^^Impact is relative, though -- domestically speaking, it is becoming much easier to get attached to a celebrity and a "fantasy" lifestyle than a political figure and their causes these days (Not particularly a good thing, of course) :( I imagine that you would not hear very much about Heath in areas of the world unfamiliar with him/his work -- but those areas do not include the US, that's all.

i understand that completely, and can only speak for myself and my experience with what other, highly educated people of all social classes are saying right now.
i just think this forum is mainly to pay respects to him and people have fans.
i don't think we need to talk about the impact of celeb culture, i think we know how that is.

For some reason this really struck a nerve with me and I'm not sure why. I never thought of him as my favorite actor, though I've seen most of his films. I guess he just seemed like a decent guy despite never knowing him. I'm quite shocked at how saddened I was by the news.

That said, the crying, the avatars and song lyrics are a bit much, no? I think it is most respectful to not pretend as if we knew what kind of person he was. All we know is he was a great actor and appeared to be a great guy.

^^Sorry, my post was not directed at you (Edited to point one above yours ;))

I don't mean to come off as rude, but I'm really confused as to why it bugs some people that others are so affected by this? If you don't get it, read past that, say what you wanna say and move on. As Faith pointed out, we live in a celebrity dominated culture, it's really a matter of opinion whether you find that good or bad. Heath Ledger may have been a celebrity but at the end of the day, he was still a person and I can't grasp people criticizing others for feeling sympathetic to those he was close to. It saddens me to see comments such as "why is this getting so much press" and why are people being so dramatic?" The point of a thread like this is not to start a debate about whether or not the world is too focused on certain issues, but for people to express their feelings. Again, how people don't fully grasp that is lost to me. :ermm:

Jssy4eva, I completely understand your point. My main issue is that he never wanted attention or courted it (whether it be good or bad attention), he seemed like he just wanted to be left alone. So for others to have these visceral reactions as if they knew him, posting paprazzi photos of his child and claiming they can 'only imagine' what Michelle must be going through - it just seems...suffice it to say, strange to me and, in fact, a further invasion upon their privacy. I'm sorry if that comes off as insensitive, as I feel it is quite the opposite.

I just think that, if anything at all, this whole thing should teach us to leave these people alone!

^Your point is very understandable as well, but I think the public shock resulting from the whole incident is just taking its toll here. It just seems that many are not sure how else to let out the surprise and confusion of what has happened. The photos at least present an positive image of how each individual remembered him, and for some that's really the only way they know how to memorialize someone so "familiar" yet...unfamiliar.

i dont think it's overboard when discussing positive aspects of such a great young hopeful actor.
it's rare that someone has that something special that people latch onto.
everyone i talked to is very upset or hurt in some way.
especially during these tough times.

Some people don't think discussing the positive aspects of a actor.. is the most important issue in the media today, Heath deserves coverage, but the media is covering him extensively because of the WAY he died, not because he is dead , ..suddenly and of unknown causes..ala Anna Nicole Smith...if he died of cancer I don't think the media would be as fascinated. I feel sorriest for his family who loved him before the fame, he is truly more then good acting to them, I don't think the constant coverage is helping them.

...
Martin Luther King, Presidents, Ghandi deaths meant more to SOME people because these people were making the world a better place or they were important leaders etc..

Like I said before I enjoy talking about him on a board, but if others are tried of the coverage ..I understand them also.

people say that media attention is an inescapable accessory to the celebrity lifestyle, that it's just something that the famous have to deal with, fair enough...but when it crosses the line of basic human decency it is so utterly repulsive and dispicable. It made me so sick to see that media outlets were showing footage of the body bag and as quick as they did. There seems to be no moral code; and this should just be instinctive moral code.

The media should concentrate on celebrating the life of an amazing actor and person instead of speculating over his death.

My heart goes out to his family, Michelle and his beautiful daughter.

Thank you for blessing us with your extraordinary talent. Rest In Peace Heath.

This is from the new york post. I don't know how accurate it is, but it "could" explain a whole lot.

January 24, 2008 -- The masseuse who discovered Heath Ledger's body made two frantic calls to his latest squeeze, actress Mary-Kate Olsen, before dialing 911 for help, police revealed yesterday.
MORE: Star's Tragic Timeline
"Heath is unconscious. I don't know what to do!" Diane Lee Wolozin screamed in her first call to Olsen on Tuesday.
"I'm sending my private security there," the actress replied.
Moments later - after finding the body of the "Brokeback Mountain" star cold to the touch - Wolozin, 40, made another panicked call. "I think he may be dead. I'm calling 911!" she said. "I already have people coming over," Olsen replied.
At no time did the star of "Full House" advise Wolozin to call 911, but detectives believe Ledger, 28, was already dead.
They suspect he died about 1 p.m., about two hours earlier. That was soon after housekeeper Teresa Solomon walked into his bedroom and saw him lying on his stomach with the covers up to his shoulders. He was snoring, she said.
"Detectives who saw the body believe he had been dead for some time due to lividity," a police official said, referring to the way blood settles after a person dies. Wolozin's shocking phone calls to Olsen were revealed as Ledger's ex, actress Michelle Williams, returned to her Brooklyn home with their 2-year-old daughter, Matilda - looking crushed after a trans-Atlantic flight from a movie shoot in Sweden. Cops said the race against death began at 12:30 p.m., when Solomon, 56, who came once a week, let herself into the Broome Street apartment - furnished mostly with skateboards - with her key. The bedroom door was closed, but Solomon said it was not unusual for her to have no contact with Ledger while she puttered about. At 1 p.m., she said, she went into the bedroom to change a light bulb in the adjoining bathroom. She heard the actor snoring. "The last time I saw him he was lying down on his face," Solomon told The Post. "I didn't think anything was wrong. I thought he was sleeping." She said she was devastated to learn that the actor could have been dead as she worked. "I am still shaking. I can't sleep," she said in an exclusive interview. There was a note on the refrigerator that said Wolozin would be coming for a 3 p.m. appointment, and at 2:45 p.m., the masseuse arrived.

She and Solomon chatted and, at about 3:10 p.m. - when Ledger had not come out of his bedroom - Wolozin called his cellphone. No reply. Then she knocked on the door. Still no reply. Wolozin went inside and saw the actor face down on the bed, the sheets up to his shoulders, police said.
Not thinking anything was wrong, she set up her massage table and tried to wake him, shaking him and calling, "Heath! Heath!" He didn't move. Using a number programmed into Ledger's cell, a nervous Wolozin called the 21-year-old Olsen - whom law enforcement sources said was dating Ledger - in California. The diminutive star said she would send her security guards there. A law-enforcement source said the masseuse called Mary-Kate because "she didn't want a media circus." She also said, without explaining, that there was a "mutual relationship" between her, Mary-Kate and the Australian-born actor. Wolozin tied to rouse Ledger again. This time, she shuddered. His body was cold. Fearing the worst, she called Mary-Kate again and screamed, "I think he's dead!" police said Wolozin told her she would call 911 and, at 3:26 p.m., she made the call on Ledger's cellphone. An operator told her how to perform CPR.
At 3:33 p.m., paramedics arrived and moved Ledger from the bed to the floor to make it easier to revive him.
As they tried to save his life, Mary-Kate's rent-a-cops showed up. At 3:36 p.m., Ledger was pronounced dead.
Cops found bottles of six different pills - two for anxiety, two for insomnia and two for pain in his bedroom and bathroom. Ledger had prescriptions for all of them, some issued in Europe. Police also found a rolled-up $20 bill on the floor near the bed. Rolled-up bills are often used to snort coke or other drugs, but a toxicology test found no drugs on the bill.
There was no evidence of alcohol use, and no illegal drugs were found. An autopsy conducted yesterday was inconclusive and further tests were ordered. The results will take 10 to 14 days. Williams lives in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn. Actress Busy Philipps, who starred with her in the TV series "Dawson's Creek" and is her daughter's godmother, came by to be with Williams' mother, Carla. Actress Keri Russell, who starred in "Felicity" and lives nearby, walked past the house and left her card with a cop.

the la weekend event if any at all should be the one they 'bombard' and some of hollywood should attend imo. i think he should be allowed to RIP for his daughter and familys sake.

I think he should have his funeral in Perth, away from those homophobes christian freaks. I can't beleive they would do that, its digusting!
