Olivia Palermo

Well, Olivia thinks it's acceptable. It didn't really work out for her, though, did it? :D

Her outfits in that blog don't look especially fabulous, especially that bizarre black and white dress that makes her look like a chess board.

Yes, I daresay it did. :D I wonder if that was part of the backlash?

You are totally right about Genevieve.
She actually comes pretty much straight from the gutter and is really a glorified prostitute imo. She is the kept mistress of a famous Italian painter (whose wife has more class, beauty and elegance than Genevieve could ever hope for) but unlike the better bred and prettier Olivia, she is an outstanding net worker.
She also had a very good social climbing strategy: she aimed to be part of the artsy crowd not the social crowd, which was a stroke of genius. Art people are more liberal, less likely to care about your origins, and the social girls don't feel threatened by her so she is relatively accepted in this circle too, as a curiosity at least.
Olivia, however, was just plain dumb about it. She arrived on the social scene like a bullet and aimed straight to the top spot. It's equivalent to trying to snatch the crown off the most popular girl in school on the prom night.
She got rejected, of course. And it isn't a question of breeding: Tinsley has none, her family is country as hell and she is the queen bee. Why? Because she kept her eyes on the top prize (her husband) and played the part better than anyone else. It's all about strategy.

Oh, and none of these girls are socialites in the genuine sense of the word (aside from Aerin Lauder and a couple of other). They are party girls. NYC Society is dead.

On Topic: Olivia is gorge but I could not describe a single outfit she's ever worn from memory.
Her style is neither bad nor good, it's just inexistant to the point that she could be running around naked I would not notice the difference.

I won't get into how GJones mkes her money, but you have to give it to her. She has to be an awesome networker to have climbed to the top being BLACK and UNEDUCATED. You may have a point about the art scene but Lydia Fenet hasn't had the success Genevieve has had either. . .

I was very excited to watch Olivia's rise when she came onto the scene. But I agree, she overplayed her hand, put all her cards on the table and gave people an opportunity to throw a wrench in her game. But, I guess she's still somewhat in the scene.

However, when I watch her with her cousin on the City I can't help but feel bad for her. It's like, he's her only friend in the city. :( (I mean I know it's not true but it seems like that when they're in her apartment, eating dinner, etc).

i like that she's polished.

i don't understand it when ppl say she should change- change for what? To fit in with our sterotypes of leggings and boots wearing boho/grunge that hollywood starlets espouse?

i think Olivia is carving out a niche for herself as a WASPY type, "social". Much more enjoyable than the generic 18 year old starlet with the faux "high-low" stylist garb.

I think she's trying a little TOO hard to construct herself as a socialite, but I do think she is interesting to watch.

great post Harumi well said and well explained! i had no idea about a few of these situations..
I still don't understand at all how Tinsley made it to the top, she's not attractive or talented? or had any family money or standing? is it just due to her husband? Olivia had more than her, a wealthy family , she's pretty but she's too greedy, it's easy to see.. i agree that her looks lately are due to her style changes..

She does look like the little girl at school trying hard to fit in with the popular girls but Olivia just comes across as trying slightly too hard and a little fake imo.

^ it's true, and that's exactly what made her such an outcast..

she tried too hard, was too transparent and fake about it, rose too fast and as a result- she's looking for fame through the City because she's such a black sheep in the actual circles she's on the periphery of.

i can't say i blame her, but no she's not the sort of person i'd want to be friends with either. but then again that whole "social set" is a pretty superficial and vapid world in the first place.

So I stumbled on this thread last night. Struck my the beauty of this lady's face the first name that came to mind is Cherly Cole who look share the same look. Googling her I also fell of my chair to find out she's only 22, she looks like she's 26-28 years old. Stunningly beautiful though.

I downloaded the three first episodes of the City but her beauty was no where to be seen, her face looks more narrow and less bubbly in motion. But nontheless she's gorgoues. To bad her attitude and personlity is horrid.

its weird how the show wants to portray her as mother figure to whitney. she does nothing but chase and question everything whitney does. i.e. when she asked whitney like 10 times where jay was or she does nothing but talk about how she should show whitney the ropes about living in nyc as-if whitney's clueless and 12 yrs old.

side-note, "the city" has horrible edits and voice overs does anyone else notice??? lol

So who does she talk to when she goes out? I mean, isn't she at the same events as Tinsley sometimes? I know I have lots of questions but I find this fascinating.

^at 90% of those events no body speaks to anyone. Everyone huddles in groups of 3-5 and only occasionaly breaks this. And for press hungry socials like OP, TM, etc. they really just come for the photo line and leave after about 15 minutes, literally.

i don't know i used to think she was drop dead gorgeous but all i see now is how much her face has changed due to the surgery and how fake she looks with all that make up!

she's starting to remind me of Heidi from the Hills...and that's not a good thing! lol

I think that we all know just how "real" The City is and that in that context Olivia probably doesn't care about Jay as much as it seems but has to keep on asking because she's prompted by producers to keep up the story line. It's so contrived it would insult a monkey's intelligence. The City makes The Hills look like artistic cinema that could compete with Citizen Cane.
Also, it seems that Olivia is caking more and more makeup on. In that scene in the apartment with her cousin it looked five inches thick. She's a beautiful girl who would be better served with makeup that just heightened the effect of those lovely features.
I love her clothes though and her hair and accessories are always spot on.
