about clothes......

To softgrey, Nueva and stilista:

i have a doubt how do u pick the clothes for your shooting..here is a small market so more or less you could know almost everything about the offer (clothes and accesories) but how is it in big cities.......they restrict you to use certain labels/designers? are u allowed yo use less known brands, etc, etc?

regards,xone

Hmnnn... I don't know if I really understand your question...
let me see if I can answer it...

For editorial, the type of clothing a stylist/fashion editor pulls depends of course on the type of fashion story they're trying to create (ie: a story on tweeds, or a story on patterns, or maybe it's an eighties story, or a disco story... etc...). The choice of what specific designers/brands to feature in the story can sometimes become a political thing (ie: using clothing by designers/brands who advertise regularly in a magazine). If you're a top stylist in a big city, than you should have access to showrooms, press houses, and studios and can pull or borrow directly from these companies themselves. I'm not sure what you mean by less known brands, but I have seen editorial where they mix high-end designer fashion with lower priced streetwear brands like stussy and supreme for example, or gap and nike... maybe even h&M... stuff like that.... sometimes even the models' own clothing if it works in the story. so I think that the clothing used in a story is really up to the stylist and their particular sensibility and point of view...

did i answer you question?

I have huge respect for every part of the creative process. I am a gigantic fan of alex white & the whole W team and many of the bazaar & vogue stylists too.
but dont try to say that paolo roversi & juergen teller & bruce weber & other worldclass photogs get paid $150 a day by fairchild/W. check out philip-lorca dicorcia, a literal art gallery & museum fine art photographer who also shoots for W. he doesnt work for $150 a day & its wrong to suggest that legendary worldclass photogs will work for that. and the well-known stylists like alex white have titled masthead positions with fairchild & a nice yearly salary contract far beyond $150 a day. likewise grace coddington and tonne goodman & elissa santisi and all the great photogs that us vogue employs. none work for $150 a day.

yes....thanks!

yes nueva thanks...my question goes more for personal xperience and about the freedom u have to work with big designers and less known brands......but i agree everything is political..........thanks again! :D

grrr the movement here is so slow. There's only so much we can do, and unless people respond we kinda stuck doing clean and crisp commercial. The only slightly edgy mag we had just went under, and even all the stuff to pull in the city is like blah, I have to fly or ship stuff in all the time. I enjoy doing art directing too, and it's awsome when i'm given the chance too. Lady greay, i'm not sure why your so caught up in this, we're all having lively chat about our own work, while you being redundant about this 150 day rate thing. It's kind of like being the head judge at the internatioanl hague court, you'd make more money being a judge in the states, but you work there for the love and prestige of it. What is it you do exactly?? And why aren't you throwing actual numbers at us? It's soooo different being a fashion admirer than a fashion industry person, things are alot different than you'd think they'd be...

And by the way, stellar photographers work for free all the time. It's called a "creative" we all do them, and we all enjoy doing them...I wonder what you're gonna say about that one!

numbers

go to the first post in this thread. the questions regard world famous photographers.
testino makes a few million like maybe $3-4 million take home in a good year, hes a conde nast contact man.
meisel is slightly above that maybe $5 million take home in a good year as he's been doing it longer.
klein makes $1-2 million take home in a great year.
kadel also takes home $1 mill in a great year. <edit>
<edit>we're talking about the world's greatest photographers & stylists.

Sorry Xone, just saw your question...I can only answer from a personal point of view, but I've never really been restricted as to what I can use.

Some magazines I've worked for have stipulations (Prada, Gucci, Chanel type labels preferred) but I always at least try to introduce some of the younger labels as I think their readers might actually want to see something they haven't heard of before. Quite often the piece from the 'unknown' designer gets the biggest reaction on the day.

I use small British/European/US designers where possible alongside the big players as I like to give them a bit of a break. Most of the showrooms with the larger designers will house relative unknowns for a season or two and it's a good chance to see some new names without having to travel 20 miles out of town. I also try to keep on top of really new or just out of college designers as they often do good accessories or something that can 'make' a photo.

Some editors have requested I try to use clothes from the advertisers if possible, but if it doesn't fit into the story I'm not obligated to. I know other publications who have stronger guidelines though.

You're right, Canada is only toytown, too bad our magazines have only booked Naomi Cambell, Daria Werbowy, Jessican Stam, Evangilista, and Yasmin Warsame...it's just too bad that the Macy's campaign is done here too. *sigh*

To Xone: Are those all clothes from local designers?

I LOVE Canada!!

Don't talk like I have an anti-Canada bias.
I LOVE Canadians like liisa, stam, heather, daria, tasha & more.
My answers about salaries for the top TOP TOP! photographers in america werre correct.
there is no canadian magazine that is regarded like W so dont compare your rates with roversi's or weber's.
and W's stylists & models & photographers and supermodels DONT earn $150 a day so that falsehood had to be corrected.
I LOVE Canada and dont think I dont love its models.
O! Canada!
we are neighbours & we are friends.
good luck in the business ;)

agh! reading this back and forth banter is driving me nuts!!! Squash it already. Didn't we end this debate long ago????

FINE! I think everyone realizes and can agree that most (but not all) people involved in editorial aren't making as much money as they do on advertising gigs. That's a given. Why even bother getting into specific numbers. Folks like Alex White or Carine Roitfield or Emmanuelle Alt are probably all under contract with their respective publications... or are even considered staff on the magazine, and make a regular salary!

stop the hating.

Softgrey and I don't have scanners...that's probably because we've been doing too many editorials and can't afford them.
i do not have a scanner because my agency has always taken care of such things... ;) ...we don't call them 'creatives'...i've never heard that term...we call it a test...and everyone still does them...it's fun...

nice pics tristan...i like your style...and thanks for the compliment... :flower:

Dude, that's totally rowdy, free things that agencies have no artistic control over are called creatives here, and tests are things that models pay for to start their portfolios. Damn elite, I did a creative with one of their models, and i got a disgruntled call saying "umm sorry but we can't use any of these pictures, her lips are open in alot of them which is too sexual for us" dude!!! what the hell??

Softgrey is an agent?

Haha, you're quite the sassy one aren't you? Yeah paid testings are good, quick and easy, but tests are such a good time. What agency are you with? Oh, and can I ask you a question, how stingy are the agencies in new york about stuff, are they particular about wardrobe, etc when you do a test?
