Gemma's mother comments....and offers an interesting nugget of info...

Mrs Ward, however, declined to comment on reports that her daughter and Ledger had been seeing each other after the breakdown last year of his relationship with Michelle Williams, with whom the actor has a daughter.

"I'm not willing to comment on that," Mrs Ward told The Australian.

She said the Ward family was devastated by the news of Ledger's death.

"He was such a lovely young man," she said.

"He was a delightful man, and I think it's just a tragic accident that has occurred."

Mrs Ward said her daughter was currently in New York but would not say when the model last saw Ledger.

'I've been advised to put you in touch with the publicist in New York," she said.

"I anticipate (Gemma) will be coming home for the premiere of the movie The Black Balloon but she will probably attend an event in Los Angeles at the end of the week with (Ledger's) father."

Of COURSE Ambien is evil. Meds are evil. They should be an extreme measure but people don't use them that way.

agreed. IMO people are far too liberal with their use of medication; most of the time they don't even know what it is they're taking, beyond the brand name. Brilliant. :ninja:

Heath Ledger into 'diet Coke, cigarettes'

HEATH Ledger was anxious about the breakdown of his relationship with the mother of his child while he was home in Perth for Christmas, a friend said.

But Perth model Sophie Ward, the sister of supermodel Gemma who had been romantically linked with Ledger, said she did not believe he had a problem with drugs.

She said Ledger, who was found dead in New York yesterday after a suspected sleeping pill overdose, did not drink any alcohol during several nights out in Perth.

"He was clean and wasn't drinking any alcohol or taking drugs," Ms Ward told The West Australian newspaper.

"He smoked cigarettes, but that's about it. He was drinking diet Coke when we were together and he said he was very committed to not drinking alcohol.
"I don't believe he took his own life deliberately."

But Ms Ward said Ledger was distressed about his split with Michelle Williams and being away from his two-year-old daughter, Matilda.

"We went to the movies and just did normal stuff ... but he was a bit edgy. He couldn't really relax," Ms Ward said.

"He said he was going to London but was quite upset because he couldn't see his daughter as much as he'd like to.

"He was travelling so much and I think he was just frustrated with it all."

Well Michelle left him for a reason...it's just a shame he couldn't get it together. It seems like being cut off so much from his daughter and Michelle screwed him up a lot...

He said this in an interview

This past fall, when asked how fatherhood had changed his life, Heath replied,
Oh, God -- where do you start? I guess you're kind of forced into respecting yourself more. You learn more about yourself through your child. I think you also look at death differently -- it's like a catch-22. I feel good about dying now, because I'm alive through her, but at the same time you don't want to die because you want to be around for the rest of her life.

Updated, 6:10 p.m. | The masseuse who discovered the body of Heath Ledger in a Manhattan apartment on Tuesday twice called a friend of his, the actress Mary-Kate Olsen, before calling 911, New York City police officials said on Wednesday. The officials, who provided new details about Mr. Ledger’s death, emphasized that no illegal drugs were found in the apartment and that there were no obvious signs of suicide. Tests on a rolled-up $20 bill that was found in the apartment found no evidence that the bill had been used to handle drugs, they said.
According to the police, around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a housekeeper, Teresa Solomon, arrived at the apartment, at 421 Broome Street in SoHo, to do household chores. At about 1 p.m., she went into Mr. Ledger’s bedroom to change a light bulb in an adjacent bathroom; she found him on the bed face down, with the sheet pulled up to his shoulders, and heard him snoring.
A masseuse, Diana Wolozin, arrived to give Mr. Ledger a massage about 2:45 p.m. At 3 p.m., after Mr. Ledger did not emerge from his bedroom, with the door closed, the masseuse called him on his cellphone but got no answer. She entered the bedroom and saw him lying in bed. She took a massage table out of the closet and began to set it up near his bed. She then went over to him and shook him, but got no response. Using his cellphone, she used a speed-dial button to call Ms. Olsen in California to seek her guidance, knowing Ms. Olsen to be a friend of Mr. Ledger’s.
According to the authorities, Ms. Wolozin told Ms. Olsen that Mr. Ledger was unconscious. Ms. Olsen said she would call some private security people she knew in New York, and hung up. Ms. Wolozin again shook Mr. Ledger, called Ms. Olsen a second time, and said she believed the situation was grave and would call 911.
Ms. Wolozin called 911 at 3:26 p.m. to say that Mr. Ledger was not breathing. The call occurred less than 15 minutes since she had first seen him in bed and only a few moments after the first call to Ms. Olsen. The 911 operator urged Ms. Wolozin to try to revive Mr. Ledger, but Ms. Wolozin’s efforts were not successful.
Emergency medical workers arrived at 3:33 p.m., at almost exactly the same moment as a private security guard summoned by Ms. Olsen. The medical workers moved his body to the floor and then used a defibrillator and CPR, to no avail. Mr. Ledger was pronounced dead at 3:36 p.m. By that point, two other private security guards summoned by Ms. Olsen had arrived, as had police officers.
The police said that all five witnesses — Ms. Solomon, the housekeeper; Ms. Wolozin, the masseuse; and the three private security guards summoned by Ms. Olsen — were fully cooperating with the authorities.
The police conducted tests on a rolled-up $20 bill found in Mr. Ledger’s apartment, but found no evidence that the bill had been used for anything improper. No illegal narcotics or alcohol was found in the apartment. Prescription sleeping pills were found near the body, but it is not known if the medication played a role in his death.
The police said they were looking to examine any surveillance videos from the apartment building and the surrounding area but were also awaiting the results of an investigation by the New York City chief medical examiner. The office conducted an autopsy early Wednesday morning but said that the results were inconclusive and that additional testing was needed.
The death of Mr. Ledger, 28, the Australian-born actor whose breakthrough role as a gay cowboy in the 2005 movie “Brokeback Mountain” earned him a nomination for an Academy Award, has attracted international attention.

This is all so tragic. I don't even know what to say about it besides that.

I can't believe that woman's first reaction was to call an Olsen. Call 911! That is a very enabler thing to do...keep things quiet like that.

The radio morning show was talking about this morning...celebs and their people are so used to keeping things hushed up with private security and doctors that they never get help. Lindsay Lohan was said to have been revived a number of times by people like that instead of seeking real help until she was arrested twice...

I can't believe that those people who attend that church are going to protest at his funeral because of a role he played in a film.

It's sick, that's when you know that no one should have complete freedom of speech. It's just urgghhh!

Some folks apparently have a lot more time on their hands than I do :p They should come on by, I'll give 'em something useful to do ;)

I feel very sad for his daughter, who probably won't have many memories of him ... at least quite a bit has been "caught on tape" for her to watch, like the interviews in this thread ...

Does anyone think that Gemma's family should NOT be commenting about this. As far as the public knew there were only rumours that they were dating. It was never confirmed by reps, no pap shots ever surfaced and now her mum still won't confirm they were more than friends so why not just say "my daughters were friends with him and our thoughts & prayers are with his family" and leave it at that. It's no one’s business if they were dating.

UPDATED: Stars, friends react to Heath Ledger's death

Actress Julia Stiles: Ledger's 10 Things I Hate About You co-star spent last night at a bar, the Bowery, a few blocks from where he died. "I am drinking away my sorrows right now," she told the Independent.

Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee: "Working with Heath was one of the purest joys of my life. He brought to the role of Ennis [Del Mar] more than any of us could have imagined."
Lee said Ledger had "a thirst for life, for love, and for truth, and a vulnerability that made everyone who knew him love him. His death is heartbreaking".

Talk show host Ellen Degeneres: The comedian took a moment at the end of her talk show on Wednesday to remember Heath Ledger in a touching and humorous tribute. Calling the actor an "amazing, amazing, talented young man," DeGeneres said: "He was a friend and we will miss him," before running from his last appearance on her show, on February 13, 2006.

this clip

Neil Armfield, who directed Ledger in the 2006 Australian drama Candy: "He was always a complex and complicated man to work with but ... just a master."

Scriptwriter Luke Davies, who wrote Candy: "This is just an awful, awful day and and awful awful loss."
"He was a very beautiful person. We got to know each other quite well on set - he just had an immediate connection with people."
"I feel so sad and just weirdly privileged to have been involved with him. What amazed me about Heath was his amazing tactile, emotional response to a script and other actors.
"He just brought a huge amount to a script - and it was just magnified on the big screen."

whole day i'm reminded on him through this song:

it's called Welcome home son by Radical face

Sleep don't visit, so I choke on sun
And the days blur into one
And the backs of my eyes hum with things I've never done

Sheets are swaying from an old clothesline
Like a row of captured ghosts over old dead grass
Was never much but we made the most
Welcome home

Ships are launching from my chest
Some have names but most do not
If you find one, please let me know what piece I've lost

Peel the scars from off my back
I don't need them anymore
You can throw them out or keep them in your mason jars
I've come home

All my nightmares escaped my head
Bar the door, please don't let them in
You were never supposed to leave
Now my head's splitting at the seams
And I don't know if I can

Here, beneath my lungs, I feel your thumbs press into my skin again

I cannot believe that. It really makes me angry. :ninja:

New pic of Michelle on People.com. Whether it's her in Sweden or NY I don't know but you would think that People mag would be a bit more sensitive and not post the photo of her. She looks understandably distraught.

You have to remember that Michelle has never courted publicity and is very shy so to have camera's shoved in her face at this time is horrible. I just want to give her a hug.

so tragic...does the NYT's article suggest that the masseuse didn't know how to perform CPR? this seems odd to me.

ET is reporting that the women called the police immediately, but i'll stick to the NYT version on this one. it is sickening how much the pop media is trying to imply illegal drug use, as if that will somehow make things more comprehensible.

You should see the paparazzi outside her Brooklyn townhouse...it's obscene! And she has no privacy cause it's right on the street...:(

I am really going to fight the temptation of looking at the picture on People.com. By looking at it, we are only feeding the paparazzi.

I just sent a email to the editor of People say this -

Take that picture of Michelle Williams arriving at the airport off People.com. She is grieving and having a camera shoved in her face is not what she needs right now. I expect this from TMZ etc but not People. You should be ashamed.

I know I sound a bit nuts but it's just so rude to post that pic.

Edit: The pics is also on TMZ  with this comment -

We're told that Michelle and Matilda went to nearby Gothenburg to board a flight to New York. Michelle's mother and sister are currently in Brooklyn and were joined there by Matilda's godmother, "Dawson's Creek" actress Busy Philipps.

Re Godfather Jake TMZ has this -

Jake Gyllenhaal has yet to be seen or heard from since the death of his close friend, Heath Ledger -- and people on the set of his new film are working hard to keep it that way.

Gyllenhaal is in New Mexico, currently filming his new movie, "Brothers." We're told there are no plans to shut down production, but Jake is very upset and doesn't want to talk to the media -- so the set has been closed to non-crew members and extra security has been hired.

Jake is the godfather to Heath's daughter, Matilda Rose.

I agree. I'm going to have to avoid looking too. I already had issues with how intrusive people are with celebrities. I already hated the excessive obsession with celebrity and how the paparazzi behave.
