I don't know how much is scripted, but I have heard through a friend of a friend who does editing for MTV that a lot of things end up on the cutting room floor and the scenes are pieced together to make them more interesting. I think they are put in a lot of scenarios to make the show have more drama. Lauren even said that MTV had Heidi show up in lots of places that she was while they were filming season 3, so they could get some catfight scenes out of it. That being said, I don't think that the girls (minus Heidi maybe) act fake for the cameras or anything. It seems like they do a great job of forgetting they are there.

Yeah even if they do that, I think most of the girls act real. Although, I read somewhere that said that Audrina was basically "cast" for the role of Lauren's friend and they hung out and have become real life friends. But initially she was cast into the show because she wants to be an actress. I don't believe everything I read though..

I am watching the very first episode ever right now (my DVR recorded it on Noggin), and it has been ages since I saw it! I forgot about how Whitney and Lauren first met and about what a moron Heidi was during her admissions interview! All she kept saying was that she wanted to be a party girl. While Lauren was at her Teen Vogue interview, over-using the word "like", Heidi sat by the pool all day and "met" (I think it was orchestrated by MTV) Audrina. When Lauren came home, she was like, "I see you have been working hard all day, Heidi." Heidi said, "I have been recruiting friends for us!" I need to get season one on DVD. I forgot how great it was.

Here is Jason giving the show some publicity for its DVD release and season premiere.

Lauren Conrad’s ex-boyfriend, Jason Wahler, appeared on Stu Stone’s TSM radio last night, defending his former honey against attacks by frienemy Spencer Pratt and his gal pal, Heidi Montag.
While Wahler conceded that The Hills is pretty much all fake, the drama off the show between LC and the duo of Spencer and Heidi is all too real.
Perez called in to the show and grilled Wahler, and Jason had a chance to express his side of the story, even touching on the rumored sex tape between him and Lauren.
Wahler denied that any sex tape existed (or even a “fooling around” tape) and he took Pratt up on his challenge of taking a public lie detector test.
Will Spencer accept????
We’d love to see these two take a test and find out once and for all who is lying about this sex tape business!

OMG Noggin is re-showing season 1 episodes? I've been dying to find re-runs but all I ever see MTV air is s2.

I love that season, I need to buy it too. It's one of those shows that I could re-watch even though I already know what happens.

Lauren, Lo and AUdrina look fantastic!!!
Heidi looks like a ****** in that dress, she just looks awful. she used to look so cute in season 1 and now she's totally gone downhill. Her crappy personality helps her though!
And Spencer- what a low life, i can't believe him! If I were Lauren I'd refuse to do the Hills if he was in it, after what he said about her. That's beyond low.

^ No, I honestly think she looks bad too. I would say the same about Lauren if she wore half the stuff Heidi does. I don't think Heidi is ugly as in completely gross looking, but I thought she was much prettier before her facial surgery.

I always thought that Heidi was pretty and I still do, but she ruins herself with that style (not to mention the surgery)- I'm not really keen on anything she wears; and it's not like there's an inherent trashiness in her which can't be helped- she could just as well class herself up a bit, but as cosmogrl said, she just makes herself look cheap sometimes..and that can't be forgiven!!!
