'Old people should just be old and go away' says Lady Gaga's stylist Nicola Formichetti
He's made it big in the world of fashion casting his creative flare on brands such as Mugler and Uniqlo and is most famed for styling Lady Gaga.
But it seems that Nicola Formichetti can't help but spark controversy.
Currently experiencing a career high the 34-year-old was presented with The Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator at the British Fashion Awards last year and he boasts a roster of top clients from Missoni to MAC.
But as media attention mounts it appears Mr Formichetti, who was born in Tokyo, has a tendency to let things slip.
'I think old people should just be old and go away,' he said, apparently without fear that his remarks could spark yet more controversy.
'It's not about being in the industry for ten years anymore: it's about good ideas.' He told Elle.
Appearing in the latest Elle Collection edition, featuring Kate Moss on the cover, his interview is included alongside other industry favourites Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wang and Valentino creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli.
He goes on to reveal Lady Gaga's insecurities and his feelings on the intimidating world of fashion.
'Even in her position, even on top of her game, she still feels like an outsider.
'Gaga doesn't know she is cool. She knows she is a superstar but the fashion industry is completely different for an outsider.
'It still has this elitist feeling - it's really scary.'
His début autumn / winter 2011 womenswear show for the French label Mugler smashed records as the most-watched fashion event of all time, as a result of live streaming and an exclusive preview of Gaga's 'Scheiße' from her album Born
And there is more controversy to come. For his spring / summer 2012 menswear collection he's releasing an explicit sex film starring a transsexual, which will be available to view on the x-rated website XTube.com.
He adds: 'Me and Gaga, our motto is 'f*** fashion' because we love it so much we want to destroy it and start again and keep it fresh.' (dailymail.co.uk)

I have not seen a single original idea from Nicola , maybe he needs to go away. The poor guy is believing in his own hype.I used to like him before the Gaga madness.

This represents the lowest of 'designers' (sans alexander wang)
Perhaps Nicola should focus on 'directing' his newly acquired brand beyond the gimmicks he loves so much. Designers like this are all talk but no content, much like Lady Gaga.
What he doesnt understand, is that fashion beyond all its games, temporality and vanity is also an industry that sells clothes. His 'fresh' and 'new' ideas have nothing to do with how people dress. Margiela had fresh and new ideas that eventually dripped in the mainstream. This guy however is full of BS. He's cheap.

I think that Alaia, Armani, Lagerfeld and the rest should all team up and bring the hammer down on his ***.

WOW I'm not believing he said that....I love Nicola and his creative mind but respect for your elders goes a long way.....
And with a mind like his I'd really like for him to delve deeper into the Mugler Heritage and make some pieces that are actually Mugler-ish....

There is definitely a rise in a younger generation in the industry, but without these "older" people who've paved the way, there would be no industry for these younger people to be in. So Muccia should go away? As should Alaia, Ghesquiere, Kawakubo, Miyake, Gaultier, and countless others? Is he even thinking? Because from what I know, he is not a designer and his name shouldn't even be associated with the word designer. And his styling has been sub par at best. He should shut his mouth and learn the definition of design, then he can speak.

"Me and Gaga, our motto is f*** fashion' because we love it so much we want to destroy it and start again and keep it fresh" Well, let's keep that between the two of them, because I sure as hell don't want the industry to be in the hands on these people that feels the need to destroy it to produce "fresh" ideas. It also says a lot about him with his inability to not bring up her name in every single interview.

The only thing he is riding on is his hype, and the only hype he has was produced from being associated with someone else that is equally, if not, more unoriginal. "It's about good ideas..." Right. What good ideas have you produced? I sure haven't seen any. His statements are nothing more than another trick up his sleeves to garner attention to hide his lack of talent. We'll see if he'll be around in 10 years.

Younger doesn't mean better or more talented. And as a person who is still considered young (as least outside of Hollywood), I think the some of the young should get over themselves. Mostly people with this mentality. Why do young people always seem to be unaware that they'll be the older ones one day? Karma might catch up to them and make them age really badly.

He clearly hasn't had one of Karl's ice cream bars!

Says the one who can't put a decent collection without gimmicks all over.

Alright Mr. Formichetti let me just say something to you: You're in no condition to talk about "old people", because "old people" are currently doing something that you apparently can't, design decent clothes. The only "talent" you seem to have is come up with some ridiculous stuff to put on Lady Gaga's back. Please SHUT UP and keep doing your thing, until you get fired (which hopefully will not take very long).

I don't care for the guy but I read it as a knock against Armani and his outspokenness on things younger designers constantly show. Recently one was about flashy fancy pants (oh snap double joke).

I read this on Gawker .. and apparently, the context was different, he said once ANYONE (him included) gets old, they shud move away and let new emerging talents take over .... still, I think he's a major douche and Im happy people are calling it like it is (and his fug "designs", too).

PS I know its hard not to mention Gaga when we talk about him, but can we PLEASE keep her mentioning to a minimum, it just starts a flame waw between the haters and her little monsters (me being one) and it just makes moderating this thread a bit easier (because believe me, it can get ugly). Thanks!

Really?!?! :lol::shock::woot::D:huh::doh::blink::ninja::yuk::sick:
The guy that only copies other designers ideas and (really) badly, poorly made, constructed and fashionable,......... saying that "old" designers should be out?!?! :ninja:
Speachless by such statement, giving that he only designs s#$%*!
And for his age and judging by his work, how he dares to say something so offensive to the "old" designers like that, just rude! :ninja:
Nicola when you start to create fashion give me a call! BTW your collection was so bad no one wanted to display on a fashion magazine, or deppartement store!

And without old designers there would be no him, god if the douche already annoyed me by ruining and tarnishing the legacy of an astonishing brand, this gets even worse.

I better not see ANY of his editorials, nor any dress on his clients nor any influences in his collections come from "old designers".

I think that Alaia, Armani, Lagerfeld and the rest should all team up and bring the hammer down on his ***.

I would love to hear what Thierry Mugler himself would say... I wouldn't want to know what happens if Thierry meets Nicola alone in an ally at night.....

Someone should prevent this guy from speaking.

I'm quite sure insulting the industry legends isn't going to make fashion any less intimidating to anyone.
