The 4-5 piece French wardrobe #1

Yeah, I was surprised by the numbers. But only 8 pairs of shoes, wow, maybe living in the city I tend to wear them out faster (even with zipsoles). I think probably Americans tend to have large closets full of disposible clothes. Come to think of it usually when I catch an episode of What Not to Wear I'm amazing by not only how much stuff people have, but how much junk they have in their overstuffed closets.

elle, for me often I can tell a "love" when there is a combination of a "must-have-it-now" sensation mixed with "omg this is so me," and of course the practical "and it goes with XXX or works so well for my X lifestyle." Sometimes things have to wait, and those things I obsess over for a long time tend to work out as well. Sometimes I buy something and it ends up not getting worn often *LV Sprouse Scarf in grey* despite having all those qualities.

Mandy, I love basics, I've honed down my style to basic or perhaps sleek cuts along with a minimal color pallette with edgy accessories. So for me its not an issue, especially because I really wear my basics alot. If you're wearing and enjoying them I don't think its a problem.

While I was getting my finances (from january until now) in order I discovered that I've been pretty good at keeping up with the 4-5 seasonal pieces concept. During winter I bought 3 items, 5 during spring, 6 for the summer season and so far I have bought 2 pieces for autumn.

But what struck me was the amount of basics I had bought. It was a total of 25 pieces (including shoes, bags and accessoires). Although most of them were very much needed and they're good quality, I still feel like it's a lot (too much maybe?). Sometimes I feel like I'm buying so many basics to make up for the lack of seasonal clothes I allow myself to buy. I was wondering if anyone else has been experiencing the same 'problem'?

I usually shoot for about half basics and half statement pieces ... part of the reason for that is that finding those really good basics is so much work, so I'm balancing work and fun :P

Btw, the '4-5' is key pieces per season, 2 seasons per year. Not that you can't do something different, because you can

thanks for the input :flower:

I know, I know, I've been cheating a bit since the thought of buying only 8-10 statement pieces a year was kind of intolerable  (trying hard to "get over myself" though, so that one day soon, it won't seem so intolerable anymore:blush:)
But you're right, it takes a lot of time and effort to find good basics, so I guess it's actually a good thing that I've found so many great items. And having bought these basics now will probably save me a lot of money in the next few years!

wearing my old black blazer again today i realised i should get a now one. i want this to be sort of an investment piece that i can wear for years. but i haven't yet figured out where to buy it. it should be midpricerange. any recommendations where to buy well cut blazers?

Love the Yohji pieces you posted, fashionista-ta, especially the coat in the first photo. I would love to get my hands on those red booties as well, but I haven't seen them anywhere yet.

try D&G from store.dolcegabbana.com - pictures from the site
I bought the blue jacket with defined shoulders but there are some very classic blazers too
also love the pants - and I bought these too.
The Blazer is wool and silk and the pants are cool wool. I think this year they improved the qualitity of the fabrics they use and they use the same cut as the main Dolce Gabanna line. For more pricy option - Dolce Gabanna has the best blazers for me.
The other good option in the range of 500 euro is Ralf Lauren - blue label - very nice cut.

It's amazing what the defined shoulders can do to your silhouette. Some critics have been going on about how it's an 80s revival, but the 80s power shoulders just made me look stumpy necked and wide in my torso. Thanks to the new cuts also, these shoulders now actually make my neck look longer and my torso longer and narrower. Love that D&G blazer on the right above, by the way aris.

^

I do love that it makes your waist look so much smaller. I have a blazer from Vero Moda (super cheap and sometimes skanky Danish brand) that has, well, not exaggerated shoulders, but defined is a better word. I think it makes me look taller. It isn't oversized like those awful boyfriend blazers, it has a pretty snug fit...which means that it isn't too trendy and that I can keep using it for ages. It also hides my gigantic butt. :D

I can go almost an entire year wearing the same thing in different ways... I think it's a disease?

if it's a disease, what can i do to get ill? :innocent:

i'll add an amazing silk blouse and a comfy cotton blouse to my list.
or are those basics that don't go on my list? :ninja:

The reason is that the shoulder pad is just fitting the one's shoulder - doesn't go outside and the arm hole is much smaller. I love it, even though I have big shoulders it look nice on me.
