HIGH SOCIETY
The city in the '70s had Lauren, Bianca, and Marisa, who knew everyone, went everywhere, and looked fabulous doing so. These days Manhattan is still a girls' club but its members aren't just sitting pretty—they're producing films, launching fashion lines, and making New York a more beautiful place one face at a time

Derek Blasberg We’re referencing New York in the 1970s here: What about that era did you like?

Rachel Roy I’m in love with the 70's, I grew up watching hippie chic women with long frizzy hair and high waisted dark denim and men's style blouses tucked in for the first decade of my life.

DB As a fashion designer, is this an era that you have mined for inspiration in the past?

RR My collections are always influenced by the 1970's. Sometimes it’s by the way of the 1940's, but I always have a goal of a relaxed glamour that the women in the 1970's owned.

DB Which 70s icon would you most likely identify with?
R
R I try to channel many of those strong, sexy, intelligent women: Bianca [Jagger] for her dark effortless sexiness, Brooke [Shields] for her eyebrows, Farrah [Fawcett] for the voice and her hair, Diana [Ross] for her body and her outfits, and DVF for her EVERYTHING.

DB What did you pick up about what was happening on the East Coast when you were growing up?

RR I have to admit I was fairly sheltered by a very strict father while growing up in Northern California, which meant my knowledge of the outside world came through either Vogue, which I collected from an early age, or old movies. The East Coast to me meant Audrey Hepburn prancing around town breaking men's hearts in a black dress fit to perfection, and Ali McGraw in a beret with her all American glam. While I grew up in around chic tree hugging hippies, I longed for the elegance and tradition that I imagined New York City had waiting for me.

DB What's your favorite thing about New York City?

RR It’s the only city you can move to and become who ever it is you want to be, if you are willing to work really hard, your dreams can come true in this crazy brilliant beautiful historic and sometimes toxic city. Even when I lived in New Jersey after college, because I couldn’t afford to live in the city 10 years ago, I drove to NYC when I was in labor with my daughter because I wanted her to have New York City on her birth certificate.

I love the last part about driving to NYC! I planned to do that also with my pregnancy, but it didn't work out that way. Oh well!^_^
