I have not found a thread about this and I think it's an important item for design, who it's no only a communication and functional discipline but also technological and artistic.

Bionics: is the application of biological methods and systems found in nature to the study and design of engineering systems and modern technology.Wikipedia

I only know those collections inspired in bionics but I would love to know more, and to hold all them in this thread.

Note: It would be nice if we put the piece of design in the left and the biological organism in the right

Oh great topic! Those photos are really cool! I love the Dior!
Somebody should make a thread about led fashion and all those hi tech!

Thierry Mugler made a collection inspired by insects, but I don't remember the season, maybe someone with catwalking.com password could search for it?

great topic!

when i have more time i will post some examples i can think of.

i think one of the campaigns for comme des garcons's "dress becomes body..." shows close-ups of the clothes next to similar images from nature.

here are some claude montana sunglasses:

i wonder if this topic should go in the "fashion in depth" forum otherwise it may get buried here.

aside from les insectes, the collection mentioned and shown by perickles, i think mugler used insects as inspiration quite often throughout his career.

i hate to nit pick...
:ninja:
*especially since i really like the direction of this thread...
but bionics would seem to me to be more about technology and engineering...
ie- the bionic man or woman...

these designs seem to be inspired by biological elements...
but i don't think a dress that has the colours of a butterfly can be called bionic...
:ermm:...

HUSSEIN CHALAYAN is the only designer i can think of that has used bionics in fashion...
ie- his shape shifting dresses...

i think we need to clarify the title of the thread here...

how about "forms of nature"

inspired by this lovely book...
and maybe qualified with "forms in fashion"

lovely topic, one of my faves

It isn't only for the colours of a butterfly just see the wings of course they don't fly because a dress doesn't need to do that...but a buttefly is a biological organism, all people think bionics can be only technological because It was primarily used by this discipline but design can apply the same concept

I don't like that butterfly dress either and I love chalayan also but I want to be a supporter of unknown designers also, they deserve protagonism also because famous designers and fashion houses have a lot of money and they can do anyything they want and poor designers just can survive

i wasn't saying i like or don't like the butterfly dress...
only that i think that the definition of this word does not mean what you think it means...
at least not in english, as far as i know...

the definition you posted even speaks to the tech aspect of the meaning of the word...
it's not the same as biology...
which i think is more what you are really showing here with these examples...

biology...
so maybe it's bio-fashion?
(like biochemistry)?

:flower:

I don't know at least where I study design people called this bionics (biónica) for example engeneering students they study about use of radar (as dolphines and bats) to know the context where a submarine is navigating, industrial designers apply the same concept to resolve problems of their area which are different as well fashion designers
