Straightening / Flat Irons

Has anyone purchased the GVP (Generic Value Products) versions of the CHI? I think GVP is only sold at Sally Beauty Supply. . .I want a CHI but its not in my budget and these flat irons only run around $60. A friend told me about them, so I looked at the website and it's received good reviews (even though they were only 5).
Thanks!

I don't think CHI's are all that great. My cousin has one & I was using it at her house & I really did not like it. I use one called HAI and it's cheaper but does a way better job, I think. & they use the exact same one at the Frederic Fekkai salon, so it must be good!

i own ga.ma ceramic laser ion hair straightener and it's pretty good, but my hair gets dry too fast because of it.

you might want to check out ebay for used hair irons, they're a lot cheaper

My chi just broke! I was thinking about getting a ghd...but it's so expensive. Has anyone tried ordering from amazon and know if it's legitimate?

I've ordered t3 from amazon and I believe its authentic but they dont come with warrenty, I'm not sure if other hair products are the same way.

I got a Chi about a month ago. I used to use cheap ones ($20-ish range) and it took me ages to straighten my hair and then it'd curl & frizz an hour later. The Chi makes my hair straight and silky for a much longer time and it cut my straightening time from about 40 minutes to 15-20. I personally love it, I wish I had gotten it sooner.

I had T3 wet to dry straightener and I loved it. I have very curly nappy hair and it made my hair very straight, sleek and shiny. Unfortunately when I went overseas it blew out. I've bought a CHI and so far I am not pleased. It does not straighten my hair very well at all. I think i'm going to try a babyliss

I use Remmington straighteners- they're so cheap (about £25) and they work perfectly. My hair is naturally thick and curly and after blow drying straight, just going over my hair with them makes it sleek- it never ever goes curly unless it gets wet again. Most of my friends use GHDs and I honestly wouldn't change mine for them- GHDs make my hair 'too straight' if that's possible. It just goes flat and static. I like a bit of lift..

I think if your hair is going curly/wavy its more to do with how you dry it rather than straighten it. As long as the straighteners have a fairly high heat you can't really go wrong, in my experience anyway.

I find it so hard to straighten my own hair,I'm a total dork lol. I wish I could though,my sister uses her straighteners to curl her hair and when I try it I just burn my fingers

You can buy straightening gloves, if that would help.. I'm not sure where from but I've seen a few hairdressers using them, so perhaps try a wholesaler? :flower:

If you keep practicing you'll find a technique that doesn't burn your hands- I used to burn my hands all the time and hated it but it's not a problem now- I think your skin gets used to the heat after a while :innocent:

Hope this helps...x

How is it burning your hair? When you touch the hair after using the straightener on it?

I have the GHD Salon Straightener and I love it

I used to burn my fingers all the time touching my hair as I'm straightening it. I dont go to 400 degrees anymore after all the damage it did to my hair so its not as much of a problem anymore. I try to keep it at 200, sometimes 250-300 if I'm really in a hurry.

I do the coppola keratin smoothing treatment at home where you have to straighten your hair over and over in tiny sections at 450 degrees. I burn my fingerprints off for the the next week

I would kill to own the GHD straightener. I've heard so many good things. I'm planning on purchasing one once my Chi dies once and for all .

Hi girls :flower:

I have a Remington straightener. The exact model is Remington 3x protection sleek and curl s1032.
You CANNOT BURN your hair with this one, because it has 3 layers of protection: tourmaline+ceramic+non-stick teflon coats!
It had a digital temperature display for heat control ( 130 to 200 degrees).
It`s wide enough to easily use on long hair, and it`s also great for very naturally looking relaxed curls.
I LOVE IT!
You can see all details here (including explanations for the 3x protection layers):

As a heat protection (including for the hairdryer heat protection, so i apply it on wet hair before drying it) i`m using Wella Profesional products. To be more specific, it`s Wella HighHair Flat Iron Spray - Strong Control.
Here it is:

I have bought it from my hairdresser, since here it`s not available directly in the stores (it`s written on it that it`s a product dedicated exclusively for professional hair salons). Maybe you are luckier than me and you can find it in the stores.
I am so fond of it because it doesn`t make the hair oily, but it makes it incredibly shiny; it doesn`t make the hair heavy or sticky, but it fixes it long term-straight and it makes it perfectly silky + it has antifrizz effect! It simply does magic! :magic: So, try it, if you can find it, it`s really professional and you will see great results!

Be careful of straighteners! Before last week, I thought the worst things straighteners could do was 1. give you split ends or 2. burn your fingers/ear if you weren't careful enough. My Nicky Clarke straighteners EXPLODED on me last week. A small piece of the cord broke, there was this loud pop, sparks flew and burned my wrist. Luckily I didn't burn my face or my hair which I guess was really lucky. My wrist was quite badly burned though.

So I guess I just wanted to warn everyone on here to check the cords before you use the straighteners. Mine seemed fine and I was about five-ten minutes into using them when they just exploded like that. I've had these straighteners for four years and they've never given me any problems until now so if any of you guys have any 'old' straighteners, just be careful!

On another note, I'm looking for new straighteners. I have Asian hair which is naturally straight-ish but I made the mistake of perming it last year so now its half straight and half growing out perm. Any recommendations? I really want GHDs cuz I hear they're good for curling hair too but not sure if I want to fork out that much money..

^ Good to hear your okay . That's really scary.

I have one of the old chi's (before they switched production companies) and I love it but when it dies I'm going to invest in a GHD.

Straightening Hair

So basically my hair stylist told me I need to lay off on the flat iron if I want my hair to grow the length that I'm dreaming of. My hair is thin and longer than chin length/just above my shoulders. The thing is, I CAN'T STOP using the flat iron. If I just blow dry it it looks all frizzy and poofy and I have no idea how to just blow dry it straight. Any tips? Also, what do you girls use as a heat protector before blow drying/straightening?

Hi!:flower:I am no expert but do you have naturally curly hair? How do you dry your hair? What kind of brushes and hair potions do you use? I agree a flat iron is tough. I have long (reaches my butt) naturally wavy hair and I blow dry it and flat iron it and don't have too many problems.
