Rihanna

When it comes to hair...I feel like if a person is striking enough, talented enough..it does matter if you wear the same style as everyone else...You will stand out regardless..I hope it doesn't take hairstyles to make a person unique...That's the problem in the music industry today, it's all about trying to stand out style wise, but the music is getting worse and creativity is dying.

at the same time its a business. the companies are only going to put out what sells which is mindless, no-depth, poppy songs. Looks also play a role like it or not. People are drawn to things they can relate too.

also im faithful that music is getting better than say five years ago. We have Feist, M.I.A., and other alternatives getting commercial recognition and we have the likes of Lady Gaga who's artistically and musically committed being very influential in the industry. Even Rihanna put out a less commercial album out. I think the standards are different now than say the days of J.Lo, Pussycat Dolls, and even Britney. Its getting back to artistry but its challenging to be commercially viable and make quality music.

Look at Taylor Swift..bland style, bland hair....She is going to get more endorsements/sell more records then say Lady Gaga.. ...despite everything I think that if a person wants to have long career..they will have to bring more to the table then outrageous clothes and hair...your music has to be exceptional.Michael Jackson and Prince may had unique style but they had the great music to match it...these artist of today don't..Iam not impressed with Gaga music at All, she isn't even as good as Madonna in the 80's.Outrageous Clothes and Hair are not going to make you a respected, music legend is all Iam saying.:DIf Rihanna wants to change her style fine, but the most important thing, she should do is try to make creative and interesting music.

Maybe Rihanna just changes her hair because SHE WANTS TO. Nothing more, nothing less.
I don't think she's counting on her haircut to make her feel unique or special or validated.

Every artist has a different demographic and there is a reason why two opposites like Taylor and Gaga can be both successful. Taylor is wholesome and middle america,, which is huge, loves wholesome - that is also the same reason romantic comedies work by the way. Gaga is visually extravagant and there are those who like her for that. Also, to you Rihanna might not be an icon or legend to you but that is a personal thing regardless of what the media dictates.

What Im trying to say is that you may not value looks as much as music quality but other people do.

wow its gotten catty in here.

this is a fashion forum though, not music talent, so of course her every change with hair styles and personal clothing etc is going to be liked or despised.

Like her red 'hair'.. if u can call it that.. is disgusting.

sure it doesnt make her less of a great artist, but again, this thread isnt about that.

Alot of people say Rihanna can't sing and has not stage presence, that she is only clothes and hairstyles(not my opinion)...they say She sells alot of music, but some people don't considered her very talented......I think most artist out there want to be considered an icon with great music over people admiring their clothes....Alot of people are complain that looks are becoming more important then Talent in the industry....It's not just me...I value good music over what the artist looks like or what they are wearing..because I like the sound better then the sight when it comes to music...IMO.We all have different opinions on the topic...Which is good.

Iam through with this topic:D

To tell you the truth I NEED my singers to have an intriguing look no matter what that is (subdued or OTT). I also value good music but for me music is a form of escape and the artist has to be apart of that visually.

It's like fashion magazines. I want to see models with out of this world beauty on the covers and in the eds/ads. Not the average and everyday.

*steps off of soapbox*

not to add fuel to the fire but....I definitely don't come to this thread because I like her music :innocent:
her sense of style (or fabulous stylist should I say) is what intrigues me the most.

she has had some club music type of songs that I have like tho - Please Don't Stop the Music, S.O.S., and Rudeboy are all fun to dance to - other than that, most of her other songs are pretty bad. that said, I think she might have been trying harder on this last album, it just wasn't executed very well...

This day in age it's not just about one thing over the other but the package as a whole- music, looks & personality. Rihanna isn't the best singer but she isn't horrible either- her voice stands out in a sea full of pop tarts. Adding on to that with her last release she became more involved in it's process and it payed off- more critically http://www.metacritic.com/music/artists/rihanna/ratedr?q=Rated R than commercially though she did garner a #1 (Rude Boy) and 2 Top 10 Hits (RR/Hard).

I love that Rihanna continues to change up her look- it seems to be something that she merely enjoys doing. Not that long ago I did view Rihanna as a bit try hard but since Rated R came out she is finally owning her 'swag'. B)

^^i agree with the pants comment. i dont understand them. its all confusing to me:huh:

cool sunglasses - nice touch of leopard. they're understated in comparison with the rest of her outfit

unfortunately the red still isn't working its too bright and would only work for someone extra pale wish it was slightly darker than that
