Searching for My Perfect Fashion Career - HELP!!

Retail is about all that is available on weekends on a regular basis. The business people (buyers, magazines, etc.) work during the week most of the time. Not to say they don't work on weekends ... but that is not their regularily scheduled hours.

I don't know if it's just me freaking out or what not, but I've been getting really scared about having a future in the design industry. I mean, I go to a fashion school where I know I will get many different opportunities, but just the way things are going right now in the economy and with the job rate I just feel as if having a job outside of the industry would be more secure. I'm not talking about just any job though, but I just feel that it may not be too late for me to back out of school and go and study something else, and become something else like a doctor or go into law because I just feel it's more safer of a path. I love fashion and I always felt like I'd do it just because I loved it, but now as I'm getting older I just feel like my mind has changed about things, and that sometimes I have to be more aware of my future than just get carried away with my passion.
but I dunno, I'm just very confused these days....

What about a career in web development/designing consulting for fashion companies? Example efashionsolutions does anyone know anything about this company?

I couldhave sworn theres another company out there like them I cannot remember the name?
I tried looking for more companies like this online that focus on the fashion industry like they do, but I could not find any? Do they even have any competitors at all? I know its an ecommerce business but I was looking for competitors in the industry that they specifically cater to?

Does anyone know anything about this business?

I am just as confused as the next person about pursuing a fashion career. Especially since I decided to toss my 1st original, original goal anyway.

Thanks

C Devin it sounds like marketing to me.. business..
they write about a business talent working side by side with a design talent
...only helps if you have experienced working with many different designers, can understand different personalities...

fashiongirl
by design consultancy do you mean only for web design?

gius. I guess I mean web solutions firm? I mean, when I looked at their web sites I see Just like outerboxdesign.com. I guess they create online stores for them. According to efashionsolutions website. They create websites, inventory, photography, shipping, e-marketing, customer service, order processing etc...

I took a look at outerboxdesigns.com their services are web design, web development, web marketing, online store development content management, customer website programming, brochure, presentation development, flash design and development, search engine optimization etc... I don't feel like typing the rest but I am sure that you see where I am going with this lol.

I just got this information from their websites.

These are the only two web design solutions firms I know of.

So I guess they do like web solutions for other companies.

know anything about working for these companies etc?

Thanks

i couldn't see anything different with being someone who's taken studies in information technology / computer science, even marketing.. and then just decided to target specifically fashion companies who require the service...

Headhunters / Recruiters

Does anyone know of any reputable fashion industry headhunters or recruiting agencies? I'm interested in whether my skills would place me in well in the industry, but don't have enough knowledge about the industry to determine this on my own.

Do you think there is a demand for advertising for agencies or like clothing companies like for example American Apparel, because I want to for sure do advertising, but what I want most is to do it in the fashion industry.

Try 24/7. I know they do some great placements.

well if you want to do that you would be a freelance stylist - a stylist puts outfits together, if you are lucky to have clients in different areas of the country and world. or you could just work for a magazine and sometimes fly to different areas of the cournty/ world for fashion shoots on location.

or you could be a diplomat^_^:P

this is the job i definitely want to do...i love experimenting with clothes, and i get really inspired when i see people down the streets mix matching. I think I want to be a fashion magazine stylist...but i also want to be a junior editor, cos i like to work behind the scenes, like at runway shows, but i know that's going to be a TOUGH job and a competitive job. aye, i really don't know now.

i have two MAJOR passions in my life: fashion and travel.
may i please have assistance or advice on how to find a career that requires both please?!?!?

thanks so much

trend forecasting is one

Even designers can travel. Especially for trade shows, fashion weeks, etc

Even fashion photographers, stylists and makeup artists travel ... when they get "big" enough to have clients pay to move them to shoots. Of course, that's probably only the top 1%.

i just recently got hired by 24/7 to work for Lacoste as the visual merchandiser its a great program!....i just graduated in fashion merchandising with a minor in business and am currently doing the Lacoste Visual Merchandiser but am looking for more because that it only part time....does anyone have any ideas?? i was thinking grad school but i dont know if thats a waste of my time!

There are 2 kinds of mercahndising in fashion and they are very different from each other.

There is Visual Merchandising ... which is about setting up store windows and in store displays. It is about making displays that attract customers and sell merchandise.

And then regular Merchandising (fashion or otherwise) which is all about the business behind retail stores. It requires a lot of math, statistics, flow charts, analysis. It is all about planning what and how much inventory to stock and to restock, getting the numbers right, carrying the right mercahndise that will actually sell. And it can be about space planning on the sales floor of the stores, too. The goal is to make a profit for the store and not to have a bunch of merchandise that does not sell. The head of merchandising is part of the management team and usually is over the Visual Merchandising Dept. and the Buyers, too.

We have a thread on each of these careers ... just do an advanced search, search by thread titles in this Careers forum.
