Phoebe Philo’s Anti-Distribution Distribution Strategy​

A friend texted me on Friday that Austin’s ByGeorge had become one of the chic local retailers now carrying Phoebe Philo’s LVMH-backed namesake brand. No surprise, given that ByGeorge is run by Molly Nutter, a former Barneys exec with great industry relationships and an excellent client base. I was surprised, however, to discover that P.P. is also being distributed through Mytheresa.com via a private portal accessible only to certain personal shoppers and V.I.C.s—a major evolution from the launch strategy where Phoebe Philo was available online exclusively at PhoebePhilo.com. (A rep for Mytheresa had no comment.)
The thinking behind this is smart. In the new LuxExperience group, which also includes Yoox and Net-a-Porter, Mytheresa is being positioned as the A’maree’s to Net-a-Porter’s Barneys. One is ultra-exclusive, and the other is pretty exclusive, but also carries stuff that gets discounted to under $100 at the end of the summer sales season. Will it work? Only if people want to buy what’s on offer. A’maree’s, by the way, is also carrying Pheebs. (Wow, she’s really going to hate it if I start referring to it like that.)

It will be interesting to see her work in that context and in fact to see if it’s similar to the Celine stores from her era.

It would pain me to shop in pounds but I hope there will be some boutiques exclusives.

I can dream of a show at the store? Or at least a mini presentation? It would create an anticipation for LFW…

so excited to see her brand develop. Hope she'll do shows at some point.
I honestly find her whole approach very logical and the pared down aesthetic of her clothes and campaigns are a nice foundation to build on. Im sure when she'll do a show there will be also space for a more thematic approach and 'show pieces' to create a halo effect, but in her current model it just doesn't make sense to do it this way. If I was woman and had the budget id be all over her clothes, not only because theyre beautiful but also because its kinda hot.

looking at whats all out there most of her RTW have a lasting quality and is sexy and yet also reserved for the real world (which we often forget while discussing and consuming on line fashion) her clothes are still radical.

I am not fan of most of the shoes to be frank as a woman i would not be looking at this category but rest yes mostly

For a brand that has only started releasing products 2 years ago and developed retail last year, it’s quite fast. So no, not groundbreaking but great nevertheless.
