The MAC Makeup Thread

Are their mascara's any good? Because I want natural looking eyelashes that only look like I have a bit on but whenever I get mascara it always looks like I have put it on. Does anyone get what I mean?

^ I would not buy face and body. It does have a high oil content so it may make you break out. Also if you are looking for any coverage, I'd go for something else as face and body has practically no coverage.

Are we talking about the same foundation? F&B is water-based and contains only one oil at the bottom pf the ingredients list. It isn't oil that maked acne-prone skin break out anyway, so I don't see how that is relevant either way.

It is my favourite foundation in the entire world. Once you learn how to use it (many people just don't get it), it gives you totally flawless skin. and it is actually waterproof. I've never had a single breakout from this, but most MAC foundations and pressed powders cause breakouts...and their primer too, it made my skin look really disgusting. I might react to some of the silicones? Who knows. I've never reacted to dimethicone in F&B though.

Oh, and can't recommend their mascaras at all A MUA used one of their mascaras on me...never again, hell no!

Uhm. Because it was really bad. The worst mascara I've ever tried...my lashes clumped completely together, they went stick-straight even though I curled my lashes and the mascara dried so hard. I looked like an idiot. Cannot recommend MAC mascaras to anyone.

I have to say, their Face and Body breaks me out terribly, I think thats due to the waterproof nature meaning you can't get it out of your pores perhaps.

Again, I could be using it wrong, I tried the buffing method I saw on you tube...

^I don't buff it on, I sort of dab it on. I don't like that "foundation-look" on my skin, and I think buffing it on does just that. I apply it with my fingers or a foundation brush, then I wet my foundation brush slightlly and dab it on to help make the film form. But I do get clogged pores when I buff it on. Probably because it won't let your skin breathe if you sort of push it into your skin...it's not the oil though, it's the fact that it forms a film and becomes waterproof.

I am actually a makeup artist and studied makeup chemistry, and do use the face and body foundation alot and know how to properly use it. I think it's great for people that have good skin and don't need much coverage, not so much for people that have sensitive skin or skin that is prone to break outs. Many people I have use it on (including myself) complain of more breakouts and people with sensitivity at times feel stinging as it does have a grapefruit extract in it that some peoples skin may react to. It may not have oil as one of the main ingredients and is water based but but it does still have a bit of oil (you can run a separation test and see how the foundation separates into water and oil, you will be quite surprised). And yes overproduction of oil or overuse of oily products does cause break outs. I struggled with acne prone skin when I was younger and have been advised by dermatologists all my life.
I have the same problem with many primers, I react to the silicones It makes my skin hook rough and bumpy

Oil does not clog your pores...there is just no way it does. If your skin is acne-prone it means that your skin is prone to infections. Oil does not cause infection and oil does not block the pores.

But for some reason MAC foundations seem to break a lot of people out, and I don't know it the silicones block the pores or if people are just sensitive to them (my scalp f*cks up if I come near it with anything containing silicones ), but I can't even use their MSF without getting really bad skin.

The thing about F&B that I don't get is why they put that citrus extract in it? What is that supposed to do? And I don't get why they added oil either, they could have added a different emollient. It does separate at high temperatures, which is rather stupid. Nonetheless it has never broken me out after I stopped buffing it in to my skin, and IMO it's the best foundation I've ever used.

Actually for no reason I've been very sceptical to MAC's products other than their eyeshadows..I've heard that a lot of ppl don't like their foundation tho, but I've never tried it myself

The hair follicles, or pores, in your skin contain sebaceous glands. These glands make sebum, which is an oil that lubricates your hair and skin. Most of the time, the sebaceous glands make the right amount of sebum. As a teen's body begins to mature and develop, though, hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to make more sebum, and the glands may become overactive. Pores become clogged if there is too much sebum and too many dead skin cells. Bacteria can then get trapped inside the pores and multiply, causing swelling and redness — the start of acne. So yes overproduction of oil does cause acne, but it is not the only thing that does.

I'm saying it can increase the sebum on the skin that is not needed. That is why people prone to acne use oil free moisturizers. And yes some foundations can make it hard for your skin to breathe if they are not noncomedogenic.

It definitely does, but it has more to do with the fact that it's waterproof than anything else. Oil does not cause acne. You can have oily skin and no acne, and you can have dry skin and acne. Some people have pores that aren't very good at getting rid of dead skin cells just as helen-rox said, and some people have a tendency to get infections in the skin (the bacteria on the skin itself are not harmful and do not cause infection). But oil does not cause acne, though it's a sign that the glands are overproducing oil. And you def don't want to put anything super pore clogging on oily skin

But then again...everything you put on your skin does clog the pores, some ingredients are way worse than others though. I like that the F&B forms a waterproof film, it keeps my from getting dry during the day I will say, though, that it's nearly impossible to put a thick layer of F&B on your face, which is probably why it doesn't break me out.

^Yes exactly what I was trying to explain... Obviously there are other factors to acne prone skin and not everyone that has oily skin has acne. But if you do have acne prone skin due to overproduction of oil you should steer away from products that contain oil.

Not neccessarily, I've had Plushlash and I loved it.
They've gotten pretty expensive though, I bought Plushlash 2 years ago for €12 and now they're €16! Crazy.

the 224 is really brilliant. i have a few supposed dupes, but none of them cut it. i would have been better off buying additional 224s.

Thanks so much for your opinions on Mac's F&B.

I only plan on using a little bit of the white to mix in with my regular oil-free foundation. I wish there was a white oil-free foundation, but this is the only white foundation I know of!

^I think Chanel has one too...or is that a base? I'm pretty sure that they have a white base, but it's probably not oil-free. The thing you can do is try to not put moisturizer on your oily areas if you're wearing foundation

I bought their Mineralize Satinfinish spf 15 foundation the other day, not because I need foundation but because I wanted one that would give me a rather fresh, dewy face (my other foundations all give a matte finish..). I've used it for 2 days now and I really love how it feels on my skin. It's less moist than face and body (which felt too sticky for me) but doesn't dry entirely as other foundations usually do. It has a tiny bit of shimmer in it, but it's so subtle it's almost not noticeable. Believe me, I usually shy away from anything that contains too much shimmer/sparkles, even for eyeshadows I prefer matte . I do powder my t-zone because I don't want to look dewy all over my face and because I tend to get oily there..
My skin looked rather dull lately and I'm very happy with this foundation! I hope I won't break out in a few days .
