The Etc Etc of Perfumes & Fragrances

But isn't cologne also for women? At least in my language cologne, edT adn edP are 3 different things and they exist as well for men as for women. I'm confused.

It all depends. From my experience, the differences is sometimes is just marketing. Other times, perfumes are sometimes manufactured for both men and women.

Examples of Unisex (perfumes manufactured for both men and women) perfumes would be:

Montale's White Aoud
Detemer Fragrance Library's products
Armani's Prive Eau de Jade

I just tried Vera Wang "Princess" yesterday and I really liked it...I also tried Sarah Jessica Parker's "Lovely" which I found to be so much more refreshing than her other scent. I'll probably buy them on ebay b/c you usually can get good deals on perfumes there :woot:

Be careful of eBay. They may be cheaper but you more than likely will get burned on shipping, be sent a knockoff, or not get the product at all. There are good online perfume stores that may be a few bucks more but they make up for it in customer service.

ianastar and i wrote about that already. it's got nothing to do with marketing or unisex or not. americans just adapted the term "cologne" as fragrances for men and "perfume" as fragrances for women.

in reality cologne and perfume just mean different concentrations of actual fragrance oils in alcohol.

into kai recently, so fresh though it works for winter too. sort of over my artisan parfumer pepper stage, they just don't last long enough though their mimosa will go back into rotation in the spring...

I should have been more clear. I was referring to the differences in mens and womens scents. Perfumes are classified into mens and womens categories as a marketing ploy simply to make hetrosexual men more comfortable to the idea of wearing fragrances.

I am always very careful on ebay - I actually received both Vera Wang Princess & Lovely by SJP today in the mail :woot: Both are authentic and were never used.

wow... so many new ones (the way i know Austria, most of these won't make it here. airport, here we go!)

ED HARDY FRAGRANCE! YEAH!!!!

(i'm totally kidding, i wouldn't get anywhere near something associated with Ed Hardy.)

Thanks Annu for the list of fragrances coming in 2008, I have never seen a list like that before and it's awesome to know what to expect. I am particularly looking forward to Marc Jacobs additions to his Splash line in Pear Grapefruit and Basil!! I love his Violet and Amber Splashes :)

^oh, i haven't either, I just find it when I was searching something else. And I know that the list is not the best thing.. I live in the middle of nowhere and many of them will never release here. That makes me just angry to read them and everything.

Thanks for the list Annu! I'm quite excited for six of those:

Bond no. 9 Andy Warhol Union Square (Spring)
Chloe Chloe Eau de Parfum (February)
Guerlain Cruel Gardenia
Hermes new fragrance in Jardin series (Summer)
Serge Lutens Five O'Clock Au Gingembre (March)
Tom Ford fragrance for women (2008)

Though wow there are others that just seem quite frightening. Did the world really need (or want) a Jessica Simpson fragrance? Or a Jay-Z one? I even wonder about some of the remix scents - I always find those rather odd for the most part. There are exceptions of course - some better the original but most seem fairly derivative.

I really hope Chloe isn't just another generic fruity floral, I always have low expectations with designer scents but I'm really excited for this one. And here's to hoping the new Guerlain is better than Insolence, which somehow managed to smell like a dying bouquet on me.

There were a few things I wanted to scan for this thread - let me hop to it.

Wow, what a list thanks Annu!

There's a nice article about Frederic Malle in the new issue of Men's Vogue in which he talks about why he left France, his style and how he decorates his home and a little about his wife with pictures of their apartment.

^The new Chloe fragrance is meant to be more highend than the Chloe fragrance available at the moment in drugstores etc. There's a blurb about it in W magazine in the issue with Keira Knightley. According to W, its a "spicy yet soothing floral with pink pepper, peony, lychee and freesia notes, topped with a hint of powdery rose." At Saks.

The bottle looks very vintage and cute.

I'm really bored with all these reworks...the total lack of creativity (even with the names: eau this, le fleur that ... anyway can Salvatore Ferragamo drive this whole Incanto thing any further?)
Looking forward to smell the new JPG, Galliano and male Prada though.

^Hopefully the new Prada will be an improvement. I shower with soap, and it still smells better than this last effort... I would agree that fragrance houses and brands tend to remain in the same note family, and hopefully the new Dolce & Gabbana and Paul Smith won't be re-hashes of what's already out there.

the Chloe launch sounds so disappointingly formulaic; i'm tired of peppery fruity florals - virtually every fruity floral in 07 heavily relied upon pink pepper, besides YSL's latest, Elle (an insult to the house) consists of pink pepper, rose, lychee, freesia, peony... just like..Chloe?

By the way, speaking of Ferragamo's Incanto. I doubt anyone will know who this is, but Magibon the creepy white girl who pretends to be Japanese, wears Incanto.

^I agree for the most part. But I always try to sniff first. I'm not crazy about fruity anything. Althought the bottle would look very nice on my vanity.

I know.. but Pretty Nina sounds pretty good.
Nina Ricci has introduced a limited edition follow-up to 2006's Nina fragrance for women. The new scent, Pretty Nina, is a fresh fruity floral in which Nina "reveals a new chapter of her fairy tale":
The juice is fresher at the opening, with a grapefruit-caipirinha accord; and gentler at the heart, with fruity notes of green apple and raspberry melting with Sambac jasmine. The somewhat gourmand drydown blends apple wood, caramel, vanilla and musks.
Nina Ricci Pretty Nina is available in 50 ml Eau de Toilette. It can be found now at Sephora in France, and will presumably make its way to the US eventually.
