Hello,
I am african american..my complexion is exactly like Kelly Rowland's (Destiny Child;just in case you don't know) and I have a problem with my skin, I think that it looks dull. My skin is not ashy but it doesn't glow like the celebrities so I was just wondering if anyone knew of any products that can give me that affect of glowing skin.

Thanx:flower:

So do you just have dry skin?
There's great suggestions all over the board. What type of things do you do for your skin now?

My skin is not dry its just dull looking...right now I use Nivea Body

I'm not Black, so I cannot tell you if it will work for you or not, but I have a book written by doctors that recommends the best products for non-White skin (Black, Asian, Indian, Middle-Eastern, etc.). What kind of product are you looking for exactly? Something just for your face, or something for both your face and your body?

The book is called Beautiful Skin of Color: A Comprehensive Guide to Asian, Olive and Dark Skin by Jeanine Downie, Fran Cook-Bolden, etc.

I thought I could look through, see what products were recommended and type them up for you, but I just realised I have already packed the book (moving in two weeks)! Sorry!

It is ok, I'm going to check out the book..thanks so much:flower:

Most Black skin care products are for making skin lighter not brighter so unsure what to tell you. Use a scrub to get rid of the dead skin, use a non drying cleasner (which could be part of your problem- your cleanser is too drying) and use a good moisturizer. Aveeno has great soy based cleansing products and a light bronzer can give a nice sun kissed effect- maybe someone at the MAC counter has a suggestion.

Sometimes Essence magazine has good beauty product tips- maybe flipping through the April- July issues for tips of summer skin products.

Hope this helps :flower:

Neostrata has good products for giving your skin a brighter look. Not lighter, brighter! Anyway, their daily moisturizers have glycolic acid (4%-10%) and it exfoliates and smoothes out your skin over time. The results are beautiful and they work for EVERY type of skin.

you might want to have a look at anita grant's fabulous expert site anitagrant.com. afrobella.com is also a great source.

I am a black woman, caramel complexion with combo skin. I try to find "good" products regardless of if they are for "us". Right now I have been using Garnier Nutrionist line. Love it!! my skin looks and feels amazing. try it...........

It doesn't matter what skin colour you have or what your ethnical
background is. It comes down to what skintype you have.

Is your skin oily/dry/combination/normal?
Is your skin prone to acne/clogging/blackhead/whiteheads?
Is your skin resistent/sensitive?

After knowing your skintype, it will be easier to recommend you
what products you need.

If you're not sure, please have a look at the following thread:

Hope that helps somewhat :flower:

I would agree that knowing your skintype will certainly help when it comes to the skincare side of things. Your skin type is the most important thing I think. If my skin is feeling dull though I generally like to exfoliate or use a mask to clear my skin of impurities. Both of those things really help especially if I follow them with a nice rich moisturizer. I think that exfoliating is great no matter what your skin color is.

I have combo/acne prone skin and I swear by Arcona. That brand is not specific to any race of skin but it came highly recommended to me and I started seeing results within the first 3 days of use.

I also like Astara for acne prone combo skin. Both brands are pretty gentle, natural (“living” so it has a short shelf life) but very effective.

Sorry, but I must disagree because from the book I wrote about it sounds like they are right as my experience (and many others) is exactly as they have described it: I tried so many products (and yes, there were specifically for my skin type), nothing seemed to work and the only result was more spots and ugly hyperpigmentation blotches. My white friends (with the same skin type and number of spots or even more) tried the same products and were almost immediately cured and hardly ever got any hyperpigmentation. If our ethnicity does not matter, there should not be a difference at all; the same products (for the same skin types) should not give white people perfect clear skin and yet give non-white people blotchy pizza faces.

Sorry if I’m preaching to the choir but if you have hyperpigmentation, you MUST wear a sunscreen, especially if you’re using products with AHA, BHA, renenol or anything that chemically exfoliates. Some of those products can result to more spots and blotchiness when exposed to the sun w/o protection. Its good for everyone to use it, but especially if you have dark skin. The rays darken areas already affected.
