The 4-5 piece French wardrobe #1

i just always end up buying black because I think it looks the best on me compared to other colors...
Once in a while I'll see something in my closet that has never been worn. I always get lots of wear out of all my black pieces though. I can see why some people prefer colors, but black is sexy, matches with everything, and is flattering on the majority of people.

I forgot my only black cardigan at my mom's months ago, and I got it back last week... It's almost embarrassing how much easier it is to get dressed in the morning, that little piece of clothing makes my whole wardrobe come together  I'm addicted to black :ninja:

Oh, most of my outfits revolve around my black cardigan too!!

I've been following this topic for a while now (only just signed on for tfs) and I must say that I love it! It is really a new, refreshing way of looking at your wardrobe. I haven't succeeded yet in buying only 4-5 key pieces per season, but I do think more and better about what I buy! So that is definitely a good start for me!

Underage, I completely agree. I think that color is beautiful but not on me so I gravitate towards black and white. :D

Belowen, Im the same. A black habit is hard to break! Haha.

I've actually written an article in my blog about this and I just want to thank everyone for inspiring me to streamline and edit my wardrobe :D

I recently got the most beautiful black blazer in Vero Moda, which is usually rather cheap and skanky looking :ninja: But it fits me as if it was made for me and it looks so expensive

I also purchased another silk tee from H&M in dark blue this time. I have the exact same tee in nude (1st pic), and it is one of the best staples I have. It's 100% silk, shiny, loose-fitting and it has pockets...everything I want in a top ^_^

^ That fits you SO well and it looks really good!!! That silk top looks amazing.. I need to check out an H&M!

The tees are only available online, I don't think they've ever been in stores :( But yes, I'm so happy about that blazer...even though I need to dress it down if I want to get some wear out of it

Oh, look what dropped into my shopping basket on hm.com...an oversize white shirt :innocent:

I love your new purchases, The Ida. I'm still looking for the perfect black jacket and just not having much luck. Finding the optimal combination of quality material and excellent fit is proving difficult.

I did however manage to find a perfect pair of slim cut wool trousers from Akris on sale at Saks Fifth Ave. in a gorgeous inky blue-black. They are a seasonless weight and will work with everything I have in black, charcoal, grey and white. For a change something just perfect! (And it didn't hurt that I paid less than 1/3 of the original price.)

^Thanks!

Trousers are my biggest problem...I really don't have any. It's so hard to find any that fits.

when people travel, they essentially work with a limited wardrobe. i guess it shouldn't be so much harder to apply that tight editing to clothing that we live with.
(can you tell i'm packing for a trip right now? ;) )
but i'm also doing an experiment right now of having an almost literal 4-5 piece wardrobe.
makes packing easy. :p

Ok, I've put a shopping ban on myself for the rest of this year, and I'm determined to follow the 4-5 piece per season rule next year.

It's true, on trips I am amazed at how little I need, and actually enjoy living out of a suitcase, it feels so efficient. I then vow to pare down my wardrobe at home, but I have all these sentimental and unique pieces I just can't get rid of.

Like ms nietzche, Im also looking forward to starting my 4-5 piece system next year. Planning, budgeting, and actually going out and buying instead of wasting time and money indecisively.

Just stopped by to report buying a couple of things :p

Laurie Ann, how exciting to have found the perfect pants on sale :woot:

I needed some comfortable pants that weren't pajamas for working in my home office ... something I can run outside or to the grocery store in, & throw in the laundry (vs sending to the cleaners like I do most things). I have jeans, but I don't really consider those truly comfortable. I tried on a bunch of things, ended up buying a couple pairs of wide-leg velour pants on sale in black and forest green. When the SA told me they were great for sleeping in, that was so not what I wanted to hear  They're being altered ...

My December update

Planned to
  • buy long skirt
  • (maybe) buy ankle booties
  • clear out wardrobe
Done
  • bought long skirt - wanted it for ages, it finally went on sale! :woot:
  • bought two basic tops in off-white, short- and long-sleeved
  • barely managed to do laundry :ninja:
I broke the zipper on my winter boots, and now I have to decide whether to get it replaced or get a new pair. Until then, my mum generously borrowed me an unused pair of boots that were a bit too small for her. Else I'd be freezing my toes off in my autumn booties.

Am still hankering after a long big warm scarf from Zara (have too many scarves already + too expensive for a scarf, but so nice!) and a high-neck Victorian-style blouse (didn't bid on a perfect one on eBay that went for only £4 in the end, why??). These two I have been thinking about for over two months now!

- 1 simple coloured cardigan (purple would be good) (bought!!)
- a knitted cardigan (bought!)
- few plain t-shirts and tops
- a striped long sleeve (bought!!)
- 2 simple dresses for wearing every day (one bought)
- a pair of simple shoes for spring (bought)
- pair of ballet flats

another update, I bought a nice simple blue dress from AA, I also get nice flat shoes for christmas! So not much missing anymore!!! even though im not gonna move anymore I still want to have those basics by the summer

This is so true (and I too am packing for a trip ). I usually follow some simple rules: lots of basic tees and camisoles (black and white), grey cardigans, black coats, black/brown skirts and shorts and two pairs of really good jeans. Shoes and bags are also black, and the accessories provide a touch of colour (scarves, necklaces, earrings etc). It may sound boring but it works wonders. ^_^
