that is so adorable francesca! your little niece is very lucky and will be uber chic. B) :D

I've been molesting a manual-converted-into-electric singer for two weeks now and I think maybe I'm ready to try it out with a needle.

Fetus steps, people!

francesca, what a gorgeous skirt, and very impressive for your first project!:woot:

saloPedantic, good luck....you'll be hooked in no time (no pun intented). :)

Since gaining weight, I only have one pair of pants that fit me, and since I've blown all my money on makeup, I want to alter these pants so that they're something I can actually wear (since I don't have the money to buy new ones).

Didn't know which thread would be best for this, but since I'll be making alterations, I'm asking here. The pant is a side zip khaki petal pusher. The cuffless leg ends at about 1/3 up my calf. I feel that they are just too long. When I wear my short socks and running shoes with them, there's only a few inches of skin visible and it looks like I'm wearing pants that don't fit. The fabric is 100% cotton, and the leg is a straight wide leg (ie. no flare). Any suggestions on the best length for a pant like that? Is there any interesting detailing I could do at the end. I feel that since it's a wide leg it might look silly no matter how I cut it.

I'm 5'6". If that helps. I will try to post a picture later so you can get what I mean about it feeling too short to be a pant, but too long to look like anything else (good atleast). Until then, any suggestions would be great.

how to "make" a jeans skirt

Step 1 Using a seam ripper, open inner leg seams from lower edge to center (crotch) seam. Open center front seam to lower end of fly. Open center back seam to lower end of yoke or to within 5" (12.7cm) of waistband.

Step 2 Working on a flat surface, lap one front over the other so that lower end of fly lies flat without a lump. Pin center seam in place. Lap back sections in same manner. Notice the jeans have formed an A-line shape. Do not try to force the inner leg edges to meet.

Step 3 Try on garment. Now is the time to decide how flared you want your skirt to be, as well as the finished length. Adjust pins at center seams if necessary. Mark length. Remove garment. Machine-stitch center seams in place 5/8" (1.6cm) from raw edge, starting at upper end of openings and ending 5/8” (1.6cm) from inner leg edges, as shown. Be careful not to catch opposite side of garment into stitching. Back-stitch to reinforce stitching. Stitch again 1/4" (0.6cm) from first stitching.

Step 4
Cut off lower ends of legs at marking. Insert jeans leg under lapped front sections, as shown. Make sure raw edges of skirt lap at least 5/8" (1.6cm) over leg. Stitch each inner leg edge in place 5/8" (1.6cm) from raw edge, connecting to stitching at center seam. Stitch again 1/4" (0.6cm) from first stitching. Back-stitch to reinforce stitching. On inside, trim away excess fabric from seams to within 5/8" (1.6cm) of stitching. Apply remaining jeans leg to skirt back in same manner.

Step 5 Trim lower edge of skirt evenly. If you prefer, machine-stitch 1" (2.5cm) from lower edge of skirt. This stitching will prevent the edge from continuing to fray during future washings.

Additional Tips

  • If you prefer your skirt to have a finished look, remember to press under edges of inner legs before stitching them to insert and allow for a 1" hem at lower edge.
  • A purchased contrast fabric can be used for front and back insert sections.
  • Embellish your skirt using lace, ribbon, or braid along lower edge and seams. :flower:

well you made pretty good work with that "trial and error" :D

Two are from my own patterns. Pink top in silk blend, green dress in wool.

The tees are cotton. I sewed them from store-bought patterns and added details according to my random thoughts. The black spot on the white tee has volume from the side view. The black tee is where I cut out strips, twisted or tied them, and reattached. It can only be worn on top of something.
