Michael Rider - Designer, Creative Director of Celine

I was probably the only one who actually like his POLO RL. I mean it's Polo RL, it's not meant to be high fashion or anything but I did feel like he adds some designs elements to it and the material have been very nice as well. Lot's of great tailoring. I do wish to see his vision for Celine given that he worked at the Old Celine and then there's the now Celine with all the codes embeded by Hedi.

If all the stars align, there's an angle for Rider's Celine that "legitimizes" a wide variety of styles for him to explore from the get-go. Between his Philo credentials, the fact that Philo is designing under her own name now so he needs to distinguish himself from her, Hedi being a sort of secondary founder via the menswear which will make it feel less pathetic when Rider references his immediate predecessor's codes... there's a way for Rider to establish himself as the proverbial secret third thing.

all makes sense and is the right way forward but won't happen , we will get mashed potatoes....

I will be checking his debut collection but I'm not that cheerful. Hedi's hard work to keep Celine alive seems to be doomed. At least Vacarello had YSL's large legacy to recreate archive pieces to save the day but this new guy only got... the new monogram ? or the CC branded products ? good luck working with that...

If this guy could get Celine closer again to Miu Miu crowd adjacent, make it more pop and still keep the staples I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.

It’s not as if CELINE by Hedi Slimane was a design exercise outside menswear. It was all lifestyle and branding.

Its not like Celine was in the brink of extinction before Hedi. He did however flourish it.

Céline has an identity. It’s bourgeois dressing. No matter how you interpret it. Phoebe was bourgeois as much as Hedi was.
As long as Rider don’t try to recreate the awful TikTok era of Hedi.
Céline is so bourgeois that without an edge the brand will be boring very quick though. Phoebe gave an edge, Hedi too, with his sharp tailoring or his rock inspo sometimes.
I hope Rider understands the risks.
