CASANOVA at the
62nd Venice International Film Festival
Casanova will be the featured film for the gala evening of Saturday September 3rd during the 62nd Venice International Film Festival, to be held on theVenice Lido from August 31st to September 10th. It will be the world premiere of Casanova by Swedish director Lasse Hallström, starring Heath Ledger (as Casanova), Sienna Miller, Jeremy Irons and Lena Olin. Casanova is, after an interval of almost 30 years, the first film by a major production company to be filmed entirely in Italy (and more importantly in Venice), and is to be distributed in Italy by Buena Vista International.
The agreement was reached in the past few days by the Director of the 62nd Festival, Marco Müller, with the management of Buena Vista International and their Italian branch.
"We have been courting the producers of this film, which shows off Venice as an extraordinary movie set, ever since last year", declared the Festival's Director, Marco Müller. "It is the perfect film for a festive occasion; it is a fun, unrestrained work, like the classic Hollywood cloak-and-dagger films, but with a robust dose of modern, irreverent modernity. I wish to thank Buena Vista International and Touchstone Pictures for their precious help in making this extraordinary event possible".
For its part, Touchstone has confirmed its own enthusiasm in presenting Hallström's film for its world premiere in Venice, as a central event in such a prestigious, internationally acclaimed festival.
Amongst those present in the Sala Grande in the Palazzo del Cinema for the gala evening on Saturday 3rd September will be the film's director Lasse Hallström, its producers Mark Gordon, Betsy Beers and Leslie Holleran, and some of the main cast, including Heath Ledger (Casanova), Sienna Miller*and Lena Olin.
Casanova, by Lasse Hallström (Chocolat, The Cider House Rules), was filmed almost entirely both indoors and outdoors in Venice. It is a rousing romantic comedy about Casanova's - the world's most notorious seducer - greatest adventure, losing his heart. A swashbuckler, master of disguise and wit, it was said no woman could resist Casanova's (Heath Ledger) amorous charms. But he meets his match with an alluring Venetian beauty, Francesca (Sienna Miller) who refuses him.
The film also stars Oscar winner Jeremy Irons as the detective-like Bishop Pucci, who pursues Casanova for the Inquisition, Oscar nominee Lena Olin as Francesca's mother and Oliver Platt as Papprizzio, Francesca's betrothed.
