Serge Gainsbourg

walrus, do you know what's going on in the first video of la javanaise?.
it's obviously a very emotional performance, I assume it's a tribute for him but I want to know if there's more behind it?.

Oh...watching Jane brought tears to my eyes...what love... :o

I steeped myself in Serge growing up...an integral part of my formative years, fortunately or unfortunately...what a cheeseball he is:rolleyes::P ...nevertheless he's got this sincere, earnest quality you just gotta love......and quite timeless too, I never seem to tire of his music.

Yes, I like.

And oh-ho, I love all the duets :hearts:

Haven't heard much of him yet though, anybody has something to recommend?

I re-edited/translated some info I found on the performance (from various wiki pages:(

On March 3rd 1990, Paradis was hailed as the "Best New French Actress" at the "César" awards. In the course of the award ceremony Paradis took to the stage amidst general applause to perform Serge Gainsbourg’sclassic "La javanaise" with Patrick Bruel and Michel Sardou. Gainsbourg, present in the audience that night, was greatly impressed.

I can't believe I never saw this thread. I jus LOVE Serge. He's the best!

adding to my initial comment,i've really come to appreciate and adore that dynamic between he and jane birkin. as a couple there was such a passion between them and it really translated into the music.

they're all from d'autres nouvelles des etoiles and were uploaded by myfairjoker... i bought it a couple of weeks ago and when i have time i think i'll upload some interesting videos that haven't been uploaded by anyone yet, like portraits croisés, which is just serge and jane talking about him, and some other interviews...

I really discovered Serge through overhearing Bonnie et Clyde, which is still probably my favorite song. But I find myself often listening to Le poinconneur des Lilas and Histoire de Melody Nelson.

I used to live by the Montparnasse cemetery and saw his grave there. So many people leave little things on it. It was strange to see it. I thought it would be grander or bigger somehow. It made it all seem more human.

^histoire is my favourite as well. perhaps his most experimental in terms of production. jane and serge would be my second.

i really like "Du chant à la une!" and "Serge Gainsbourg n°4"... very very good
