The Face Thread, the Q's and A's about Foundations, Primers, Powders...

Just out of curioucity....now when this thread is too long, do we open a new one like we do with other threads?

And if suggestions are ok, I would like to suggest that we don't make a whole
thread on face and instead divide them into subcatagories :flower:

Hi Golden, thank you for your suggestion, I noticed that not all posters were happy about the whole threads-bunched-together, so I'm glad you asked, hopefully something that'll work to everybodys satifaction will be decided soon :flower: (I'll get back to you on that ;) )

My skin is a yellowish color and I have tried every foundation that is sold here and I can never find a foundation that matches perfectly or atleast close. Cliniques shell looked good when I was trying it in the store, but in natural light it is way too dark. Any suggestions?

im asian and have yellowish skin color as well and i use laura mercier's oil free foundation in the golden beige shade. maybe you can try that color or check out other shades that they have. it is a really, really good foundation, i might add

Foundation help

[font=Verdana, Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Okay I have been trying to find a really good foundation for about a month now. Between running to stores and reading tons of reviews I am so lost right now. At first i did not care but then I realized that it would be better if I got a department store brand like chanel b/c the drugstore brands are really bad for the skin. I have oily skin especially the t-zones. So I need something to take care of that.I also want medium to sheer coverage so I can layer and cover these acne scars(i don't have too many of them) . I am so confused right now, I have no idea what i want, or what I am looking for, or what will work. That is why I decided to post this. I have never use foundation before usally i just use powder, before I was sure of what I wanted but then I did some research and realised it was an awful product(covergirl trublend or something like that) especially for my skin. See I am a medium to dark skin tone deepending on the brand, so it is not exactly easy finding the right color with the right product. I was checking out some M.A.C stuff and some clinique. If anyone anyone can help me I would be so grateful. Not really looking for a specific brand, just need some help cause I am really stressed out.

Oh before you ask, of course I have been to makeupalley which is an amazing site, though it has added to my confussion

AWW it really is hard to find a good foundation since theres so many out there...right now I'm using several different foundations trying to find out what works best and I have them in different coverages and types from liquid to stick..

Is there a certain type you like?....

Since you meantioned it though, for a compact foundation I really like Chanel.

For the oilyness though you can try a primer that controls the oils on your face...

Some foundation already does that though...I think Armani makes one like that.

MAC and Stile have the best foundations I think.

Also if you don't have the money I've found that drugstore brands are ok as long as you mix them with some moisturizer (ones with Alpha Hydroxy Acids like the Peaches and Cream one from Kiss My Face are the best because it helps keep your pores from being clogged) beause they're all really heavy and thick.

I've used covergirl trublend and I liked it quite a bit actually, considering the price. It went on nicely. I'm pretty sure it's also non-comedogenic but don't take my word for it. >_>

L'oreal true match is also nice for a drugstore brand, especially pigment wise. The covergirl stuff looked a bit ashy at times? I don't know. It wasn't noticable after a few minutes. I'd say that the L'oreal foundation is better at controlling oil than covergirl but then I don't use foundation that much and when I do I think it's always good to finish it off with a tiny bit of powder!

Stila's line of tinter moisturisers are also nice and not very expensive, either, but they might leave you a bit shiney if you don't put on a little bit of powder after. They're good for evening skintone and covering minor scars, though, and it's also very light on the skin so pores don't get all clogged.

Hope that helped :)

Hi littleblackskirt,

Laura Mercier's oil free foundation goes on sheer, but if you reapply you can build up the coverage (without getting that "thick make-up look)..applying it takes a bit of getting used to (sponge and primer is a necessity imo) so if I were you I'd ask for a sample and have the SA apply it on your face.

Maybe T.LeClerc's Matte fluid foundation. It has a luminous effect. It should be well tolerated by anyone who has oily skin or rosacea or is acne-prone.

You might want to check through these threads as well :

Good Luck hunting for your foundation holy grail :flower:

Thanks guys for all the advice, you have no idea how much i appretiate this. Anyway I am thinking about useing Clinique instant pore perfector then Max Factor Colour adapt probaboly in rich mocha depends on how it looks on me.
Anyway thanx angain and if anyone can give some advice on the products I jut mentioned that would be great. :D

Do you try bobbi brown? The colour of foundation suits olive skin and medium colour. If you have oily, try light foundation and loose powder that has dry texture. Bourjois powder also good, its really fine.

I never wear full on makeup, but would like to start wearing a bit more (I'm only in high school.) I'm not sure where to start though..I just want a pretty even looking surface..that looks like I don't have a lot of make up on! I have really pale Irish skin w/ freckles..and I'm not sure about foundation/concealer..they're purpose etc.? lol any suggestions for good products? I also have really oily skin with big pores..any suggestions about that that aren't too expensive? thanks!

you should definetely start by going to a makeup counter & have them tell you what you should wear & what would be best for you. then decide what you'd like to get, & get it. try it out. clinique is pretty good for oily skin & combination skin. i use their foundation. i use mac foundation also, which is inexpensive too. it's whatevers up to you though. just, have fun with it!

I'm just wondering...what's the diffrence in buying a foundation oil-free and one
that's not ?

oil-free makeup doesn't contain oil that can possibly clog your pores & cause you to breakout. that's always the most important thing about makeup, whether or not it'll mess with your face. you know?

Most foundations are water based, not oil based anyway, but the ones that claim to be oil free have more adderence to the skin and more staying power, so better for oilier skins. But sometimes on a drier skin, these foundations can look flaky because dry skin need a more "moisty"/moisturizing foundation.

What kind of powder?

I want to give "illuminating" foundations like Armani Liquid Silk or Lancome Photogenic a try, but I don't want to look oily. What kind of powder to you use on top? Does powder defeat the purpose of foundation like that (ie, dull the radiance)?

Use a translucent loose powder. :)

Translucent powders don´t "take off" The glowyness of foundations. Just don´t forget to remove the excess powder with a large brush and don´t exagerate on the powder. ;)

need foundation help for wedding day

Generally I never wear foundation, however, I'm getting married in three weeks and the friend who's doing my make-up told me to get a foundation to match my skin tone for her to use.

I'm totally at a loss of where to start and what to get, especially since likely I'll only be using it once. that being said I'd rather get quality than something from the drugstore. I have a Sephora near me and also department stores with the standard MAC, Estee Lauder etc.
I'd also like something relatively natural looking... I'm pale with a bit of a summer tan and lots of freckles that I don't want to cover up.

any suggestions of what brands to start with or if any companies offer more cost effective trial sizes that i can buy?
