Ricky Martin Comes Out of the Closet

he did a vh1 special where he claimed rebecca de alba (a famous model from mexico - she modelled for bulgari, avon etc.) was his GF. she was also interviewed.

I don't remember that particular event, but things like this make me believe most of the blind items which talk about A listers in Hollywood being gay.

Aww I wish he would have been comfortable enough to come out before, but yay to him.

I felt like it was a self-fulling prophecy-ish. What with so many people thinking he was gay right off the bat, Ricky might've been asking, "Am I gay?"

how "proud" can he be given he's been famous in the west for ten odd years?

Great for him.

I know for years he has been rumored but I'm glad he came out when he felt ready to.

People need to understand it's not easy telling anyone that you are gay or bi, especially in the industry he is in.

I have nothing but respect and support for him.

Ever occur to you that he wasn't ready to come out with that?

Sexuality isn't always an easy thing to accept within yourself.

I'm bisexual and had that problem as well.

You feel as if you did something wrong or let your parents down.

Also, the pressure can be immense.

I'm glad he finally had the courage to come out.

There are many men and women that have been gay/bi/les all their lives but were too afraid to speak up.

That was like the worst kept secret for a long time.

Anderson Cooper, you're up next.

^ I think many already know he is.

He probably won't come out, since it could affect his views.

la vida loca ricky! i guess she did not bang THAT good? LOL
only kidding i knew it when he was at his peak and we were all clubbing together

what a shocker!

but seriously, celebrity or not, no one should have to make statements about their sexuality. Sigh

Can someone explain to me how everyone knew he was gay? I don't know much about him but EVERYONE on all the gossip websites seem to think it's plain as day that he was gay! How is that?

^I don't know about other people but I always had a hunch (since the Livin' La Vida Loca days) and it was confirmed to me the day he announced he was the father of two sons via surrogate mother. I mean, would a heterosexual man be bothered to have kids without a wife? I don't think so. :ermm:

Anyway, good for him. I'm always happy when celebrities come out of the closet because it helps other people who are still afraid to be true to themselves.

mostly cause of the way he talks/moves, having kids using a surrogate mother was the last confirmation needed without him talking about it...
Before he was famous in USA he did interviews in spanish that gave the vibe that he was gay, when tv hosts asked him about girls he always dodged the questions and stuff like that...
Also in my country (Argentina) there were rumours that he was dating a gay local tv host, back in 1995.

Duuuuuuuh!!!!

I think nobody is obliged to speak his/her sexuality nowadays.

But whith this stars that started so young, even as kids as in RM´s case sometimes it was their agents that created an aura or an image of heterosexuality for them as a marketing device. That imposed image can become a trap, because they sort of accepted and contributed semi-voluntarily to build an image of heterosexuality in their early days.
In those cases speaking out one´s true choices can be liberating, because you don´t have to be feeding that old cliche nobody bought anyways....

He was rumored to be gay for YEARS before he officially came out. American audiences may only have gotten to know him during his General Hospital days and his "Livin la vida loca" days in the late 90s/early 2000s, but he was well-known in Latin America long before that. And...he was rumored to be gay since like the early 90s. He was the star of a Mexican soap opera in 1991, and even then, people already suspected that he was gay.

So his "coming out" was really just a confirmation of an officially unspoken truth.

i don't believe there exists one 100% heterosexual man who would not simply out-and-out deny being gay. for YEARS ricky martin would take the "i'm not answering that questions" tack which SO MANY OF US understood as a tacit "coming out" of sorts. the sexual exploits of heterosexual/heteronormative celebrities add to their cachet -- witness colin farrell, et al -- not detract so when a star shies away from such an easy source of publicity, it raises questions.
