They have been friends for a while. There are quite a few photographs of the pair of them at various events and some of Hugh posing with her half sister Natasha. They knew one another before she was with Jude and there's a magazine scan of them where she was sporting dark hair. I love that photograph above though. She looks like a squirrel with all that eye make up, ahha.
