Racial Diversity In Modeling

I think there were a couple of light skinned/mixed girls, but with the lighting and the makeup I couldn't even tell for sure.

Horrible, horrible. It's like every time we see a step forward, five backwards comes next.

If there were mixed girls in Prada, I really couldn't tell. The show was so white I stopped watching the live stream after finally seeing Lineisy.

^ There was Barbara Valente and Yasmin Wijnaldum. I'm pretty sure both of them are mixed. Not sure about Nirvana Naves' ethnic background, and people don't seem to consider Mica as an MOC, so you have, at the very most, 7 MOC out of 47. I'm not pleasef in the slightest about those statistics.

^ I'm curious about her background. But as you mentioned I'm sure she has black heritage.

Nirvana is Dutch/Guyanese, so I would assume she has some black heritage.

I guess I didn't see the diversity because there were MOC at the show but none that came across blatant in terms of African heritage.

Glad to see Sora and Shin Hyun there, more than last year with just Dylan.

What do we want in terms of racial diversity?

Do we want the casting directors to say, "This show needs more models of color. Therefore, regardless of measurements, walk, personality, attitude, facial features, aesthetics, we are going to cast her based on her skin color."

Is that what we want? I'm legitimately asking this question, no sarcasm intended.

Frankly I'd like to see more models of color on the runway (at least in NYC, one of THE most diversely populated cities in the world) other than white ones. Consistently. This season was good but with the diversity track record, there's no telling what Fall 2016 will bring.

The merit argument is a weak one. There are TONS of ethnic models who fit the mold but have the wrong skin color. They have the right measurements, the right walk, the right personality, the right attitude, facial features AND aesthetics. But if one does not find beauty in color none of that will matter.

Honestly, I can't say I care that much anymore. It will never change. Diversity is hot for a season or for appropriation and then it isn't.

Now when I shop I pay attention to the designers I give my money to.

This question is so stupid and offensive. We want casting directors to cast the MOC that should be in their shows because they fit the criteria and fit the feeling/mood of a show. There are hundereds of different MOC out there.... often more suitable for a show than the white girls who get walk.

^I 100% agree with you. I asked this question because I feel like some people want MOC on the runways just for the sake of diversity, like it's some sort of formula. And if the formula isn't met, then it's automatically racist.

I agree with you, though. For example, Prada S/S 16 was pretty whitewashed. Tami, Aya, Issa (the list goes on) should've been cast. They were perfect for the show. Yet they weren't. Why not? I would love to know.

That's what they're doing already. They're saying "Hey, this cast is too white and people are gonna eat us alive if we send it down that way, so we need a few ethnic girls here. But not too much. Let's cast 1-2 hot MOCs other people are casting and there we go, my job here is done." And there we have it.

^Right, exactly. But what I don't want is for them to say, "Hey, they're still mad about all the white models. Put more models of color in the show. How many did you put in? 10-15? That's a good amount, I think. Hopefully they won't be mad anymore. Let's keep doing that just so people don't burn down our houses."

I don't want MOC put in shows for the sake of diversity, no matter how many are put in the show. I want MOC to be put in shows because they matter and because they are truly beautiful. I want this for all models.

Does this make sense? I know this is what most people are after as well, and I don't think it always comes across this way. At least to me it doesn't.

Basically, we need an overhaul of casting directors and a new mindset regarding diversity.

What gets me is the impact on the girls...Sharam Diniz posted the following on Instagram, after Viola Davis won her Emmy. Sometimes I forget that as frustrated as we are watching, these girls deal with it every day :(

This was the message written alongside (translated through Google from Portuguese)
After seeing the # Emmys2015 and heard the speech as spoken and talked of #ViolaDavis today on social networks (and speech !!! Very well articulated and based) came to the conclusion that the lack of opportunity is any area there women and / or men even color. From television to magazines. How many color models exist and people with decision power continue to use the same white models constantly? Ahh I forgot the Black models have to be perfect from head to toe, and the white can be OK, because a fotoshop retouching solves. And when the first Black Women is that area is, wins a prize and speaks well ... Everyone comments and publish on your social networks. Until when?! Oh World SAD! Cansaaada. #Merdice

Is Lindsey Montero the token "New" black model at all the big shows now? It used to be Aya before that Malika. I don't understand casting directors sometimes.

Isn't it like this every season? Prada for example, each time has the black it girl of the season but I can't remember one black model who walked consistently for them.

Every season it's a new ethnic girl who walks all the shows, and then gets replaced the next season

Yes, she definitely is. But browsing through photos of runway shows, Lineisy is very light skinned, like Binx (who's biracial). It wasn't that obvious in the Teen Vogue cover with Aya (who I think it either also biracial, or 1/4 white) and Imaan. Lineisy is def the lightest out of the women mentioned here, which is also important.
