Roberto Cavalli F/W 2008.09 Milan

I'm not keen on this collection.
I agree his best collection is F/W 06!

I love Cavalli for some reason and he isn't exactly my aesthetic. He's garish and opulent and not afraid to look extravegant when minimalism is in. His collections allways make me think of an itallian mistress of some rich buissnessman.

I hate to keep banging on about this, but minimalism isn't considered 'in' in Europe (or at least, not in the UK) anymore and hasn't been for quite a while.

To give an idea of what is considered 'in' in Britain, British Vogue's round-up of the S/S '08 trends are here:

As you can see, there is no mention of minimalism and I haven't checked, but I very much doubt that there is any in Italian Vogue's round-up, either.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that this continued flogging of minimalism is just a US (and particularly, an NY) thing.

I noticed that the US seemed to take a lot longer to embrace minimalism in the late '90s and early '00s; so perhaps that explains why it is taking much longer to fade away again?

My point is that fashion isn't truly global (yet!), so to say that a designer is going against the grain, just because they are going against the grain in a country (and a continent) other than their own is somewhat inaccurate. :)

Nothing will beat F/W 06/07 for me... He seamlessly blended glamour and sex with a rich sense of worldliness and sophistication in that collection.

He seems a little lost lately, as if he feels the need to be something he is not, something more esoteric. There will always be a need for sexy clothes, there lies a vixen in every woman. He just needs to strike that right balance again because most of this is just plain dowdy.

ITA. He does seem lost - I think due to the continual bashing he used to get (and somewhat bizarrely [considering his recent output], continues to get) on here and elsewhere, for producing sexy designs.

A/W '06 - '07 was, by far, my favourite Cavalli collection (so wonderfully rich and opulent [minus the real fur]!) and in fact, one of my favourite collections ever and it's a great shame that this doesn't hit the spot in quite the same way.

He should do a collection of just corsets and skirts/pants.

This is quite whimsical ... that's the word that kept popping into my mind--not Cavalli, "whimsical."
