you're really wrong, I have to say Kate Moss is a fashion Icon but Naomi is a worldwide pop Icon, every person in the world knows who's Naomi Campbell, hardly Kate Moss is remembered in America.
You know what that is very interesting

. I think may views of Kate may be biased because a) I am British b) I am a TFSer c) I am exposed to the fashion world... I was very surprised the other day when Americans at college didn't know who Kate Moss was. I was like "Holy crap, do you even know Naomi Campbell" and they said "Duh -we are not stupid". Kate is always in the press here a) Because her face is sooo fashion, so pure and unadulterated and b)because of her rock and roll antics. One of her set is always in the news whether it is Jude or Sadie or Anna Friel or whomever.
But Naomi and Christy and co are universal because that era was like no other. Even the era of Gisele and the Brazilians doesn't compare because the supermodel era collided with so many things, most importantly 80s excess and 'Greed is good' and the opulence of the clothes and the beauties just fitted. It was so much and too much and when we look back at that post 90s minimalism and during the noughties obsession with the 'natural' it seems like another planet, another world. It's a little akin to watching Flash Gordon or Barbarella

or something. You look at Naomi and Christy and they are still as young as ever but then you look at those photos of them together and it seems like they used a time machine. To deny Naomi's influence, you would have to deny an era, deny as Lunabella did

, artists such as Madonna and Michael Jackson -which would be a big mistake because to deny an era, you are denying everything that that era spawned. Without Michael Jackson

for example, you wouldn't have half the artists you have today.
Plus there is the fact that Naomi being one of the greatest black supermodels of all time which never fails to get mentioned. She is the Sidney Poitier of the fashion world but greater than that because with Sidney it was a case of greatness IN SPITE of his blackness. With Naomi, who is famous for her appearance, it is greatness almost BECAUSE of her blackness. It forced the world to accept it, and they did. We wouldn't have any Tyras or Alecs without her. It is sad

to say that it was something as superficial as beauty to make blackness so accepted but whatever it took I suppose.
Ultimately I think fashion people will prefer Kate to Naomi, simply because her beauty is only a beauty that really screams to fashion people. She is the clean cut Yohji Yammamoto coat whereas Naomi is the jewel encrusted Versace dress. I'd rather have the coat. Naomi is barely mentioned in the Kate thread, but look at this thread. However, fashion becomes trully great when it influences the whole world. Kate CAN do that too, via her impeccable dress sense and carefully chosen associations (and nobody with a pair of skinny jeans or a boyfriend in a pork pie hat can deny it) but Naomi and co influenced the world in a whole different way. They showed the sheer power that beauty has. She showed the sheer power that black beauty has. Making beauty so sacred wasn't necessarily a good thing -hey did greed turn out to be good? Nah -but it was a true thing.
I suppose after all the stuff with the golden bull, Kate was inevitable and necessary like the appearance of the ten commandments to Moses. Comparing the two girls is impossible since one led to the other. They didn't coexist in the fashion timescale. In my earlier thread when I talked about Kate not giving interviews and Naomi blabbing away to whoever listened, I wasn't comparing the greatness of they two. I know they are both great. I was just saying that Naomi has so much, she has those iconic pictures that you guys posted above. She has to be careful that her twilight years and her behaviour don't jeopardise, if not the legacy, then at least people's perception of that legacy. After all, a bit of humility never goes amiss. 'I am the greatest' only worked with Muhammed Ali

because he was the greatest and because, well, he said it first! It is not that Kate does not have to be careful too. The cocaine thing will tarnish her with some people although not with me because I am in love with Pete Doherty

. If James Dean hadn't died, he may not have been the icon he is now.
Okay I am gonna stop essay writing now. This thread just got quite interesting. Thanks OMIFAN9 and 90s_fan for all the beautiful photos :flower. I promise I will post photos at the end of the week when I am back at university and am on their superfast internet connection... We will equal the 300 pages of the Kate Moss Candid thread!
