The Etc Etc of Perfumes & Fragrances

Frederic Malle has a lovely column in Allure every other month and I adore it - I adore him as well so I'm biased but the column is seriously quite nice. I'm going to have to look for his Men's Vogue article as well.

the Chloe launch sounds so disappointingly formulaic; i'm tired of peppery fruity florals - virtually every fruity floral in 07 heavily relied upon pink pepper, besides YSL's latest, Elle (an insult to the house) consists of pink pepper, rose, lychee, freesia, peony... just like..Chloe?

I could not agree more. There are too many generic releases when it comes to fragrance - everything smells remarkably similar. Fruity florals are aggravating at this point - I'm more interested in either full bodied florals or blends with amber, musk or spices. Fruity florals can be great when done right but too many flood the market lately.

Be careful of eBay. They may be cheaper but you more than likely will get burned on shipping, be sent a knockoff, or not get the product at all. There are good online perfume stores that may be a few bucks more but they make up for it in customer service.

yes this is sooo true! i got suckered when i bought Anna Sui Dollygirl on eBay. it said brand new in box and when i got it, it was not a sealed box and the bottle was only a 3/4 full! i was like "WTF??!".

( thanks for the lovely Malle column, Luxx :woot: )

PS: Additionally, today’s mainstream perfumery lacks originality: everyone is copying each other and the latest blockbuster in this tsunami of perfume releases. How did it come to that? Is there a way out? Many perfumers have admittedly become jaded, like Pierre Bourdon for instance.

CB: It came to that in exactly the same way that it came to the exact same thing in Hollywood: I once heard an MBA say to me, rather wearily, “The fundamental principle in business is: reduce risk.” Olivier Cresp did Light Blue for Dolce & Gabbana, and it is just wonderful and delightful, an innovative way of doing clarity as an aesthetic. Then he did Black XS, which was the same theme, and it was slightly less interesting, though still good. Then he did Ange ou Démon, and it was what it was: a copy of a copy. But what is Olivier to do? He’s done this hugely successful thing (that also happens to be very good), they ask him, “Hey, can you make us a Light Blue too?” They mean, usually, in sales figures, but sometimes they just say it: “Copy that!” What is he to do?"

:doh::ninja:

i buy all my perfumes from amazon uk once ive found one i like, it saves so much money, especially from everyday perfumes. in stores that sell 30ml for £40, i can get 100 and 200ml for the same price.

Balenciaga's Cristobal perfume is to die for, it's one of my favourites. I'm also a fan of Chanel Nº5, and Chopard's Wish perfume smells incredibly yummy. I don't have the perfume anymore, and it's embarassing to admit, but Britney's Curious lotion is really good too if you're on the run.

Is anybody else completely and helplessly in love with Carolina Herrera's CH? I know I am.

I'm about to buy a perfume but i have to choose between 2 [can't have them both]:
Coco by Chanel and Dior's Hypnotic Poison.
Which one would you recommend to an "old soul" that is looking for a sensual perfume?

Have you smelled both of them? I haven't tried Dior's HP but I know Coco smells amazing, classy and elegant so I'd recommend that one. Then again, I'm pretty biased.

I recommend you to test-wear them each a few times and see which one chooses you. :flower:

But if you want a blind recommendation - Chanel FTW!

I've smelled them both, they didn't have any testers to give me though [so i only got sprayed pieces of paper:judge:, the scent is still there though:blush: ].

I really enjoy Hypnotic Poison as a perfume, but the memories it conjures (an ex friend who I had an awful falling out with used to wear it) are not so good. So I'm gonna say the Chanel :D

Frederic Malle perfumes sound so lovely, I wish there was somewhere here I could test them! Perfume is so very expensive in Australia, sigh.

The paper strips really only hold the top notes; you need to wear the fragrances on your skin to really tell how much you like them (or not.)

I wish I took my own advice more often. :innocent:

MK moschino funny just came out in macys where i live and it smells so amazing! fresh

moon sparkle by escada is also really good the smell is amazing has anyone tried it yet?

^It feels like closing your eyes and breathing in the smell of a garden full of flower and fruit trees, but it's not overwhelming. It's a perfect combination of floral, citrus and oriental. It's a fragrance that makes me feel carefree and playful. The tv ad is true to the perfume's essence, I must add. ^_^

I LOVE Moon Sparkle. If you ever smelled Ibiza Hippie, you'll notice that when you compare it to Rockin' Rio, Sunset Heat, Pacific Paradise, et. al., you'll notice that it's bright but not as super-young. Moon Sparkle is more along the lines of those, it's definitely a "deeper" scent with the blackcurrant and some muskier tones. I got it right when it launched and I consider it a must-have.

^ well said :D
it sure is a must have everything about it is good the smell, bottle, ad, commercial i love it all

I know, paper strips are just so much easier :p
Sometimes I test many fragrances on my skin at same time and all that mix.. makes me sick or then I don't find which parfume I liked because I like mix
