i hadn't cried yet.
and then i read what his family published.

SO many people have said that its 'weird' to cry over someone i never knew. And yet he was a personal hero, an artist, an inspiration.

Just because i never met him doesn't mean he didn't reach out and touch my heart in some unspoken way.

i am quite surprised that his family published such private, intimate thoughts . .
they struck me as very private, like heath . . so i am shocked that they feel comfortable with the whole world reading their personal reflections so soon after this has all happened
in any case, they are beautiful words . . it breaks my heart to read

i loved his dad's comment about the chess games . .

I completely agree - I felt inappropriate just reading it :( I don't know why they would publish such personal grief.

it's a normal thing in my country when person dies, you put few nice words in the newspapers about him/her. it's just custom.

^ True. Here in the local paper they talk of what the person did for a living, their intrests and surviving family.
If you pay for the spot you can write your own. Some do really lovely poems.

Isn't odd people are feeling it's too much info....
when all this info we shouldn't know is on the news 24/7?...

this is soooo
sweet.

i just feel like that was a really respectful thing to say

i agree. it's an obituary - families often share thoughts and feelings about their departed loved one.

your last point was spot on brokenenglish.

haven't seen this posted:

Mary-Kate Olsen has just issued the following statement in the wake of Heath Ledger's death:

"Heath was a friend. His death is a tragic loss. My thoughts are with his family during this very difficult time."
she sounds so sincere...

Compared to his family, yeah, not so much. I assume you're being sarcastic, but then you cannot judge 'character' or 'tone' on internet, so I apologize if you're not. But maybe she feels like keeping her feelings and memories to herself, and being as brief as possible with any mention of it to the media. I dont fault her for that.

letthemeatcake, it was sarcasm.
sorry about that

I was trying to work the punctuation of my statment to express that, but realized it's nearly impossible online.

It's upsetting to read a statement like that especially after the person who found Heath chose to call her first indicating, to me at least, that they had a stronger relationship than they led people to believe. Her opinions are absolutely her own and she didn't have to say anything to begin with but to issue a statement pretending to care and have it come out so unsubstantial and inane is pretty disrespectful.

i understand...it is done here in my country too..
i suppose i was commenting more on the personal nature and the extent of the comments...more than just 'a few' words...
it surprised me..because they seem like very private people...
but as i said, they were beautiful words...

and i'm sure his family feel that perth is home and is their community..
and perhaps that contributed to them feeling secure enough to publish such personal grief...
a lot of friends and extended family will be reading the local newspaper...as well as childhood friends of heath's i'm sure...

strange that we live in a time where comments in a local paper end up all over the internet and thus all over the world..
but i guess you take the good with the bad...

I am sorry but this is bordering on nutso. The fourteen different causes of death. The family releasing personal feelings. Gemma Ward officiating the funeral. Mary Kate Olsen in the mix, Daniel Day Lewis mouthing off and joining in talking about someone he doesn't know... I think we are so used to public grief after the Diana freak show that we no longer realise how odd this is. I am not condemning people for feeling bad because actors are personal. I feel undescribably devastated about Brad Renfro so I know how people feel. BUT I am surprised the celebrities and family are partaking in that public grief. Maybe you just want everyone to validate your son and you want to join in the martyr trip if you are another actor? I don't know.

And you know what is the weirdest thing of all? The fact that the statement that made most sense and touched me the most was Britney Spears speaking from the totally wacked out place she is in - 'He hasn't left. Nobody ever really does'. Maybe I am crazy. Or maybe she is speaking a lot of truth because SHE is crazy.

I don't think I would call that mouthing off.
I think he was genuinely grief stricken at the moment and had to express it.
I think he realizes that now a days, in Hollywood, real true actors are few and far between and they lost one of the best.
I bet he was touched by some of Heath's work. Like you with Brad.

As far as his family I don't know their reasoning.
Maybe they wanted to put good words out there since there is so much crap floating around....
Their words touched me and I am glad they did.

As far as MK and Gemma .....

And I will have to worry about you if keep thinking Brit makes sense.:innocent:
( though in this case she does imo as well....
but I bet she doesn't even realize that was almost profound- as profound as she can get)

It's the age of the internet.
Everything is public. Death and even grief.

I'm in New York City right now, hopefully when I go to Soho I'll be around to put some flowers by the apartment

I don't think it's weird that the family is speaking up, even if they are private. They realize how many people Heath has touched, so , it's natural.
It's only human to feel the responsibility, so we can all have closure in our own "weird" way.
Why can't we just remember him for why he touched us, instead of this constant bickering.
It's so annoying and puts such a bad taste in my life about the dark side of humans.

Yeah, it's quite normal. I kinda feel it's sort of disrespectful if you don't put words in the paper. If their son wasn't famous I'm sure they would've still done exactly the same thing, so just because he's famous I don't see why the family should refrain from doing the normal things that a family does to respect, mourn, and pay tribute to their son.
