Dior and Tommy Hilfiger?
