The Architects of Time: Natalia Vodianova

As the 21st century unfolds, so does the realization that we have less time than ever to stand and stare. How can, and should, our society and economy best use its time? It’s to this question that Vanity Fair and UNLIMITED have turned their attention, presenting five individuals each thinking blue-sky about time, and what it means for them. In the third of the series, the model and philanthropist Natalia Vodianova explains how she has converted the time people spend adding “likes” to her social media posts into philanthropy on the go

MAY 23, 2017 10:00 AM

Natalia Vodianova has featured on a whopping 71 Vogue covers in 16 different countries, according to the latest tally. In model terms, and in an age where magazine covers typically go to movie stars and musicians, this is nothing short of spectacular. One could easily put this down to her beauty, but there is much more to the woman they call Supernova.

“When my success came, it was just really overwhelming because in a way I didn’t understand this injustice,” she explained. “Why did I have to have this incredibly difficult childhood and arrive at a place where I am making a lot of money, but I don’t understand why?” Growing up in poverty in the former Soviet Union, Vodianova was forced to sell fruit on the street as a teenager in order to support her single mother and two sisters, one of whom has cerebral palsy.

It was this confusion that gave her the drive to set up The Naked Heart Foundation, which builds safe spaces for children to play in Russia, as well as supporting children with disabilities. “I have this very incredible fashion industry behind me that I always tapped into when we needed a reward for big donors and this is how we have raised almost 40 million euros for Naked Heart Foundation,” she explains.

The Elbi app grew out of yet another discomfort—this time around social media. After once observing that, her “entertaining” fashion pictures, got enormously more likes than posts about their charitable works, Vodianova complained to her friend and social media manager Timon Afinsky. His advice was sage: "He said, you can't take your likes for granted." At the time, there were 5 billion “likes” every day. “That’s when the lightbulb went on for me, and I said, ‘What if we turn all of these meaningless ‘likes’ into something really important?’” And so Elbi was born.

This is charitable giving optimized for the digital age. You download the app, enter your bank details, and from there each day you are presented with a series of causes which you can support financially by pressing the heart button and donating a dollar, or by leaving notes and doodles of support and encouragement. “We call it philanthropy on the go,” the pair explain. Each action earns the user a LoveCoin, which they can in turn spend in the LoveShop, which is packed with exclusive luxury handbags, sneakers, cosmetics and jewellery.

It’s clear from seeing Vodianova and Afinksy together that the pair make an efficient double act. Where Vodianova was initially sceptical about even using social media, Afinsky was there to point out the bigger picture. And now as Vodianova raises five children and travels globally to make these projects happen—all while retaining those key relationships within the fashion industry—it’s Afinsky who holds everything together and keeps things moving smoothly in the app’s Soho offices. The ultimate double act? We think so.

Bruce Weber on His Friend, the Supermodel Natalia Vodianova: "Her Kindness Is Always Something I Want To Celebrate"

I didn’t need to be listening to a Leonard Cohen song to write about the romance of Natalia Vodianova. She was born to be in front of a Zeiss camera lens; born to be an adoring mother, her five children backlit around her in a field of high grass; born to laugh at her own flirtatiousness; and born to be the sort of rare and unforgettable beauty whose kindness toward those less fortunate is never-ending.
I have known Natalia for 15 years—I first photographed her in the *Dominican Republic for this magazine after she had just arrived in America, and meeting her was like a thunderclap. It felt as if a cloud had burst open above my head, and suddenly this extraordinary woman had landed in front of my camera. She invaded my senses so completely that I only wanted to photograph her or my dogs every day. Natalia never knew how I felt until she saw my first published portraits of her—her reaction was to just laugh and laugh at what I had asked her to wear or not wear.

When I made “I Get Along,” my third video for the Pet Shop Boys, Natalia seemed a little skeptical about her ability to act. She was dressed in a paper gown by the famed Broadway designer William Ivey Long. Our director of photography, Stuart Dryburgh—who had been nominated for an Academy Award for cinematography for Jane Campion’s film The Piano—was immediately infatuated with her. In one of the first shots of the day, Natalia hesitantly walked up to a wall we had covered in photographs of babies, punk rockers, and juvenile delinquents. Guess what she did as the camera rolled? She pretended to faint, collapsing into the arms of a boy in a paper suit standing next to her just before her head hit the floor. She had all the drama necessary to be an actress!
Over the years, I’ve concocted one love story after another for Natalia in my photographs. Whether she’s with Ed Harris or a rodeo cowboy, Oscar de la Renta or Cody the bear, *Natalia has always played along like a good sport. But I think the only costar she developed a genuine crush on was my pit bull, Billie Holiday. I photographed them together once—Natalia *balancing Billie on a vintage bicycle from India, as if they were off to visit Gayatri Devi, the maharani of Jaipur. Billie was a rescue dog we found in Miami, and I imagined *Natalia connecting with her story on some deep level; for both of them, their early days had been a difficult journey. I admire how Natalia’s struggle as a young girl inspired her to create the Naked Heart Foundation, which has built so many playgrounds and helped so many children with *disabilities in Russia. Her kindness is always something I want to celebrate in my photographs.

Natalia Vodianova, Supermodel Supermom, Can Do It All
by Kristin Tice Studeman
October 13, 2016 4:01 pm

34-year-old Natalia Vodianova is not only one of the world’s top supermodels, she's also a businesswoman, a fierce philanthropist, activist, a proud wife and the mother of five children. In her latest role, she's the David Yurman spokeswoman, starring in the iconic jewelry brand’s new ad campaign, lensed by photographer Bruce Weber with creative direction by Shahid & Company, alongside the likes of Jean Campbell, Dilone, and Mitchell Slaggert. “I love that I got to play a role that’s a lot like me in real life,” said the Russian model of the campaign and short film, titled "It Had To Be You", which was shot in Southampton and styled by Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele. Here, she talks to W about collaborating with Weber, her work-life balance, and the upcoming election.

You have worked with Bruce Weber for quite a long time. What is your first memory of working with him?
Bruce! Oh my goodness, it was a long time ago. I think the first time we did a special Balenciaga shoot, I must have been 20 or 21. Working with Bruce has always been very special.

You are quite selective when it comes to fashion shoots and campaigns these days. What is about David Yurman that made you want to be involved?
I worked with David and Sybil [Yurman] before and I absolutely love their brand. I love the project and my perspective of the brand is the idea of a lucky charm and putting it on a bracelet. They took this idea and expanded it to a whole universe of jewelry. To me, everything they have is something about lucky and something about charms. They can mark an occasion in your life but live together and just and signify so much more than beautiful jewelry.

Do you have lucky charms?
I love jewelry and there’s jewelry I put on for special occasions when I need extra support. It’s different things. Diane von Furstenberg, for example, gave me a gold coin that her father wore during the war. He carried this gold coin around with him in case of emergency. He never used it but it was so significant to him because in the end it became his lucky charm. Diane gave me one and I made it into a necklace. This is my lucky charm, and, of course, my ring that my husband Antoine gave me. I never take it off. My grandfather’s ring was something he always wore and I wear it everyday hidden.
Diane’s necklace, of course, I can’t just replicate that to give it to other people, but David Yurman and I are collaborating with my platform Elbi on something to go in the Love Shop. The Love Shop is a place where our users are rewarded for doing good things. David Yurman gave us a very similar sort of charm necklace for the Love Shop that looked a little like my DVF coin and hopefully some young kid will have the spirit of that charm, but by David Yurman from the Love Shop.

David Yurman is a brand that’s really about women who are empowered and strong. What women inspire you and your work?
Stella McCartney, Diane [von Furstenberg], lots of others. It is all about empowerment right now. I was just a luncheon for UN week and I was sitting there before I received my award and I was listening to other women like Livia Firth. These women had me shaking. I was so impressed by them. I was going, “Now I have to follow up this?” It is so nerve-wracking. They were so inspiring and I wanted to go up there and inspire them. I found this audience of 200 women, rather than audience of thousands of people, more intimidating. Women are such incredible powerhouses. Their voice is so strong and they are so beautiful when they are strong and it’s incredibly inspiring.
My most important woman in my life and my biggest inspiration has always been my grandmother. She is just incredible. She really showed me how to be an incredible wife, an incredible leader, incredible mother, role model, self-healer and self-lover. She is spiritual and at the same time pragmatic.

You are such an impressive woman with your modeling career, your app, your charity. What’s next for you?
I have enough on my plate! I just want to develop further the projects I already have in place. Elbi is a very, very big ambition and I think it’s going to take a lot of my time for years to come. At the moment, I am not looking for anything else. What it is a an app where we invite our users, which are young people in general, to do something good on their mobile device. For example, let’s say there is a little girl in a hospital and she loves giraffes. We draw her one and then she can color it in while she is in the hospital. That is very sweet because it really will make a difference for this little girl. Then the way make a difference for this charity is for example, you have done a drawing and I really love your drawing and your giraffe is so cool, I will love your giraffe and that will be a microdonation of $1. You can love other peoples’ content or the campaign you like and the causes you care about. You have raised a dollar for the charity. With Elbi, if you have nothing you can become a fundraiser, and if you have a dollar you can donate it. You are rewarding other people for doing good. Then why it’s important is because right now the ‘like’ button is pressed 5 billion times a day just on Facebook. That is a lot of action! Our aim at Elbi is to turn at last one percent of those likes into love and to create real impact that our users care about.

How do you deal with the stress in your life?
Go jewelry shopping! No, a few different ways. For me, everything is in balance. I do modeling, I am a crazy philanthropist, I dedicate a lot of hours into something that is a real fight. The balance of those things is what helps me to stay sane. When I am focused on being a mother I really disconnect from everything else. I really love being with my children, but when I am modeling, that allows me to be a princess and everyone is running around putting me in a beautiful dress and doing my hair and nails. It’s a fairytale, unique experience that is also very restful from being a mother, which is so hands on. Suddenly, you are not a princess. You have little princes and princesses that you are the slave of and wanting to make happy. Then as a philanthropist it’s just kind of giving meaning to my happy, fabulous life as a mother and a model. It also gives sense and meaning to my roots and my past and where I came from. I had a very tough childhood and it’s not something you can easily shake off and forget. There were millions of people in the same situation and I have not forgotten them.

I am curious, what do you think about the U.S. presidential race right now?
I am definitely not only on Hillary’s side but completely against Trump. Double support for her. I am on Hillary’s side because she is a woman and it would be a historic moment for the equality of women out there, but also because I also don’t see where the world would be going if Donald Trump became our president. It is quite a scary thought.

^ Yeah, it's the hair. In fact, I forgot the last time I liked it.

Nastassia, thank you for all those articles and pictures! So much input into this thread!

I wonder how relevant today Natalia would have been, had it not been for her two high-profile marriages?
Sure, she is a good model and the early 2000s were massive for her, but she wouldn't have had these contracts and postions that she has today.
I think she still works for Etam, and they probably won't let her go soon.

^ That's the thing with all models. They build up a career and then they are just relevant because of they're recognized.

Natalia's first marriage sure has got her some fame, but her second marriage didn't seem to add up to it as she was well-recognized already.

Thank you for answering my question. To be honest she isn't married to Antoine Arnault, it's her boyfriend. Even though she mentioned in an interview that she sees Antoine as her husband and doesn't see the need in another marriage soon.

Her pic for US Vogue is my fave from the whole editorial. Such a beauty.

I remember reading this and I was left with the impression that she sees him as her husband indeed, but that she also wants to make it official, hopefully soon. And that was a while ago so I guess there won't be a marriage. Something about Russia and France and that it would be right to make him her husband...something of that nature was the quote.
