The Acne Thread

I've just gotten back from the doctor. He was HORRIBLE to me, for many reasons, and I'm going to change doctor. The swelling on my face and my neck has gone down. I explained to him the symptoms/condition that I had, and he said that because he couldn't see it he said he had no reason to believe me  He has put me on the topical solution Dalacin T I think it is called, all I know is that it is similar to zineryt that I was first put on in July. Anyone heard of it?

^It's extremely drying with all of that alcohol it has in it. I wouldn't use it, if I were you... My derm gave it to me too, but I stopped cos it made my skin dry up and peel...

Thank you :flower: I've just smelt it and it made my eyes water. Also I've just read the instructions and it says not to use if you have previously had swelling on the face whilst on antibiotics, which was the exact symptoms I described to him, that he disregaded. I'm in two minds if I should use it. I think I will probably give it a go for a week and see if the swelling returns or I have a reaction, and go from there.

^That's terrible that your derm wouldn't believe you. Skin reactions are nothing to play around with and it's foolish of him not to take it seriously.

I personally would not use it. I've used derm recommended skin products that have a lot of alcohol before, and I found it just irritated the problem. I have sensitive skin, but I can't see how putting alcohol on your skin can ever be good. I went to a different derm and she told me alcohol is horrible for your skin. It does dry it out, which can initially cause a clearing up, but it also strips your skin which can cause further breakouts and skin damage later on...

I would change derms and get a second oppinion. Good luck with it! :)

^I took it and it went well for me too. The only side effects I had was dry skin and dry eyes. In the beginning I got a lot of headaches but that was gone in the first month.

The important thing is this: If you have a history of depression, don't take it. If not, take it, and have a close friend watch you. If you start acting strangely it may be a sign to stop.

Accutane is great. It completely cleared me up. It's about 2 years later and my skin is still doing well. I still break out, but it's nothing unmanageable.

^its great to hear its still working for you after the treatment, im scared to get off of it. I've heard accutane is what cleared up jessica simpsons skin?

- when i first got on it, i was SOO scared of becoming depressed but despite all the crazyness that is my life, im very happy and havent noticed any change . The only big side effect ive experienced is very dry chapped lips, like ' my lips feel like theyre falling off ' kind of sensation lol but worth it for the improvement of my skin.
-if anyone else is on it, ive been using weleda almond facial oil (non comedagenic) at night and its been working wonders and not breaking me out.

^ My friend went on Accutane and had very chapped lips. But aside from that, I didn't notice any changes in behaviour and she said dryness was the only side effect that bothered her.

Oh gosh, it feels so long ago that I can't remember the exact span of time I took it. I estimate I was on it for around 6-7 months. I started out on 20mg and at the end was up to 80.

I wouldn't be scared to get off of it. In some cases the acne does come back, but with accutane it permanately shrinks your pores (according to my derm), therefore even if acne reoccurs it is easier to treat with topical creams or less aggressive pills.

With my skin, for the first year I had hardly any break outs at all, with only the occasional spot here and there. My skin also continued to produce less oil.

It wasn't until 2 yrs after that I realized a slight increase in oil and a few more breakouts, but they are treatable. I'm very glad I used Accutane, it really helped me.

By the way, for dryness, aquaphor works wonders!! I also used lubricating eye drops, and Johnson's baby lotion did wonders for my skin. It stopped dryness and was still gentle enough for my sensitive skin.

^thank you! ill have to try aquaphor

for the person that asked my derm said around 5 months, they started me at 30mg, and now im at 60 mg a day. :flower:

Cool, I've never heard of using eye drops for dryness before. I think I'll try it next time I get dry, sensitive patches.

Taking Pantothetic Acid ( I think it's vitamin b5) completely cleared my fairly bad acne. If you do a search there's alot of websites about it. x

^ I bought some of that but ended up not going through with it. How much did you take a day because it says you have to sort of overdose on it :/

yep you do kinda..I remember it was a very high dose to begin with but only for the first month, after that it reduces alot. I look it almost four years ago and have never had any negative side effects, and my acne never returned! The only problems I have now is I continue to have oily skin, if anyone knows a way to help that I'm all ears! X

Im back on a cocktail of Diane35, Androcur, and Aldactone. I hope it works
My acne is getting unbearable. I feel ugly all the time its become normal :)

I heard Omega 3 fish oils can help oily skin. I think you have to balance out your omega 3 and omega 6 intakes. Kind of confusing... but there's a lot of information about it floating around online.

oops, I guess it did sound like I said to put it on your skin, but that's not what I meant. lol

I got reallly dry eyes on accutane so I had to use eyedrops constantly.

Vaseline on the skin works well too. It is yucky, but gets those dry patches gone in no time. And with Accutane your pores shrink so about the 3rd month in you don't have worry about clogging your pores.

I've heard of success with the b5, but I've never tried it. It's def an alternative....

How long do you have to go on it for in order to get lasting results?

Has anyone tried taking flaxseed oil? I have read that that can help acne from within
