It could have been, but they gave it all away much too early. Ruined the suspense and it just dragged on.

Takeshi and Shu Qi? That's news to me. I'll have to disagree with that declaration. I think they're both really good, especially TK. Shu Qi annoyed me in this one though (I think it had more to do with the character), but she was excellent in Millennium Mambo and Three Times. Surprisingly, I thought it was Tony Leung who was really bland in this. Seemed like he was phoning it in.

But the acting was the least of the problems in this film.

Meh, the Oscars or any award system for that matter is not really the gold standard for actual talent or skill, in acting at least. Maybe for politicking. I have found his performances really good, and very wide in range. That's what made me pay attention to him in the first place. Anyway, I'll agree to disagree with your opinion.
