Really good, rich moisturizers?

Oh, this thread is fantastic - I've had really dry skin recently on my chin and my jawline, so I'm definately going to check out some of these suggestions :flower:

i don't get dry areas, just general tightness and dryness. the tightness is what bothers me.
i'm really happy with the way the shea butter is working, with the kiehls layered on top. i would love to try some of these other creams that posters are recommending, but i keep spending money on products that aren't working and it's frustrating to have these unused tubs lying around.

Thankfully, my skin doesn't get too horribly dry. But I have medium-to-dry skin. A lot of these suggestions are great... but unfortunately, my wallet isn't big enough for some of the nicer lotions mentioned... :(

but you can get really useful ingredient info here and find alternative brands that are less expensive, with the same ingredients. i am amazed that something like shea butter does not clog my pores, but i am smearing it around my eyes, on my cheeks, around my mouth. i was about to buy la mer, and perhaps that stuff is still magic, and maybe some day i'll find out, but for now, shea totally took care of my prob.

And on the topic of good moisturizers... has anybody tried Nivea Simply Glowing? Is that nourishing, and does your skin really... glow? I want a moisturizer that adds a hint of glow to my face, and am curious if this is worth the buy.

You're lucky - I literally get skin flaking off sometimes... not very nice

I'm also the same as you... spending lots of money on products that don't work. So I always worry when buying something new  I guess I just have to keep looking for the 'perfect product' though

Hey guys--

I just wanted to add that the tight-tight-tight some were talking about feeling is due to the skin being dehydrated- lacking H20.

Dehydrated skin does not need the richest products, it needs water! Look for a product with a lot of humectants in it- they bind water molecules.

Sodium PCA, Sodium hyaluronate, phospholipids, sorbitol, panthenol, glycerine, etc. I am sure you can google "humectant" to find a lot more.

Obviously, drinking at least 8 8oz glasses of water a day is rec., too.

Flaky skin, however, needs more oil, so the rich, luxe creams and butters are great for this type of dryness. I'd also rec. lots of wtare to keep the skin hydrated ^_^

Hope this helps some of you-- and I am a NY licensed esthetician:flower:

Cetaphil moisturizer works well for me. I only use it once a day. It's good for your skin too.

you are the best! so great to have professional input. thank you!

i would have replied sooner, but i actually got up and drank a glass of water after reading your post.

does shea butter count as a natural humectant by any chance?

and will a humidifier help those of us who are tight tight tight?

check with our resident expert :D
but i would say exfoliate and then slather.
it is so disappointing when a new product is not the solution. hopefully we can all learn a little here to help make our purchases more productive. i really hate that i have to use $$ face cream as a hand cream now, just so i don't waste it entirely.

:P

Shea butter is not a humectant. It is an emollient- a fat. Since water and oil do not mix, it seals in the moisture your skin already has- but does not provide additional moisture. It is good for flaking and peeling skin though as oil is what it needs.

Since you do have access to a Sephora, I'd rec. that you go check out some products in person. Maybe a hyaluronic serum? Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in our skin and joints and is one of the most powerful humectants in the skincare market. Sephora sells Cellex-C who make a serum called Hyda 5 that is supposed to be good.

Again, look for products with some of the ingredients I mentioned above and a humidifer would be a gret addition as humectansts attact water from the air to hydrate your skin.

Keep drinking that H20, too:wink:

Ohmygod, I hadn't been here for a while, I didn't realize this thread got so big!

Okay on the Simply Glowing moisturizer....it's so creamy and very very moisturizing, but it leaves shimmer on your face, which I hate. I might be hypersensitive to it though, I have a strong aversion to shimmer. :innocent: But I use it at night just because it's so creamy.

Today at Origins I bought the Never Say Dry moisturizer, and it's supposed to be for people with super dry skin. Anyone tried this so far? At first I had to reapply it a LOT but then I realized I should probably warm it in my hands a bit, and then it worked great. It's really thick, almost like a butter! I'll see how my skin looks with it while I'm in Mexico, I packed it for the week.

What about the Doctor Hauscka (whatever it is) Rose Cream? I read good reviews on it and it looked really good....does it make you glowy?

i may have missed this but did anyone give opinions on Aveda's hydrating lotion? now that the weather is getting cooler it's really helped my face remain hydrated. but it can feel oily if you use too much.

Dear John by Benefit.....I love it. Its pretty rich, I think. And it absorbs well.

Gruveechik, thank you so much for all the important information!!

Now I know why the lanolin-based products weren't working for me. You've been a great help. BIG karma. :flower:

By the way, as you say, I also use grapeseed oil as a cleanser...really gentle, moisturizing, nourishing, effective and cheap...what more could a girl want! :P

My dry skin was really awful, it looked dull and I had to apply a TON of moisturizer to get it fully hydrated.
Now I use this Khiel's Creme d'Elegance Repairateur moisturizer, and it's amazing. My skin looks moist, feels really hydrated, and is more even toned! If anyone has super SUPER dry skin, I would really reccomend it!

bought it, tried it - total waste.

i reccomend weleda skin food. its really thick but rubs right into the skin and in the morning your face looks fresh and pink! my boyfriend uses it on the patches of dry skin caused by acne medication and we can always tell where he's applied the cream! you can get it in health food stores

For a very very dry skin Eight Hour Cream (Elizabeth Arden) is great, it smells terrible, but if you apply while you are sleeping the next day your skin looks fantastic!

I also love nivea (blue tin) and Dr Hauscka Rose Cream
