Dear sewing experts, is it possible to alter drop-crotch pants to a normal rise, or would it ruin the overall fit? They are fairly loose-fitting pants, if it makes a difference.

And could someone please come up with a better term than drop-crotch? Sheesh.

"harem pants" maybe? I'm not a sewing expert but I'd imagine it depends on the fabric.. if they're slinky and have an odd fit already it may not be noticable, but anything like linen or cotton would be pretty hard to alter, I think. Altering anything in the "crotch region" is always risky business unless you're really advanced. Everytime I try altering jeans like that.. well let's just say it's not pretty

^I agree that it's an advanced sewing skill, I was pondering whether to take them to a tailor. Thanks for the input; they're cotton, but fairly fluid, so it might work. And they are not harem pants, those have a balloon-like shape at the hips, so the drop-crotch makes (some) sense. Mine are perfectly nice trousers ruined by an illogical crotch. Oh god, that word again...

things are moving along..

i made my first sleeve wednesday evening.
it is based on yves saint laurent spring 2001
we saw it through L'Officiel issue, a retrospective on his work

i drafted the pattern ,
made it in muslin
--in the final pattern i will move all the gathers to the back of the sleeve. much prettier i guess, more effect, my instructor suggested it.

second part of my project... there is a few corrections i need to do... such as get a longer zipper LOL and fix the facing on the inside.

plus seeing my knit fabric only a one way, i need to play around with that also. booyah, i hope all goes well and it gets selected for my school fashion show *crosses fingers*

one thing i have to say, i want to fix the block and pattern so i can make one for myself, its quite comfortable

I've been properly photographing my work for my portfolio.

Here is my first ever "dress" that I created the pattern for.
It's rough, and doesn't even fit a mannequin, but I shall always be proud of it.

Here is my latest piece of work that took days and days to create the pattern and cut out. It's based on the shape of an apron and the colours of Delftware.
The blue waist band is now corrected, as it was discovered to be completely askew when I thought I had finished. I had to un-pick the entire zip and sew it all again. Definately worth it in the end.

Here it also appears on my hyperactive and capricious friend who would not do as I asked. Good to see it on the body though.

Impressed you used darts in the first one --I don't think I even knew what darts were or looked like, when I started making clothes as a kid, without any knowledge of pattern making.
In the apron did you drop the back? The blue binding swoops down like a cowl

Does anyone know how to sew bias-cut seams?
When you join two pieces and press it open, the fabric grain on both pieces should be going the same direction??
Or does it matter?

I bought this vintage dress despite having one very similar..

It has a sheer section at the front with a few gems, most of which are falling off. As this is framed by heavy silver beading I thought perhaps I could cut this section out - to set it apart from the other dress which is also black beaded and high necked... and make it a little sexier

I mocked it up a little on photoshop to show what I mean but my phone camera is useless so perhaps imaginations are better!

Am I having a mad moment? Maybe I have been thinking about it too long but I'd like to get some opinions before I just go ahead...

i have to agree it looks better with the section cut out

you could always play with inserting a sheer fabric or some lace in the cut out section just a thought

are you in fashion or textile design?
i didn't learn garment construction when i was studying textiles, but a lot of the instructors in the dept were considering adding it since most of the girls there were into that...

i am studying clothes making now though.

i actually do fashion marketing but we get to dable in abit of everything which is always good we have learned pattern making since year one but not as in depth as the fashion course has. so im making my own clothes screen printing them but then i also have to market them through styling and mocking up websites and other forms of promotion even making costing sheets which im not looking forward to! a bit of an all round course really.

its a little bit more complicated than that, ill try to draw a sketch later on of how the pattern should look like

those might be kick pleats
they are small pleats that don't go the length of the whole garment, like an ordinary pleat
