you guys are all so wonderfully talented! i sew on and off and i have a few projects that i would like to get started on. can anyone tell me of some really good fabric stores in los angeles where i can find a good selection of nice luxury fabrics. i'd like to find some handpainted silk, some silk surat for making ties, and some nice cashmeres in bright colors for making matching pencil skirts and fall swing coats. i am very new to the area and i don't know where to go, but i don't want to use the polyester/wool blends that are available in places like joann fabrics. thanks so much.

MOST DEFINATELY THE FABRIC DISTRICT!!!!. i live north of LA, and work at a fabric store. we just got some great woolens and a bunch of ralph lauren wools in along with some nifty silk wool blends. you could try "barrons fabrics" in camarillo (and make a day of it, since there's the camarillo premium outlets right next door) they usually stock higher end dressmaking and apparel fabrics and the owner is this very sweet old man, mr. baron. "fabric well" in oxnard ...... "fabric town" in ventura:innocent: .....and i think there is one left up n santa barbara.....i know there's a place right off of the 101 or 405 when your driving into LA...but i dont know what it is called....it's supposed to be like the biggest fabric warehouse in southern cali.....hope you find something. i know it's not the best way of buying fabric, but ebay has some good finds...

thank you all very much nat_attak, spiralsnowman and Amy Louise :flower:

and Amy Louise, it was thick but really soft and the machine had no trouble with it,even going through 4 layers. unlike denim!

and criticsdarling i love the idea for that dress and the dress itself and it looks great on you!

I really like this fabric! It's kinda vintage-y, so I made this "very easy vogue" pattern dress. It was easy indeed!

Very cute frock--sweet-looking fabric. I think you should add a pretty necklace as a go-with."

I was misbehaving at the fabric store today. My wallet has thinned out dramatically, and my credit card has fattened up.

When I see people making outfits they always start with some white fabric i dont get why they start with that. Could someone explain what it is called and why its used?

^ It's called muslin, and the reason why they start with it is because it's cheap. If you make a mistake while working out a design with muslin it's no great loss, but if you were using a more expensive fabric, you'd be sorry.

exactly! you can also use ecology cloth, which is like stiff muslin. the neat thing about doing a muslin first is that it has grain like most fabrics and a definate bias, great for patternwork, you can draw all over it and such. it also lasts longer than pattern paper as well. :)

that's a very lovely dress, critics! :flower:

i spent a healthy 1.5 hours making this gold mini dress from scratch..and no pattern
a very 20's drop waist cut...nothing fancy
it was very easy to make and i only used up around 80% of my 1m fabric
it's not fancy, expensive fabric if you are wondering...this isnt made to last :vicx:

im gonna make more frocks later on...hopefully...i have my eyes set on this metalic midnight blue fabric(same material as this dress)...i ll get it tomorrow maybe

at it's normal state

here is how it looks like when i added on a belt at the waist

^i agree
and it looks elegant with or without the belt

OMG!!!
You made that in 1.5 hours!!??
It's sooo amazing!! and I love the fabric it looks really expensive...beautiful..

I can't even sew clothes yet * well I haven't tried* all I've really made are a couple bags for my High School Sewing class, I might post one if I'm proud of it...

^haha...yea...it was very easy
since i made up the pattern on spot...on the fabric..i didnt need to cut on paper or board etc.
than all i needed to do was take in here and there a little and sew some lines across :)

made another frock on sunday
less obnoxious to some maybe

this one took me a while...around 4 hours since i had to design it and think up how to draw the pattern
there are some snitches here and there that im not all so happy..but overall...it's not bad
i took up madame vionnet's idealogy...using triangles
though i didnt cut on bias...it still turnd out fine :)

I don't make my clothing but I make alot of my girlfriend's clothes. Mens wear is hard for me and I suck at pants.

I think I wrecked the dress thing I was making! I sewed th episs out of the collar seam, and I was just supposed to back stitch it. I'll have fun separating it on Thursday.

Need help

Hi, Id like to know if anyone does sewing here and could help me with a boring tedious question? I need to know approximate fabric usage(rating- measurment) for things like 1. A simple girls t-shirt, pants, short skirt, shorts, and a jacket etc.
I know its dull... but i can perhaps help you with some questions about fashion illustration if u want?
Hahahah... thanks again....:heart:

I made this dress a few days ago. The fabric isn't as thin as maybe it should have been for the dress to look it's best. But it's quite alright if you ask me. The shoulder straps look a bit out of place in the picture, but I don't think they do irl.

edit: edited to say that it has hidden pockets. which is something I love on dresses at the moment. :)

girls shirt (depending upon the width of the fabric, 45" wide= 1-1 1/4 yards
60" = 5/8 yard to 1 yard

pants= generally 2 1/2 yard unless the person is tall, or short, and if they are baggy, you need way more and if there are pockets, more too.

short skirt= 1 yard 45" fabric, 1/2 yard 60" (but then again this all depends on whether is is a ruffled skirt/pleated skirt/ cut on the bias etc.

shorts = 1 1/2 yard

jacket = 2 1/2 yards +

although it seems like a simple question you asked, it really depends on the widths of fabrics, the stretch if there is any, the pattern (bias cut, etc) and so many other things.
