St Ives Apricot Scrub, Good or Evil

?

Why wasn't this topic made like a month ago? I started using the scrub and now I look like a pizza face. Before, I NEVER use to have pimples but now they are all over my face. I guess I'll lay off it for a while and stop using it so much. I think the problem is that I'm a little too complusive about black heads and cleaning my face/body.

modelmama...thanks for the advice!

Also, what product do you guys suggest to get deep down into those pores? Compulsiveness again!:D

The large particles can cut your skin as well:o , this scrub is really harsh. Alot of people dont know their skin type so you have to be really careful. I thought I had oily skin cause I was always shiny so I would always use stuff for oily skin and it would make me break out, I went to make up counters as well like Clinique Ugh thats the worst stuff! the girl sold me stuff for oily skin ( like she could tell over the counter what my skin type was!)

I went to a really really good estetician (sp?) and she informed me that i had been using the wrong stuff on my skin so basically since I was a teen I was using oily skin stuff and had combination/sensitive skin.

I think dermalogica, Epicuren, YonKa and for over the counter Biore make the best skin products. The best tip I have ever gotten was to stop using bars on my skin. I dont use anything that comes in a bar because it has wax in it to hold it together and it just causes extra build up. I like liquid cleansers and I use a nylon brush ( the ones with the acrylic handle and white bristles) instead of a towel to get make up off.:flower:

Since my dermologica scrub is way more gently I can use it more often. I use it about 2 to 3 times a week. You can use it daily if needed as well. It all depends on your skin type, if you slough off more skin cells then you need to exfoliate more.

The best thing to do is spend the $60 on a facial with a reputable estetitian and let them guide you. No one over the counter can ever perscribe the right treatment for you:angry: , they have to look at your skin and pores up close and see how they react to different treatments.

Hear hear..I couldn't agree more SanDiego..I think a lot of people mistake a slight sebum overproduction in the upper skin layers with oily skin, and aggravate it with using product meant for oily skin while just below the surface they have dry or sensitive skin. Having an esthetician have a closer look at your skin is definately worth the money it costs :flower:

I bought it a while ago and it's been working fine for me... I don't use it very often...
But after reading all this, I'm kinda scared now:cry:
I don't know if I should keep on using it... I don't want my skin to break out...

me, too.... i only use it once a week or so... and i have oily skin... i thought it was helping, but maybe in the long run it isn't good for my face...

its really good on my skin, ive been using it twice a day

I think those exfoliating grains are dangerously large!!! Maybe for your body but i think it is too harsh for your face.

Thats what I was thinking too. The exfoliating grains are the same size as the scrub I use for my body. I don't use St. Ives anymore because it caused my skin to breakout.

i use the medicated one . . . with the salicylic acid.......

i must say, my skin is so soft, cmooth and blemish free, it's amazing.

for me, it's magical and fabulous~

Whats the name of this?? I have combination skin 2,so its hard to choose what things to use on your face.

I found it too harsh for my skin. An even cheaper alternative that I use is baking soda with a bit of Cetaphil ;)

I second iWasNora, the medicated scrub is magical. I have spent massive amounts of financial resources on skin care products and St. Ives scrub with salicylic acid is inexpensive and effective...what else can you ask for? It comes in a white and blue tube, "Apricot Scrub, Blemish and Blackhead Control, Oil Free with Salicylic Acid".

Actually, the best thing to do is see a dermatologist. ;) They have the best training when it comes to your skin, skin types and recommending products. I don't do facials, scrubs or any of those other "spa" treatments because my skin is uber-sensitive. The only person I TRUST to recommend anything for my skin is my dermy...and I get many compliments on the condition of my skin.

And folks you don't need to spend buckets of money to keep your face in top form. Some of the best products recommended by dermatologists can be found in drugstores, not the makeup counter of some high end stores. Brands like Cetaphil, Basic, Neutrogena...you just can't go wrong! B)

As for St Ives...I only use the hand and foot scrub. The facial scrub looks scary!

True a dermotologist is probably the best option. I just think people shouldnt trust those make up counter people. My skin wasnt extreme enough to go to a dermotologist I just thought I had oily skin and it took a pro to tell me what it really was not someone looking at your face over a counter.

I still like Epicuren, Dermologica, and YonKa. So if your gonna go with salon products these are the best ones imo. If the medicated st. ives works thats great. I havent tried it yet.

i use the st ives medicated apricot scrub as a body scrub, works very well. As for me worrying about it making my skin rough and not smooth, it's ok, i'm a guy. I need some manly scars on my body. ;)

throw it out!

i used too spend tons on facial products; from back in the noxema and clearasil days, too clinique and proactiv. your face doesn't need all that stuff, your body is made too be able too take care of yourself.

one of the best things i've ever done for myself was too stop using moisturizer and too wash it less. it was hard, my skin was disgustingly dry for a week, but after that my skin drastically improved using its natural oils instead of some lab concoction. either wya back onto topic, your skin doesn't need some fancy exfoliator, just wash your face every evening with a simple cleaner and rub/massage your face..you'll see dead skin rub off. when you get out of the shower, give it a thourough wipe with your towel.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only person here who's had a problem with this scrub! It is positively EVIL.

I tried it a couple of years ago, thanks to the recommendation of a friend, because my regular scrub had been discontinued. BIG MISTAKE. I used it at night and woke up with the reddest, rashiest excuse for a face that I had ever seen. I cried; that's how mortified I was. I spent the entire weekend with a cool cloth over my face before the rash went down, and it took another week for the redness to completely go away. NEVER AGAIN am I touching that!

Since then, I've been too scared to try any new skin products, so I've been sticking to what I know works for me. I haven't found a replacement scrub that I'm game enough to try, so I just use my regular Dove (used to be Ponds) Daily Exfoliating Cleanser, which is extremely gentle and thus is able to be used every day.

St Ives is definitely a very strong product.
I used it until recently, caused me no breakouts (but I don't breakout, so it's not indicative), yet I could tell it was v-e-r-y harsh.
I wouldn't recommend it anymore.

If you really want to use a scrub everyday, use scrubs like 7 Day Scrub Cream by Clinique (the name says it all). Use it 4-5 (say) days if you think it's too much.
Scrubs work well if you use clarifying lotions afterwards.

From what I’ve read many derms say this type of scrub is unnecessary and does more harm than good. One in particular said rubbing your face w/ a washcloth is all the exfoliation you need. Though I must admit I use Body Shop Japanese Washing Grains around my nose every so often. I like the sound of using baking soda with a bit of Cetaphil. Does it get rid of black heads, Ironic?
