Men's Denim

ps here's a link to just 3 styles by prps. i just ordered a pair that might be the selvage dark wash. unclear what they mean by "wrinkled" style - will that wash out?
i will try to revisit apc, after reviewing this whole thread, the rescue might suit my needs, but from past inspections, i recall the pocket placement looked too high for my taste. the bottom of the back pocket has to fall... (pardon my cheekiness) below the cheek (now pardon the earlier pun. i guess i could have used "bun"). but i don't want a low rise.

if you google prps, there are a few sites that give some info about the company. i would really appreciate any opinions or comments or recommendations. thanks.

They have (or had) a one-wash jean with purple selvage that I think is beautiful. I didn't like the way they fit on me, or I would definitely have bought them because the denim and construction quality, finishing, details, etc. were top-notch.

Most of their washed jeans are "overdone" IMO.

oh gorgeous, this thread is alive. thanks for being there tangerine.
i am really crazed about quality denim and construction. mine will arrive by next week, so we'll see, but i have read up on the details. it's a matter of finding the right size. what were your specific complaints with the fit?

:D I love denim!

The legs were too baggy for me, it isn't my style.

There is some info here, don't know if you've seen this site yet.

PRPS I love the purple selvedge dark denim...the wrinkled is very nice too. It's a baggier fit but I think it's cool if that's your style. The washed styles are overdone I agree w/ tangerine.

I adore denim! delicious. the most perfect perfection.

i have seen that site, tangerine. thank you.
interesting about the baggy legs. i love a slight bootcut pesonally, in a perfect world, but i'm hoping since i wear a small enough size, the legs, proportionately, won't be too bad... though now i have cause to wonder.

FtB, i'm definitely not interested in the washed styles - i take a lot of pride in breaking in my own pants, thank you very much ;) i don't need anyone doing my dirty work.

bootcut works on women but personally I really like seeing a girl in baggy jeans who can pull them off, it's a very nice and unexpected touch I think, good alternative to usual bootcut.

well thank you so much for clearing away some of my doubt. the jeans are due in tomorrow, but i was pretty relieved to get the stamp of approval from some connoisseurs.
even when i say bootcut, i still mean men's jeans of course. you had me feeling like, "baggy? baggy?! :o
i feel the best when i'm in men's jeans, with a very feminine but quirky top, something by isabel marant or vivienne westwood, etc. i love the contrast. and women's jeans stink, for the most part. denim is just a masculine territory (that's its origin, part of the appeal. it's about more than fabric), and they really do it right for you guys.
now i have a pair of jeans by yohji yamamoto that blew me away quality-wise. they are from his y's for men line, and the thickness of the denim, and the silk-lined pockets (so there is zero bulk to them) are divine, but it has a wash with whiskering and such that i do not like much. does he produce raw with each season as well? i got these on sale, but would be tempted to pay a little more for the perfect jeans.

Nope, Yohji doesn't produce denim every season...those are definitely a keeper. A girl wearing Y's for Men jeans...that sounds like heaven, I wanna see pics :woot:

:o well that's unbelievable. what a shame. they are a perfect fit - is it possible that he does y's for men... for women? actually, the label says y's at work. and the buttons say y's for men. they're crazy long. biggest cuff i've ever had in my life. they ruined me for jeans though. so now i'm beginning my serious collection - nothing but the best. the aging that was done on them is by spotted horse, but i would prefer none.

Y's (the regular name for the diffusion collection for women) does denim as well...they're usually a pretty baggy fit too, in Yohji's signature cut but to determine whether they're mens or womens i'll have to see pics.

Yohji Yamamoto did a raw denim jean-trouser for S/S 06 that is amazing...man I'll propose to the girl I see wearing those in the street. They're really expensive though, like 465 euro if I remember correctly, they're on Luisa Via Roma.

Spotted Horse does awesome distressing on jeans, i agree. They also do their own jeans alongside work for 45 RPM.

To stay on topic though, what exactly constitutes a "soaking"? Is it self explanatory?

they came today. i think i will keep them, but i may order another pair one size smaller for a different look. these hang on my hips. really nice details. the pic doesn't show the last button on the fly (i don't need to undo it to take them off), but it's purple. they are definitely not made of the same steel that apc uses to make theirs. now how long can i last without washing them? some posters said .. 6 months?
(FtB, i did not need to know about luisa via roma. i was doing just fine without knowing about that site. curse you. the trousers are gorgeous.)

isn't y's at work only retailed in japan? i know he has numerous lines that aren't exported to the u.s. (or even outside of japan, i believe), and i think that's one of them.

HiHeels, those are great!

People talk about wearing jeans every day for 6 months but your mileage/perspiration/tolerance may vary.

I wouldn't wash them any more than necessary, but a cold wash when needed will keep indigo loss to a minimum while preventing you from feeling disgusting.

wow, i'm going to have to be careful with mine if this is true. does anyone know? here are pics of the label - you can faintly see the "Y's at work" printed on the silk, and another close-up of the front, with the silk lining of the pockets peaking out. the buttons say "y's for men jeans"

is the wait before the first wash the most important? or is that myth?
and another poster talked of using baking powder and freezing the pants. are you guys just pulling my leg?

i'm getting some feedback from friends that the prps are a bit... poochy in front on me. they are big but they stay up. do you think they will relax some and change to fit me, or is extra fabric just extra fabric? would they shrink much in the dryer do you think (once i eventually wash them)?

I agree that the wait before the first wash is the most important. You are trying to get maximum contrast between the wear marks (abrasion areas) and the rest of the indigo, and washing removes indigo everywhere.

I have also heard of the baking soda (not powder) and freezing trick but I've never tried it. I believe it works though, it makes sense.

When I tried on the one-wash jeans, the waist was snug, but I felt it was the right size because denim (almost) always stretches out a bit. The guy at the store told me that they do relax after a while and fall more naturally.

They have already been washed and dried once, so I don't think you are going to see much shrinkage. They will shrink some each time you wash them but will stretch back out after a little while wearing them.

Did you buy your "normal" waist size? I felt that they run true to size.

okay, then i will really try to hang in there and wait as long as possible for that first wash.
i will need more info on the baking soda (a million thanks for the soda/powder clarification - i am a lousy cook) freezer trick. how much of the soda, where, how long in the freezer (why the freezer?), do i let it thaw before wearing them again (brrrr)?

i bought big. i agree that they do run true to size. i will order one size smaller for a different look, but i will keep this pair. they are very great quality and a lot less than the yohji pair, with similar appeal - i like the uber-plain back pockets, the button-fly.

 Do you like the thrill and chill of cold legs?

I did a little (re)search on www.mynudies.com, where I first heard of this trick, and found these instructions from sbbbjm, who by the way is also a tFS member. The bolded words are the ones I used in the search.

sbbbjm said:
1. lay my jeans out insideout and i take a good ole box of arm & hammer baking soda and sprinkly it LIBERALLY all over the jeans

2. go back and spread the baking soda out evenly with your fingers.

3. fold one leg on top of the other

4. lay out some baking soda on that clean side that your looking at

5. roll them up from the waist down

6. place in a plastic bag and leave in the freezer overnight

7. take em out in the morning and shake em out. most of the powder should fall out. now if it doesn't, this is where you take you handy dandy family vaccuum cleaner and you do a once over with the jeans. i don't even bother using the hose, i just hold the jeans down with my feet and use the regular floor suction.

8. still smell? undo the inside outness and do the baking soda trick on the outside.

baking soda absorbs odors, which is why we put boxes of it in the fridge, in our shoes etc. its not going to rid the smell completely but it does a pretty damn good job of getting most of it out. a nice, cheap alternative to an air purifier!

i like this method cuz i don't believe in those febreze products that claimed to netralize the smell. if they did then why do they only come scented? maybe cuz they only cover up the smell, i dunno. i like the baking soda method cuz i can shake i can shake it out as opposed to spraying layer upon layer of febreze on the fabric. i also don't know if the chemicals in febreze will do anything to mess up the nice fade i'm so patiently trying to wear into these jeans.

edit: apparently the freezer kills bacteria that cause odors

if tFS would let me, i'd give you a pile of karma for that. wowee. okay, so sbbbjm is hardcore. i am really going to try my best and wait. given how i launder all things after one wear, this is going to be an interesting experiment. so the freezer kills the bacteria - well it's just giving me the warm fuzzies to think about bacteria in my pants. mmm mmm good. i guess the freezer also helps the powder separate from the pants maybe. this is wild. a million thanks. hmmm, am i left to my own judgment to determine when the pants need this sort of treatment? or do i wait for people to give me disgusted looks in elevators?
