"Let's go back to the beginning," Kate Hudson began as she took to the Vogue Festival stage with her long-time friend Stella McCartney.
"Oh gosh, she's going to be good at this, isn't she?" McCartney smiled to the audience, before giggling: "This is so funny!"
The next distraction was the cry of a baby at the back of the auditorium: "What was that," McCartney said, as both of them looked up. "We've got our baby radars on."
"We're both lactating," Hudson laughed.
The duo were soon reminiscing about the first time they met.
"We met at the VH1 Fashion Awards," Hudson said. "I saw her - she was so cool - standing in this doorway with Keith Richards."
"I always carry Keith Richards with me in my handbag so I look cool," McCartney deadpanned.
Memory Lane visited, the twosome talked about their similar present priorities: family.
"My kids are funny," McCartney said. "They are all so different. My eldest, he just likes football. The middle two - a girl and a boy - are quite close in age, and they're both really in to fashion. My daughter says, 'I like this dress mummy, but can't we make it a bit shorter?' - and my son will say, 'I love that colour of blue'. He's the one who I say, 'Will you come and work with me when you're older? Do you promise?'"
But it wasn't all family and fun - fashion also figured. Admitting she chose to partner with Gucci Group - then helmed by Tom Ford and Domenico de Sole - based on who she "most wanted to have dinner with," she also emphasised the importance of her team.
"They're the best in the world," McCartney said earnestly. "I try not to take it too seriously: the fluff. I balance it. And I don't always get it right; I'm not perfect. But I have a great team. They've allowed me to have kids and find that balance."
One thing she did get right however was this season's pyjama styles, which inspired a spring trend.
"They were inspired by men's pyjamas, I can't lie about that," she smiled. "By the lightness and the shape. We went to far at first, and the fitters said: 'Come on guys. We're just wearing pyjamas.' But eventually we got there."
After recovering from a comment from an audience member - who called McCartney an "inspiration," and which almost made both Hudson and the designer cry - talk turned inevitably to the Olympics. Despite saying she has designed "about 500 collections this year alone," McCartney admitted the Team GB collection for the Olympics was something special.
"It was over 1,000 pieces," she explained. "We designed everything they wear. For all the disciplines."
"You might be responsible for wins and losses," Hudson added with a smirk.
"With friends like you, eh Kate?" McCartney responded.
A final question from the floor about the impact counterfeit goods prompted a mixed response.
"Part of you thinks, 'that's really annoying - we worked really hard on that,'" McCartney admitted. "But my CEO came in one day so happy and said: 'My mum just saw a fake Falabella Bag in Marbella!' I suppose it does show you've hit kind of a sweet spot if people are copying you. But with the Silhouette Dress and the Polkadot Dress last season, we did have to send a few little letters reminding people that maybe it's not a good idea."
