^^^ If you haven't seen the masterful The Deer Hunter, then you must. One of the best films ever.

Parasite.

Jeez.. there should be a website that rates movies with blood drops instead of stars so I know what I’m getting into (and can go with 0.5 to 1 lol).. blood is really not my trip , but trying to put that aside, or just trying to rationalize it, it’s completely justifiable and the way the story is layered is excellent.. all fun and games until it gets heartbreaking. That chill detachment vs. hardship is so easy but somehow worlds apart in terms of how we decide to exercise empathy. The end couldn’t be truer for most.

Also it made me SO hungry.. a yummy bowl of noodles should be mandatory in every movie.

Simply one of the bestest films this year. (This and Joker, are my favs thus far.)

I’m sure Hollywood will snatch it up for an American-remake soon, but will likely not come close to Bong's brand of darkly-macabre comedic sensibility, richly wallowing in despair and misery. Korean films have this effortless sensibility to conjure a morbidly dark comedic tone in tragedy— and vice versa (The Treacherous being one of my favs marinating in that tone). There’s something so endearing, uplifting and noble in just how sad the film’s family acquires their short-lived comfort and security— and how the son’s plan to redeem and free his father in the end. I genuinely LOL and felt heartbroken at once. Korean directors are some of the best storytellers working right now in the film industry. I hope they never become tempted or afflicted with the Hollywood virus.

I officially can’t stand that Timothee person now. The King was a huge letdown. Besides Timmy being his usual twatty-self, the production looked so unforgivably cheap. I can’t tolerate cheapness from period films. Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth was made on a shoestring budget, but the sprawling and flourishing creativity that reigns over every single scene is speechlessly stunning, I weep in glory of such vision.)

A Million Little Pieces.

Most pointless film I’ve seen in a very long time. Nothing is revealed about James Frey other than he’s been drawn to alcohol and drugs from 10yo and continue to be a selfish jerk until he decided to become a decent person during his final rehab treatment. It’s always been hard for me to sympathize with these American stories of upper middle-class individuals that become self-destructive addicts because for whatever reason they're not satisfied with their privileged lives. Many people from other countries suffer much much much worse circumstances and tragedies and get through it without resorting to substance dependence. Western countries— especially North America, are so spoiled in their vices I just can’t muster the feels. Join a humanitarian group and contribute to something constructive if you have no ambition to pursue something meaningful in your life rather than feel sorry for yourself. All the characters in this story were crap… Suffered through this solely for Aaron and Charlie— what a gorgeous couple they’d make...

Last year’s A Prayer Before Dawn (unfortunate sappy title that may have repelled many people from seeing it), the true story of an English addict kickboxer incarcerated in Thailand’s most notorious prison and his redemption is so much a better story and film than this James person’s experience in a pampered Minnesota rehab.

me from telling a difference but I found it accessible, which I’m sure is never a good sign ).. please don’t say the costumes, ever enjoyed a movie primarily for using the same box of buttons and then for the story? cause I certainly did!

The rest of the cast is very solid. I won’t deny my weakness for Joel— even as a grizzly older-than-he-looks bloated haggard bear here (...yum...), and Lily Rose is such a scenestealer, she’s improving so much from her awful debut Yoga Hosers (I loathe anything Kevin Smith). But overall, the costumes look like my most-dreaded Rick Owens looks of long, baggy tees and henleys worn with leather tights and combat boots styling. And the action set of the infamous Battle of Agincourt looks so BBC circa early-90s production: Cheap and flat. I’m not expecting Game Of Thrones "Battle Of The Bastards" glorious production— but this film’s action set pieces are inexcusably cosplay-at-the-park. And then the comedy of Robert slipping-and-sliding in his armour… (Haha…ha…ha…)

Once again, it all goes back to Timmy. He’s just so douchey in everything he’s in (with the reality of such a twinky-built guy would have been squashed had he really lived during that unforgiving period). I guess that girls adore him is enough for him to keep being hyped and ruining solid films (like the very likeable Hot Summer Nights). I’d rather see Shawn Mendes on film if it’s about who’s most popular with girls, frankly.

rewatched The Last Jedi. I like the cinematography and costume design. The music.

I have Showtime finally so I will watch the Deer Hunter this weekend. I like Robert De Niro in his early career especially. Been wanting to watch Casino also.

lol god that's gross, Rick and his fans could only dream!... I saw no man boobs during the movie, which is what you get with that long tshirt+compact chubby leg+astronaut sneaker look that he favors. I see it more leaning towards Haider's work, which I'm not a fan of either but I acknowledge it's.. good?. The floral dress worn by the pub woman is also very Dries in the early 00s (before we had to see every flower he's grown in every garment).

I think Timothee is a good actor (and as a bonus, probably the only man in Hollywood, next to Robert Pattison, who knows how to dress and not just to look good).. but, as much as I would like to blame it on the hype or the fans, he struggles with what Robert Pattison (and any other Hollywood "heartthrob") did: not knowing how to truly abandon themselves and keeping this latent vanity or consciousness or who knows of how their character may be suffering/livid/throwing up but it's still not not cute because they know they're cute (makes sense?). It's not hard to see past that as a viewer but it's still a requirement and it shouldn't be. You see this minor obstacle appearing in all entertainers when a teenage fandom skyrockets their fame. The good news is that with enough work, good training (which Timothee has) and then more age, they easily move on from these Zoolander tendencies.. Leonardo, Justin Timberlake, even Robert, they all did..

^^^ He’s a very capable actor, I don’t deny that (…not sure about Justin Timberlake, tho…). As a hater, I just can’t stand him LOL

He’s a lot like Ryan Gosling in how he’s perceived and hyped— both with his talent and his reputation with stanning girls/women. Except I like Ryan. Favs like The Place Beyond The Pines, Only God Forgives and Blade Runner 2049 would be absolutely ruined for me if it were with him instead of Ryan.

If you haven’t seen Angel Heart, another great one with Robert worth the time— although he’s not the lead. But Mickey Rourke, Robert, and an unbelievably stunning-looking Lisa Bonet are all solid. Too bad she never bothered to star in any feature film after this debut. Such a great film.

Finally got around to Marriage Story yesterday while making dinner. I figured that I may as well do something else in the background because how good could it really be? It starred Hollywood's honorary Asian and trans actress, then there's Adam who always had me on the fence - hot and slacker-ish from afar but not so much up close, and lastly, that schmaltzy Disney music/narration intro. Big mistake, because after that intro it really grips you and as a result, I've ruined a perfectly decent tuna steak and fresh peas, but had perfect mash.

Noah does what he does best with Marriage Story, and at times I had to look away, trying to pick at my nails despite watching it on my own. Because the scenes, especially Adam's, just made me squirm so much. Just felt so invasive, as a viewer. And now I recall the same sort of experience when I watched Margot at the Wedding....

As for the story, I think it more than anything showed how falling into a routine can blind one in so many ways that you lose track of people and how they can change. And that just because things are never verbalised doesn't mean they don't exist. You can tell, purely by how he's catching up to a 'game' which he never anticipated would get that nasty let alone that he'd ever get divorced.
But I was probably more keen on the nitty-gritty of divorcing in America. From 'getting served' to the living logistics to the NY/LA parallels, the annoying 'child assessor' whose bias was visible on her face, and how dirty it got with Renata Klein and Ray Liotta! Also, Noah Baumbach's subdued sexism eventually grew more pronounced as the film went on. Especially when you compare the little monologue Scarlett got during the session with her lawyer which was basically the extent we saw to her character while Adam had the entire movie to show us naive and layered he was. Then there was Renata taking her jacket off in court to reveal a lingerie-type look with cleavage. That was terribly outdated and showed a nasty side to Baumbach.

It's definitely Adam's best performance I've seen and that's got nothing to do with sympathy. That epic scene where they shout unpleasantries were deep, but his performance seemed way more authentic. The naivety, the rage, the ridiculousness, and he looked more miserable than Keanu - Driver really nailed it.

Also, no to People's SMA. You don't want to be in the same conversation as douchebags like The Rock, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.

Sometimes I wonder at amazement of why there’s even an audience for what can be such an unpleasant, and engagingly archaic event in anyone’s life. It’s like a dedicated film about crippling depression playing it straight… Misery absolutely loves company, I suppose. (Or bland people that desperately need to identify with some Hollywood story so that they can feel some drama in their otherwise uneventful lives.)

Two of my closest friends went through the divorce procedure and I unwillingly became that person they ran to when things got so despairingly hopeless and also downright nasty: The meanness, the coldness, the savagery and the outright lack of compassion and just simple absence of humanity that a human can express for another human that they shared a home and life with just astounds me to near depression— from both sides. I can’t imagine they’d sit through a film about such a subject.

I think that was just LA haha, I've been to court a few times and lived a few blocks from the superior court too.. it's seriously exactly like that.. starting with the fact that he actually filmed there, then the unimpressed judges who look like they're so done with it all before it even starts, the exploited house workers struggling to catch up with their translator, the typical Rodeo Drive character that walks in looking like she's had every surgery work done on her face, white see-through lycra pants and neon green platforms and turns out she IS the attorney, the sassy men like Adam's attorney who are so loud, mean and shark-ish even just to order their coffee across the street. I've never attended a case anywhere else to be honest, but I thought Laura Dern's depiction of Laura Wasser was.. fair.

I just cannot get past of how Noah minimized his long and clearly very serious affair (since it's now a relationship) almost to no existence.. and he really pushes his luck with how the 'assistant' literally pursues him and he's like 'excuse me! I'm STILL a married man'.. so honorable . And don't get me started on the 'I wasted my hot 20s for you!' rant. That's nice about directing I guess.. you can tell your version of events any way you want it.

Only a Phuel fool would willingly insert themself into that situation. I suspect it has something to do with some sort of personal challenge, rooted in vanity, to pat themselves on the shoulder over how nice/evolved they are? Or just greediness to get both the perks. The idea of remaining friends with a divorced couple is a myth. Same applies to those who believe in maintaining a meaningful friendship with your ex. It won't ever be the same, so just keep it cordial, and move on. My divorce will likely be like that Latino couple yelling at each other in the hallway, getting restrained by their lawyers, lol.
Nicole's mum in the movie proved that it's not a sustainable idea for the friend. There will be moments when the other person will be thrashed in your presence and you can laugh it off as banter, but people are not supposed to talk thrash about your friends in your presence and you're not supposed to keep quiet when that happens either.

Yes, the affair, lol. The way that was diminished and blame-shifted was hilarious. 'I cheated on you because you stopped having sex with me. There's so much (more) I could've done'. Classy. Also, LA! They may have all that 'space', but apparently all that space is actually filled with greed, vanity and loneliness. Like I've said before, that city should be razed to the ground.

I didn't know this was a semi-autobiographical recount until I read your first post, and now the idea to make a movie about this feels so.....entitled. Don't care whether it was co-signed or not (I doubt it, btw) because ultimately it ended up through a single vision.

Like a friend that got to know your partner through you and you break up but they still remain friends? that's not a friend, that's a codeless vulture with a reserved VIP seat in hell, esp. if both have the same orientation.. likely cut from the same cloth anyways. I've never experienced that thankfully.. I'm actually in amicable terms with all of my exes but friends/family are good quality too.

Lol at your fiery divorce. Wonder what kind I'll have!. I think these contracts need to come with a expiration date that's easy to renew before time's up. That way you can just separate and let that thing die off without further interaction. That would be more up my alley. But kids change everything I guess.. just the idea of having to fight custody for my cat is too horrible to think, so a child.. I'd just let my Mars in Scorpio take the wheel.

Yes, they were 2 marriages falling apart, and I was not close with their husbands at all. Both were devastating to see unfold, although no one was innocent. People can be so cruel (both parties) to someone that they supposedly loved once. If their stories were made into a Woody Allen-esque film, I could see it being witty and clever in all its frailties But if it were told and sold straight, it would be so draining and fatiguing— I really do wonder what’s the point???? To watch someone suffer??? I don’t know if that’s the tone of A Marriage Story, but if it is played straight… Maybe it’ll serve as a good cautionary tale for anyone who’s desperate to be tied to the marriage institution despite all the warning signs of incompatibility screaming at them.

Anyway, Uncut Gems is a stunner from start to finish. Never thought a film that involves the NBA, gambling, unlikeable people and... Adam Sandler would be so riveting from the moment it started to the ending.

Highly recommended for the outsiders like me who so confused on the s*tshow that went down between Brazil calling the shots on how to move on from oil to Brazil is now in populist limbo. It made me so angry and sad.. and honestly, never underestimate your as*hole neighbor, your classicist/racist/sexist relatives, that jerk in the office who treats the cleaning staff dismissively, the loud people in restaurants, they all gather given the right circumstances, can cast a vote too and may burn a country to the ground.

On a lighter note.. I never knew my dream house just happened to be the presidential palace of Brazil . Should've played my cards wisely when I lived close by.

With my gay bestie, because obviously. I'm not even one of those who fawn over likes of Liz Taylor, Marilyn, and Judy Garland, and the fascination around her was always a bit of a mystery to me. But I do think this film sort of touched on the connection she had with homosexual men of that era. The OTT campiness, the drama, the double life, the loneliness. This entire film is filled with so much non-verbal sadness and Renee Zellweger really pulled this off like a pro with all the mannerism. But she just about carries the entire story on her own because nobody else makes an impact.

Not something I would recommend to those who get easily misty-eyed, but definitely worth watching!

I may watch this film one day if only for Renee looking amazingly and hauntingly like her without devolving into a caricature… unlike that guy who portrayed Freddie Mercury and ended up with an Oscar for that dreadful performance and neutered film … LOL???? It seemed more about the Academy showboating the actor's ethnicity than his performance. I really thought his performance was meant to be a joke— like a PG-rated Austin Powers sendup that the family can watch and sing along with. But it was really meant to be serious and people really thought he was good? The stupid exaggerated bucktooth was insulting: Freddie’s were never that prominent. The worst part is that there were actually people out there who applauded that movie! Cannot get over that. People just have no taste at all. But then that film was likely made for the People magazine reader! As for his Oscar win, I refuse to acknowledge it for the very reason you've just stated. The idea that some mediocre tv actor suddenly delivered an award-winning performance is a stretch. His win was based on identity politics, plain and simple.

Saw Bombshell, and I'm convinced Charlize Theron is now a worthy opponent for Renee Zellweger in Judy. She completely disappeared into Megyn Kelly and as someone who watched that mess unfold from the start, it was like watching the actual saga play out by the original subjects. The entire film is highbrow escapism and very believable many will obviously have an opinion on how it's being played out. It also succeeds in making Kelly look good just like The Morning Show made me sympathise with Aniston's flawed character, which to be honest is a feat. The rest of the cast is pretty solid as well and suddenly I'm beginning to appreciate the effort these films make to have the cast fit the bill visually, above all else. In this case, as well as Judy, it actually made digesting the storyline way more easier.
But.....I saw the movie with the worst type of moviegoers one can imagine. They type with not so much an ounce of basic etiquette. As in, bickering over seat numbers even though they were in the wrong, message notifications going off full blast, having audible conversations with people two seats away from them 'Oh, is this based on a true story?' - I'm sorry how do you see a move like Bombshell on impulse??, running commentary, and one guy literally giggled during Kayla's awkward sexual harassment scene! I was convinced the cinema was infiltrated by a bunch of trolls. Can it be possible for these cretins to be so devoid of any form of sensitivity? Or is it just that they really ought to have been in Bad Boys 2 showing next door? Sorry for the rant, lol, but maybe it's time for me to start going back to matinees with the oldies.
