Bear Grylls: "Adventure is the only thing I've ever been good at"

Having built a billion-strong following worldwide, TV's former-SAS survivalist comes in from the wild to face his toughest challenge yet. GQ's savage inquisitor Alastair Campbell grills Grylls on killer determination, and how public nudity helped him meet his wife.

Here are some photographs from his cover shoot in the February 2015 issue of British GQ, as well as some of the best quotes from Campbell's interview:

How he describes himself:

"Adventure is the only thing I've ever been good at, and I am super lucky to have made a career out of getting muddy falling out of trees."

On meeting his wife:

"I was up on the north coast of Scotland, staying with a friend, and every New Year, wherever I am, I swim, and I knew it was going to be cold. I stripped off, ran in, skinny- dipped, left my clothes on the beach, a wave came in, took my clothes, so I was running round naked looking for them. Shara was walking on the beach, thought it was amusing and helped me."

On the interrogation training he went through to join the SAS:

"We had American Special Forces with us and one had a heart attack from the stress. At the end of it, I was naked, wrapped in a blanket, snot and blood everywhere. You see a psychiatrist at the end and he asks if you felt fear, and the only time I'd felt fear like it was once when my parents left me somewhere. They are not trying to break you, but they are trying to find what you're really made of. It is like grapes: they are squeezing you to see what is inside."

On his attention from the public:

"People come up and talk about the Scouts. Or they say, 'You are a total nutter,' or if I am in a bar they might say, 'Pint of urine, mate?'"

"I am quite cool with it, though if I am out with the boys, you know this vibe, you kind of prefer to be left alone. They are under enough pressure at school, you know? 'Your dad is tough. Are you tough?' Whack."

On his influence:

"Traditionally, change had to come through politics. To change the world you had to lead it. But I think the media can change the world for good, too. I can go into any tough council estate anywhere, UK, America, China, no protection, and I can high-five these kids because they dig our stuff. Cameron can't do that. Obama can't. It is possible to have a positive influence without becoming prime minister. You can talk about values, friends and family and how to keep them close. Get out and explore the world, live life boldly: say that to kids and you see them come alive."

Needless to say I'll be getting Xavier's.

It's just me I'm sure, but I just do not get the David Gandy thing. He looks the same in every single shot. His expression, the styling, everything.

I did not either at first, I was complaining for years, like really: the same face, no range at all, handsome but not chameleon, manly but not able to be edgy, classic but not exciting, old for the modeling industry etc. I was always saying to everybody I know that he was not a top model for me: he was just that face and body for D&G but then I thought WAIT A MINUTE héhé: he can´t transform but he has a signatura. We instantly know who he is (yes due to some magic marketing and great agency support but also from the fashion industry as a whole). Many professionals and magazines editors, brands and photographers hire him and are very happy with his looks because even though he can´t do more than the `I´m a classic beauty type of man and I can´t transform but I get the job done and I am sexy anyways so I sell a lot anything I put my name and body to it´ well it´s still a good thing for him: he managed to distinguish himself in the seas of millions of young models looking the same. So NOW I do get it but yeah I´m STILL frustrated he can´t do more than the classic looks. His body does not allow him to be a chameleon. I don´t want to praise him though too much coz he is not one of my favorite models but as a male model myself and from what I see on the markets nowadays, David Gandy has his place in the modeling industry, that´s undeniable. He is a top model yeah, but not one of the best male supermodels of all time. He knows how to pick up opportunities and to diversify and play out his name yeah that´s for sure.

David Gandy reminds me of some of the best models of the 70s to the 90s.
Back when the chameleon qualities weren't cultivated with the guys as much as with the women modeling.
He walks the same line as Jeff Aquilon, or Joel West and Mark Vanderloo.
May seem like just one look, however, like Bertrando3 noted, his look makes a strong statement.
He's probably one of my favorites at the moment.

So many good shoots on this page. David's cover is handsome as ever. I agree that he doesn't have a wide range but he does have a signature look and is just incredibly beautiful.
LOVE Jamie's Details cover and editorial as well
And good to see Bear, I'd always thought he was handsome and he looks very good here.
