Natalia Vodianova, continued:

A few weeks ago, Natalia Vodianova travelled to Athens, Greece, for a direct-booked appearance at a fashion show for a local designer, Celia Kritharioti, which took place at the Athens Hilton hotel. Natalia gave an interview which provides some interesting new info - parts of what follows may appear elsewhere, but it is interesting because Natalia was speaking herself to a journalist.
The story about her show appearance and the interview is from "Life and Style" magazine, May 2003. The photos below were taken by Mara Desypri, inside the Athens Hilton - Natalia is wearing several of the creations modeled for the show.

Natalia arrived at Athens airport with her husband, Justin Portman, her son, a nanny and a Viva agency person. The agency person gave the journalist a copy of an article on Natalia that appeared in the UK Telegraph fashion section, which gave some details about her life in Nizni Novgorod (ex-Gorki) and her visit to a disco which she frequented when she used to live there - according to the Telegraph piece, shorly after midnight, as she and her friends were drinking some locally-produced vodka and watching members of the local mafia dancing and flirting, one man appeared with a knife and tried to slash her face - the man was an ex-boyfriend and a schoolmate of hers".
No news so far - here is a translation of what Natalia herself actually said:

" I was born in Nizni Novgorod in 1982. It used to be called Gorki. It's he third largest city in Russia. I never met my father. My mother had three children by three different husbands. I am the oldest, the middle one is 15 y.o. and has mental and mobility problems, and the youngest one is 7 y.o. Some time ago, my mother was divorced and is now back with the father of her second child. She is in her early forties. It is common in Russia to have children at a young age. My closest friends all have children. I remember when I was six years old and the communist system collapsed. That's when the misery started. We were waiting for hours in lines for food, and I can assure you that I wouldn't eat for days because my younger sisters had a more urgent need for food than I did. It's difficult to find good memories from my childhood years. I had so many problems in my everyday life that I had no time to think about my future. In school, I was a very bad student, not because I had comprehension problems, but because I had to work to help my mother. At home, the situation was unbearable. Five people lived in a small flat, one on top of another. My mother's boyfriend was drinking and beating her. I was trying to protect her, but with little effect. My mother worked at night and I was looking after my two sisters, Oksana and Kristina. When I was eleven, I started to sell fruit and vegetables in the street, to help us survive. I was waking up at four o'clock in the morning to go to the food market, after that I was going to school, and then looking after my sisters. At fifteen, I left home and went to live with a girlfriend of mine. The groceries-selling business allowed us to earn a living. My only entertainment was taking part in the local theater group, where we read poems and works of classical writers. That was where a "talent hunter" from Paris came, and selected me as a fashion model. I was 17 years old. I went to Moscow, and three months later, I was flying to Paris. I will never forget that date: December 1st 1999. It was my first trip abroad. I lived in a hotel with a girl from Germany for six months, and then lived together with a French physician for another six. I never thought that one could live and earn so much money as a model. I did a photo shoot for a magazine, and them my career started to take off. (while she was talking, Justin Portman was reading a book) I met Justin during a dinner at restaurant "Georges" in Paris. I went there with a friend, another model. Another friend had invited me to that dinner, and he kept insisting that he would get me married with someone very wealthy. Justin sat at the table with my friend, but after five minutes, he came and sat next to me. We had a bad fight that night. He was telling me I was the prettiest girl he ever saw in his life, but I don't like "pushy" types. The next day, we met by chance, for coffee, just below the agency (Viva). From what I learned later, he had arranged that. He apologised for the previous night's behaviour, and claimed he was drunk. He was following me systematically for a month, he was coming to Paris every Saturday from London, looking for chances so that we could get together. Slowly, I understood that I was also interested in him. He took me to his home, where I met his family, and everything followed a normal course. Nine months after our first meeting, I was pregnant. We had discussed this and agreed that if it happened, we would proceed - and it happened. I was eight months pregnant when we decided to get married. We got married in St Petersburg, and our families met for the first time. The marriage was grandiose but not offending. It went on for three days. I was finally happy. Since then, we always go everywhere together, the three of us. With Justin, we have never seperated for more than 10 days. We now live in NYC, where most of my jobs are (her CK contract is said to be worth 1.6 million Euros, about the same in US dollars). If it wasn't for my job, I don't think we would stay in America. Justin paints, but he mostly follows me around the world. We visited Nizni Novgorod three times up to now. Things there are very dangerous. I have repeatedly asked my mother to move out, but she refuses. I bought her a house there, and she thinks herself as a queen. She is enjoying the amenities of her newfound life. But I am afraid they might kidnap them, because there is no Police or Law working there"

Some more info - her son, Lucas, is now 16 months old. Justin Portman, 34 y.o., is the second (or third, according to other sources) son of the late Viscount Edward Henry Berkeley Portman, studied Arts at Harrow University and in 1997 held an exhibition of his works in London, where all the paintings were sold. The Portman castle is in Dorset, England.

That is all mentioned in the mag - the same story, with some differing details (one web account from vogue.uk here has appeared in other magazines - in a 17-page special in US Vogue, in the March issue of Russian Bazaar and even in a special show on prime time Russian television, which was said to be a "tearjerker". Sorrenti is reportedly shooting Natalia for her second CK season, and the ads have now started appearing in Europe and elsewhere - UK and Russian tabloids have already begun dirt digging, with the alleged father said to be feeling neglected, and so on.
Since Natalia was herself speaking, there are a few important points to be noticed. There are variations of her story - for example that she was discovered in a model agency, a Sports Hall, that the poetry sessions were at a "modeling academy" (US Vogue), etc - either by a photographer or a talent hunter, who may be French or Russian (in that case her agent, Giya), that she met Justin Portman in Nizni Novgorod where he was taking part in chess tournaments, etc - a source and the Vogue story corraborate the "Georges' restaurant version, probably the real one).
Her trip to Moscow, where she stayed for only three months, probably unable to find a major agency there (a source indicates that one of the top Russian photographers rejected her for a Bazaar editorial during that time) took place in Aug or Sept 1999, and she flew to Paris on December 1st 1999
I was in Moscow in late July 1999 following the Russian Model Look 1999 model contest, and I paid close attention to Russian fashion mags at the time - I don't remember seeing her anywhere I used to buy French Elle regularly throughout 1999 and 2000, and she certainly had not appeared in French mags during 1999, as others have mistakenly claimed - she says herself that she only travelled to Paris in early Dec 1999. She does appear in several French Elle, French Marie Claire, German Elle and Italian Marie Claire editorials in 2000 and 2001, and in several Milan campaigns, such as Swish Jeans, Compagnia Italiana, RoccoBarocco, Miss Sixty, Moschino, Anna Molinari, Philosophy, Versus, etc - before she became "famous". She also traveled to Japan during that time, and appeared in a number of Japanese mag editorials. A mystery remains about the pictures depicting her modeling a line of swimwear in Turkey, and showing some flesh too. She did state in her Athens interview that travelling to Paris in Dec 1999 was her first trip outside Russia - I have no idea when the Turkey pics were taken, could be anytime from May 1999 to late 2001. A newspaper article mentioned that she has relations in the Sebastopol area of Crimea, where she often travelled with her family - pictures of her grandparents (probably on the mother's side, and Sebastopol area residents) have appeared in Russian magazines. There are several "black holes" in her story, but with her media exposure increasing, I am sure the full story about her past will come out.
Update - some more info about her Turkey swimwear modeling. I still can't tell for sure exactly when she was photographed - but here is what I know (thanks for the info from elementscans). Natalia is modeling the "Stella" line of swimwear in these pics - a brand of the Turkish "Kom" company. The actual scanned pics appeared in a Turkish magazine and were scanned in October 2001. No indication of when the actual shooting took place - in fact, in the current "Kom" website under the "Stella" heading, you can see many more (small size) pics of Natalia in "Stella" swimsuits, from the same group of pics, obviously shot before October 2001. Several famous models, like Cindy Crawford, Adriana Karembeu, Eva Herzigova, etc have modeled in Turkey, mainly for the "Zeki Triko" catalogue - as for "Stella", it seems that in addition to Natalia, Kasia Smutniak has also modeled for the same brand. This leads me to believe that the job was perhaps booked through Milan, since both girls are with the WhyNot agency and both appeared - in different seasons - in Swish Jeans campaigns. (Hurriyetim, in June 2001, mentioned that Natalia and Kasia did shoots for "Stella" and Natalia was already on French Elle)
My best guess from the info I have so far - Natalia shot these swimsuit pics sometime between late 2000 and October 2001, perhaps in Spring 2001, in time for the summer season - the job probably booked via Milan.

There is a new star twinkling on the catwalks. A slight, doll-like model with Slavonic cheekbones, slanting Bambi eyes and Brooke Shields eyebrows, she stands out a mile from the rest of the skinny clones on the runways. All this week in Paris, Natalia Vodianova was referred to as "the next Kate Moss". Like the original super-waif, she retained her own identity, whether she was laced into sexy corsets, girly skirts, punky bondage or prim outfits.

Natalia Vodianova: is she the next Kate Moss?It has taken less than two years for the 20-year-old from Gorki, a small city 300 miles south west of Moscow, to achieve super league catwalk status and, as a result, to land a clutch of lucrative designer campaigns. Last week, she signed a deal - reported to be in the region of a $1 million - to become the new face of Calvin Klein. She has also starred in campaigns for Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Versus, and has graced the covers of ID, W, Numero and Italian and Japanese Vogue.
Natalia first raised eyebrows when, while six months pregnant, she appeared in the Marc by Marc Jacobs campaign, shot by Juergen Teller in 2001. She made her catwalk debut for Jacobs's spring 2002 collection.
She now lives in trendy downtown Tribeca in New York with her British-born contemporary artist husband Justin Portman and their son, Lucas. She has come a long way since she was discovered, aged 17, in the small town of Nizhniy Novgorod in Russia. The eldest of three children, Natalia comes from a poor family, and sold fruit on the street before and after school each day to help make ends meet. "I then had to take care of the family and do my homework," she says.
"My only holiday ever was going to stay with my grandparents and cousin in Sebastopol for a holiday on the Black Sea when I was six. My cousin had been to America and brought back cherry toothpaste and M&Ms. After that, I was attracted to anything foreign. I love living in New York, because I love food and you can get anything from all over the world there."
