The MAC Makeup Thread

thanks for the pics and info. I really like the mutiny pigment, everything else I can live without.

I'm confused about these beauty powders - they're pink but arent they supposed to be used all over your face? how are the beauty powders different than beauty powder blush?

Also does anyone know the difference between the msf natural, select sheer, mystery powder, or set powder? they all seem the same to me. I'm using msf natural right now on top of studio tech to set it, absorb oil and to kind of give that soft airbrushed look but I'm wondering if maybe one of the others would be better for that.
As far as the powders go, Select Sheer is going to be your typical sheer finishing powder, MSFN is mineralized, Sheer Mystery is a sheer matte powder with a bit of sheen (I believe), and Invisible Set (which is a pro product) is a colourless way to set things. I think you're good with MSFN...Sheer Mystery I don't have a ton of experience with.

As far as the beauty powders go, you can use them as a blush if you are a colour-phobe when it comes to your cheeks, or you can buff it all over the face to give it a sort of glow. These will be really nice to give the face an all-over pinkish glow; I have Alpha Girl and I mainly love it as a blush in the summer, and Pretty Baby is nice all over. I don't get a ton of mileage out of Pretty Baby at least by using a blush brush, I recommend a 181 or better yet, 182. The Beauty Powder Blush takes the idea of the Beauty Powder-a sheer coloured powder-and turns it into a blush. With the BPB, you're going to get a sheerer, more pearlescent colour payoff. Style Warriors is going to have two of them, so I can see the BPB becoming permanent eventually.

As far as the SA's not knowing what they are doing-let's just say I'm used to that. I feel like half the time, I know more about what should be done than they do!

Trista thanks so much for clearing it up! Your awesome :flower:

Another question - I just got my hk brush set today and couldnt wait to try the 187 after everything I've heard about it. I like it but it seems the same as my 182. I use studio tech, msf, msfn, beauty powder and creme blush - is one brush better than the other for any of these products or are they pretty much the same?

The main difference is that the 187 is a stippling brush, so it's good for applying darker products or bronzers. A lot of people love it for Mineralize products. The 182 is good for Beauty Powders and MSFN...I have used my 181 with some of the shimmer MSF's and I find that it makes it like a pile of glitter on my face, so a 187 would be better for that. From now on I would avoid the brush sets though...they have really gone downhill in quality. The last good one was the Colour Forms brush set...so I would suggest that if you want a brush set get them at the Nordie's anniversary event.

As far as blushcreme goes, a lot of people just use their fingers, but many will also use the 188.

When it comes to shimmer MSF shades, which ones do you have? I actually find that a 181 or 182 is really good with So Ceylon, so it would be good for the less glittery ones. I also am interested in trying it as an all-over face powder of sorts during the summer, when my skin darkens up significantly.

You may want to look into a 109 if you are wondering about face brushes. I do not own it yet (it is a MAC store-exclusive), but it's a smaller head so it would be good with a darker colour. As an example, I would use it with a bit of Devil and sweep it along the cheekbone, but just a little bit. Then I would buff with a Beauty Powder to kind of sheer it down and to even things out to make my skin look perfect.

Picked up a couple things today ... CremeSheen Glass Looks Like Sin (with my b2m), and Fleur Power blush. Hopefully these are the last two components of my spring makeup look, which is meant to be a subtle, French-style makeup (the opposite of what I & probably all other MAC regulars usually wear :p). The rest is Pincurl and Dovefeather eyeshadows (which I heard today had been discontinued--it's a gorgeous color I think), and Capricious lustre lipstick.

PS Forgot to ask, I need a nail polish recommendation. I like light colors on my hands ... when MAC discontinued Venus I stocked up, and still have some. It's probably my all-time favorite. It was the closest I could come to matching a grey pearl I have. I also like Resortware, but I'm ready for something new. Any ideas?

^Many ULTA stores still have the OPI India collection stuff, so Moon over Mumbai might be a good one. Also a nice light that I like, while not grey, is Kyoto Pearl. They aren't MAC, but they're my best suggestions.

As for my spring look, I am not planning on really doing anything different. I have a lot of pastels already, and lavender lipstick reminds me of my 8th grade year when I definitely rocked the lavender. I MAY eventually get Fashion Mews, if the counters still have it, because it is a glaze.

Trista thanks for the brush help! After playing around with it more I've pretty much retired the 182 for the 187.

I'm kind of embarrassed to admit I ordered the kitty kouture mystery powder. It's way overpriced but it comes with a refill so I guess it's not too horrible. I'm curious to try it, I've read really good things about it. I think it'll replace my MSFN.

See I am praying that the Kouture powder will end up at the outlet-a lot less people are going to be getting them. I mean, $28 for a Dazzleglass and $90 for a powder? I am going to hit the outlet monthly once I get some money because I have a feeling that it will end up there. I'm more concerned with getting the Sugarsweet MSF's.

The thing about the HK brush set is that the quality is way below that of the normal brushes, so I have a feeling you will want to invest in the full-size one next. They are each good for their own things, but you will want to use the 182 with the Sheer Mystery powder.

Oh and Cute-Ster got restocked on the website...

So the MUA at MAC wasn't too shabby...she was an actual MUA who works on TV and then MAC part time. I never ever wear eyeshadow, but it was rather interesting to try. And it wasn't too complicated. Excuse the messy hair, I was so beat. One of the models didn't show up so I had to walk a million times and change really quickly. Modelling is definately not something I wanna do full time

The lady prepped my eyes with something (lol), and then the good old black kohl smudged all over the place. She used Print all the way up to the globe line. She used Mylar in the browbone and Pincurl for highlighting. Well, it was pretty hard to see what she did, had my eyes closed for the most of the time...She put some ugly orange stuff on my cheeks (some call it peach, but it really is orange. Yuck) and she wasn't too handy with their mineral foundation (too dark). She used Myth and Ever so Rich on my lips, and it looked fantastic! It had worn off by the time I got home though. And, well, the mascaras sucks. I had curled my lashes, she applied some mascara, and what do you know - lashes were back to very short and pin straight right away.

But hey, every brand can't be perfect...I think it looked pretty good for all it's flaws.

It looks okay to me...

I'm not a fan of MAC's mascaras. I find that Zoom Lash is atrocious-I can't get any mascara on my lashes half the time with that brush, and it clumps like no other. I haven't tried a ton of them out but I definitely don't hear great things about them. I will try Dazzlelash eventually, though...but my hopes aren't too high. Besides, I have my Victoria's Secret mascara which I absolutely LOVE.

^My lashes feel so stiff. I keep postponing taking my makeup off because I know it will take forever. I think she used Zoomlash on me...never again. I'll stick to cheapo Maybelline.

I would give Lancome's Definicils Pro a try. It's one of my personal favourite mascaras, and it has a curved brush, so I find I get a bit of curl when I apply. Also try their Cils Booster, I swear by it and cannot, CANNOT, live without it.

Ida, that eye makeup looks great, you should get the colours they used ^_^

I've also heard really good things about the Shiseido mascara base for my Asian eyelashes that just wont curl (even though the rest of me is pretty Scandinavian...)

I've always wanted to try Definicils, but mascara is so god damn expensive in Denmark. The good ones are about $40

miu miu I like the colours too, but I really think the whole thing was too matte. I'd love something similar with more shimmer, and maybe a bit more sheer.

As far as good cheaper mascaras go, do you have access to Avon? They have mascaras that are along the same prices as drugstore ones (with how expensive drugstore makeup is getting), but are comparable to, and even better than, many high-end mascaras.

I actually like the orange-y cheek colour on you-there are some people that can pull it off (like me) but they are few and far between. I have a feeling she used Fun & Games blush on you since that is kind of orange-y...when I had it used on me it looked amazing. As for a more shimmery colour, you can go with Dark Soul pigment (which is a true black), or you can go lighter with something like Beauty Marked (dark black-plum with red shimmer). As far as a highlight goes, I swear by Crystal Avalanche.

^I don't have access to Avon :( And if I did, it would be just as expensive as everything else because of the f*cked up taxes we pay here.

Dark Soul looks yummy, I must say... :shifty:

Dark Soul is too dark of a pigment for me, personally, but Teal is a real nice darker one. The thing with it is that it does stain the skin a bit...so I rarely ever reach for it. I really wish that Royal Flush pigment was made permanent though, it's one of my staple pigments.

Oh, and MAC just put the Grand Duos up on the website. There's 7 of them-they are Mineralize Blush duos, and some of them (notably Earth to Earth) ended up on the fall runway looks. I want them all.

I like the light blue-pink duo blush but thats the color I always go for so it would end up looking like everything else I have.

I got the hk mystery powder and returned it. The compact is very cute and well made and I really wanted to love the powder. When touching the powder directly with my finger, it did feel really soft. On the skin I couldnt tell the difference between MSKN and the mystery powder except that it was just a tiny bit too dark for my skin. My bf didnt see it so maybe it's my imagination but I think it exentuated the little dark spots I have from old zits. I wouldve kept it if it just matched my skin because the compact is so cute.

does anyone know if your not allowed to use offical mac pics in ebay auctions? I tried to sell the 239 brush from the hk set and my listing got taken down due to copyright but I thought we're allowed to use their pics.
